Replacement GM thread

The Cowboys have done a pretty good job of talent evaluation over the past few years it seems. My only question is how integral was McClay in that process?
Is he a significant player in talent evaluation for the boys, or is it mostly Jerrah and Stephen Jones?
Cowboys take chances on character players, the Texans very rarely do. There are 2 chiefs who should be Texans and that's Houston and Peters. Both were top of the food chain, both had character issues, both were passed on by the Texans. Hell, Tyreke Hill wasn't invited to the combine, but everyone knew his talent. In the event of a talented player with character issues, 3rd rd are the steals

Why didn't you just say that the Chiefs take chances and Texans don't, what do the Cowboys have to do with Peters & Houston ?

If he’s [Billy Raye] already here and we have player personnel issues then what’s the point?

Gaine was here for 3 seasons before Raye III arrived. Which is the best thing of your question.

Ok so what you’re saying is he hasn’t had chance to make impact with personnel (came in 2017) and it’s Gaines doing from the prior years?

That is how I feel about the situation, yes.

My greatest fear is that this GM search turns out to be a sham..............with McNair wanting to place a GM that will play nice with Smith when he returns (no reason to giving a second thought that he isn't returning). McNair has placed a "1-2 week" time frame to pick a GM. If you can't wait until the Eagles and and Patriots are through with the POs, it is not a legitimate search. Why hire a company to search for a new GM if all you can come up with Gaines and Billy Ray? As a friend of mine said, no one's breaking down either of their doors for interviews.

my sources tell me that no one wants to take on a gm job thats not really a gm job. this is why no one wants to take the job. its only speculation but specifically the gm would only be here long enough for bill o brien to fail. the plan is to let bill have a one year prove it year. when he doesnt win the superbowl, then rick smith comes back and takes over the team and fans will be none the wiser.

So is it speculation, sources, sources speculating? Are they sources for potential GMs currently with other teams? - i.e. your sources know the thought processes of people in Dallas, Green Bay & New England? Or we're just back to speculation.

Who said RS is a numbers guy? Or for that matter Wolf?

I really wanted Davante Adams - 4.56 s 40 yd, Green Bay took him in the 2nd. RS took Hopkins - 4.57 s 40 yd. Those aren't fast times. Clowney had a 4.53 s.

Yes RS also took Fuller AFTER OB (and steelbtexan) declared we needed more speed.

The Houston Chroniclereported last week that McClay was one of six candidates to replace Texans general manager Rick Smith, who has taken a leave of absence to care for his wife as she undergoes treatment for breast cancer. On Sunday, theChroniclereported that McClay informed the Texans that he would be staying with the Cowboys.

McClay responded later in the day with this statement:

"I haven't officially accepted or declined interview with Houston because I haven't talked to anyone from there. My intentions to interview or stay in Dallas won't be divulged until I speak with someone officially from Houston if they are interested out of respect for both organizations and the process.''

im willing to have a rooster measuring contest if your want. you can either believe what you want to believe or you can beleive the truth. its only speculation but i firmly believe in my sources and they have informed me that rick smith is only on hiatus to let obrien fail. did you see how they paraded smiths;s wife out there. where was she for the previous years. heck who even knew rick was married? its a no win situation and no one wants to be the lame duck gm.

I think he means more of a cap guy then a proven talent evaluator.

OBrien will be the defacto gm.

That's what he meant by "alignment."

And if he fails, which he will because they've largely gotten who he wants the past 4 years (and we have too many holes to fix in one year) Rick comes back.

It's not a good situation.

Tin foil has officially become endangered in Houston. RS did everything possible to get OB fired this last year (cuz making bad GM decisions, over the objection of the HC, reflects badly primarily on the HC, especially for an actively involved, some might say meddling, owner) and now is faking his supposed wife's cancer to get OB fired by his absence.

Largely agree except I expect them to bounce a few games. Maybe back to that indeterminate 9-7, in the wild card up to the last week or two.

Let's face it. Subtract Watson and we were 32nd offense and 32nd defense this year. We've got nowhere to go but up.

Scarily, we still would beat the 2005 Texans 10 times out of 10. 2013 Texans would have won 7-8 of 10.

So you don't think Obrien will get an extension?

Yeah sounds about right.

But I am not expecting these guys (mainly Watt, Clowney, and Watson) to remain healthy and the division appears to be getting stronger.

We also will have normal aging. We could see big declines from Joseph and Miller if we haven't already.

Denver fired Josh McDaniels after two years.

He had a very similar scorched Earth policy to OBrien in terms of dealing with players and front office folks from previous regimes (getting rid of them).

Unfortunately we are going into year 5 of this with OBrien.

Why didn't you just say that the Chiefs take chances and Texans don't, what do the Cowboys have to do with Peters & Houston ?

That's my point. I'm pretty sure the directive about character guys comes from McNair. McClay may be a good talent eval guy, but when you get in the 3rd rd, there are talented, flawed guys the Texans won't touch. Then the fan base looks up and wonder why we didn't draft player X. I used Houston and Peters as examples. Texans took Brooks Reed when it was clear Houston was the more talented player and they took Johnson when Peters was the best db in the draft.

OK Which is it? Speculation or the truth?

My rooster is confused.

Too late about the hen house. Rooster started humping the boss's poodle. Damn poodle likes it.

Only hope for the poodle is that we get a GM real quick.

And Fuller has added a dimension to the offense with Watson that the Texans offense has never had, (A true homrun threat opposite Hopkins) If Fuller can stay healthy and matchup up with a healthy Watson, then Fuller can catch 8-10 TD's a season. Doubtful Fuller can stay healthy though.

Wolfe is a numbers person like Smith, not a player evaluator/scout-type personnel guy.

CNNND, I generally don't disagree with many of your post but this one I will dispute. I've wanted Eliot Wolf from the get-go and now it appears he could be had with no drama involved. The Texans need only invite him in for an interview. I think the Colts and Giants would like to bring him in for an interview and the Browns would like to add him to their current Ex-Packers Staff (Dorsey- GM and Highsmith- VP of Football Operations).

Here's a look at Eliot Wolf:

1. He was a un-official Intern and participated in Pre-Draft Preparations from the age of 11. 5x- Packers, 3x- Falcons (Filed his 1st official Scouting Report for the Falcons at age 14) and 1x- Seahawks.

2. Packers Pro Personnel Assistant 2004-08. (Finished Degree at U Miami in 3.5 yrs to take first NFL job)

3. Packers Assistant Director of Pro Personnel 2008-2011.

4. Packers Assistant Director of Player Personnel 2011-2012.

5. Packers Director of Pro Personnel 2012-2015.

6. Packers Director of Player Personnel 2015-2016.

7. Packers Director of Football Operations 2016-2018 (More than likely)

I think Gutekunst made the right move in giving Wolf's job to his choice, Russ Ball and allowing Wolf to interview elsewhere. As the new GM, it could be awkward and troublesome when the guy who was your boss suddenly becomes your subordinate.

As for the notion that Wolf is a "Numbers Man" versus a "Talent Evaluator", the guys been doing NFL talent evaluations since he was 11 years old or for roughly 25 years. His dad, HOF GM, Ron Wolf, allowed him to be around this environment for the majority of his life...much in the same vein as the Manning boys watching and learning how to be an NFL QB from their dad Archie. I like his chances in becoming a solid NFL GM, the apple probably didn't fall far from the tree. It would be wise for the Texans to bring him in for an interview.

I misspoke some, should have said Wolf is coming from a numbers position much like Rick did. Just to further make the comparison CnD was making.

I am not against Eliot Wolf in any way, on another site I mentioned him as 1 of my top 2 candidates when the news broke we were looking for a new gm.

Time to bring in Wolf for an interview.

He's available: Browns GM John Dorsey will interview Packers exec Eliot Wolf Tuesday

But looks like the Texans are not even interested at this point.

Things we know as fact: Rick Smith will eventually be back with the Texans. There are a lot of folks working at Kirby that he hired, even a year from now. He's the godfather of the owner's grandkids and the BFF to the owner's son, Little Enis. He's not disappearing. He's like executive herpes for Houston Texans, Inc.

Beyond that, it's speculation, even with your sources. But, your take is certainly plausible, and with what we know from the past 16+ years from this owner, I would not be surprised at all if Rick Smith is part of the boardroom making draft decisions in 2019.

Perhaps the ONLY way to prevent such a scenario is Bill O'Brien turning 4-12 into 12-4 and making it to a conference championship game in 2018.

won't more warm fuzzies? Wolf is more of a numbers guy like Smith was

I'm not sure how you can make that statement. Almost his entire career with the Packers was as a personnel guy:

Then you've got Packers GM Brian Gutekunst, with this quote:

"I surely want him to be part of this," Gutekunst said Monday during his press conference. "I think the world of Eliot Wolf, not only as a scout, but he's very close to me as a friend. He obviously has other opportunities if he wants them. That's kind of between me and Eliot, but I'm very hopeful that he'll be here."

And from the Packers website:

His primary duties include coordinating the pro and college football departments as well as handling both college and pro player evaluation through film study, college visits, pro days, college all-star games and the NFL Scouting Combine.

Everything about the guy screams GM, especially since he was by his father's side learning the business from a young age.

Texans GM search: Brian Gaine the favorite
A couple of familiar faces could be picks for Smith successor
By John McClain, Houston Chronicle

January 8, 2018 Updated: January 8, 2018 10:01pm

The Texans can make a smooth transition from Rick Smith to his replacement as general manager by hiring Brian Gaine or Jimmy Raye III because of their familiarity with the organization.

The Texans kicked off the interview process Monday with Raye, their vice president of football operations/assistant general manager.

Gaine, Buffalo's vice president of player personnel, interviews Tuesday.

Although the situation could change, most consider Gaine the favorite because he spent three seasons (2014-16) with the Texans and was highly respected by members of the personnel, coaching and administrative departments.

This is a busy time for the Texans, as it is for most NFL teams. Not only are they looking for a new general manager, but coach Bill O'Brien must replace six assistant coaches.
That number could grow if defensive coordinator Mike Vrabel gets a head coaching job. He's a candidate for Detroit and Indianapolis.

If Vrabel is hired by the Lions or Colts, assistant head coach Romeo Crennel could return to defensive coordinator, a position he had from 2014-16.

O'Brien, whose staff will coach in the Senior Bowl, doesn't appear to be in a rush to hire new assistants. Because he has only one year left on his contract, it'll be easier to get coaches to come to the Texans if he signs an extension.

Once owner Bob McNair and vice chairman Cal McNair decide on a new general manager, they'll direct their attention to O'Brien and signing him to an extension.

A return to Houston?

The Rest of the Story

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

Only 2 choices so far.........and Gaine is the favorite..........making Billy Raye the second favorite? The grocery buyer better not be satisfied to call it a day any time soon.
