Texans random thought of the day

Breno Giacomini and left guard Xavier Su’a-Filo -- are free agents. The unit struggled last season, though it did show improvement when blocking for the MOBILE Watson.

The reason is right there. Quarterbacks who favor their legs (usually young and often with poor blocking), tend to slow down the rush. That doesn't mean the offensive line was any better, just that teams saw that Watson was moving around quite a bit - leaving the pocket, scrambling, designed runs, etc - and they felt it better to play contain and let the rookie try to beat them with his arm. When teams were more aggressive, Watson was able to escape pressure and nobody noticed how many whiffs happened from the offensive line.

It also didn't hurt that we went 6+ blockers for Watson, and a ton of both misdirection and max protect. 2 backs from shotgun chipping, 6 offensive linemen and a back who checked late, and other heavy sets certainly helped the line look better.

meh, I could resond to thif if I were sober...lol

2) Cunningham - Was my favorite defensive player in the entire draft , I think he was underwhelming as a rookie - Jury's out
I respectfully disagree about the underwhelming comment. Yes, he has mad a few mistakes but he rarely misses tackles and has amazing sideline-to-sideline speed. I have yet to see a RB turn the corner with him in pursuit. I would like to see him improve his play up the middle a bit as he can get a little muddled in traffic but his eyes will get better with more experience

Could be Obriens way of telling the godfather 'in your face'.

You signed him now explain your reasoning to Mr Mcnuggett.

If I'm going down I'm taking you with me succah.

Announcer: "Looks like Breno gave up his third sack of the game"

BOB stares at the press box with a smirk

FWIW, PFF graded Cunningham better than McKinney. That's pretty good for a rookie.
I was really pleased when we snagged him in the draft, even though we could have used that high pick on another position.
I think we will have one of the best ILB pairings in the league.

Like I said , Cunningham was my favorite defensive player in the draft. What excited me was he has the wheels to stay with RB's and the size to not be overwhelmed by TE's in the passing game ..... He showed good coverage skills in college - There were several times this season where he was just lost in that aspect losing backs in coverage , the NE game was probably the most notable instance but there were many others.
Side to side he was very good .... but the reason you drafted this cat is coverage ability. I don't doubt he makes improvement there but this season I expected better.

Yeah Dylan Cole became a fan favorite pretty quick .... two more years on his rookie contract , enjoy it while he's here.

Maybe our new GM will find a way to keep the players we find/develop.

It’s all entertainment at this point. Don’t get to emotionally invested as you can’t control any of the decisions the Texans make. Just sit back and relax.

Some players are going to be playing out of position as each year as well but all will be glad to be there.
Wonder if the combine worked out schedules so players won't be at medicals and have team meeting to get to. That happened to Foreman I think.

I wonder what happens if Vrabel gets a HC job during those practices? Do Texans let him stick around and coach prospects if he’s already there?

Now that there is some forward thinking.

Unless Obrien gets busy he will need all the coaches he still has on hand.

Fired his coaches, guess he wasn't too sure at the time he was going to win the battle.

More fodder for the anti Obrien crowd. :)

What's up everyone? So, how was the season? LOL. From what I heard, they didn't do worth a damn. I completely washed my hands of anything Texans, and anything NFL related this season. I'm not going to get into the reason why but if you think it is what it is, then yes that's what it is, if that makes any sense. To tell you the truth though, not watching football this season of really did not bother me one bit. I was not anxious to hear what was going on, I really didn't want to know to tell you the truth. It just seemed that every time I would turn on the TV, or turn on the radio to say "okay I'll just check it out for a couple of minutes, it was that political b*******. It just seems like it won't go away. The one thing that I did find cool was I heard that DeShaun Watson turned out to be pretty damn good. It's about time! It's about time that Houston finally got that guy in the draft that nobody thought would end up being as good as he is. You always see it happening to other cities, but it really never happens to Houston. I'm happy for them for that though. People kept on asking me, what do you think about the Texans? What do you think about this player or that player, and I would have to tell them I have no freaking idea. People we're amazed that I was not watching the Texans. :shockedMy one buddy said me not watching the Texans was like the pope not going to church on Sundays LOL. But anyways guys I just wanted to drop in and say hello to all my buddies on here and hope that all y'all are doing well. May God bless you all, and may everyday be the best day of your life people, y'all enjoy it, Goodbye. :ok::jam:  :worldpeace:

So the Texans are coaching the senior bowl with a depleted coaching staff? Seems unfair to the kids :(
But Devlin (OLine) & Weaver (Dline) are still on the staff, right ? To me that's very important because I want to watch those 1-on-1 drills in practice, televised on TV, between the linemen which are conducted and managed by the line coachs in the week prior to the game.

They gotta get a DB's coach before the Sr Bowl.

Hopefully it's not Midgett.

Time for annual Texans are talking to a guy so they are dating...I mean drafting them thread.

This tended to be the case under Ricky.

Alot of OL I like on that Roster.

Cappa
Noteboom
Parker
Harrison
Bozeman
Corbett

What do you want to bet a couple of these guys end up as Texans.

I also like TE Adkins
LSU RB Williams could be a late rd guy
Griffin is a guy who I think BOB/Gaine are going to fall in love with and could immediately help with ST's.

Could the Texans move to a base 4-3 defense?
By: Harry Latham-Coyle | January 18, 2018 1:50 pm ET

With Mike Vrabel possibly departing the team for a head coaching job, the Houston Texans may well be looking for a new defensive coordinator. Vrabel’s predecessor Romeo Crennel is rumored to be retaking the reigns after his promotion to assistant head coach last year, and his 2016 defense was an elite unit.

But if the team does choose to look outside the organization, could they look to move away from the 3-4 that has become so familiar since J.J. Watt’s arrival, and install a base 4-3 defense? The Texans already utilize a number of 4-3 looks, and regularly use nickel packages with four down linemen to maximize pass-rushing potential. As such, the existing personnel should be relatively comfortable in the scheme.

Houston has the players to excel in a 4-3 Over Front:

Linebackers
To run a successful 4-3 defense the linebackers have to be smart and athletic. The Jacksonville Jaguars’ front seven was perhaps the most dominant unit in football this season, and the consistently strong play of Paul Posluszny, Myles Jack and Telvin Smith were crucial in allowing the defensive linemen to thrive in front of them.

In previous seasons this is where the Houston would have struggled, but the emergence of rookies Dylan Cole and Zach Cunningham leaves the team with three promising and capable linebackers. Benardrick McKinney continued his growth into a leader in the middle of the defense, and an extended and improved deal likely awaits. Cole, Cunningham and McKinney are three players the team should look to have on the field as often as possible, and thus being able to deploy the trio together is an attractive prospect.

In terms of alignment, McKinney is a natural fit as the middle (MIKE) linebacker. Strong, tall, physical and smart, he keys well on runs plays and is an effective tackler. His deficiencies in man-to-man pass coverage are well-known, but he is able to drop into his zone relatively well, and a move to a 4-3 would perhaps suit his game.

Cunningham would likely be utilised as a weak-side (WILL) linebacker. Lanky and athletic, he improved as a coverman throughout his rookie year and has the raw skills needed to thrive in this facet in the future. The Vanderbilt product would fit well in an attacking 4-3, pursuing running backs across the field and being a key coverage cog.

Cole would therefore be stationed on the strong-side, as a SAM linebacker. The undrafted gem is athletic and carries a strong, muscular frame extremely well. He is a stout run defender with excellent understanding of gap integrity. Cole’s reliability in man coverage was a pleasant surprise as a rookie, and he would be an excellent fit in this role, covering tight ends and running backs out of the backfield.
