Replacement GM thread

Texans GM interviews get underway with some snags
By John McClain, Houston Chronicle

Updated 1:33 pm, Sunday, January 7, 2018

Gutekunst, who's been with the Packers for 19 years, had dinner with coach Bill O'Brien on Saturday night before Green Bay offered him full control over personnel.

Meanwhile, the Texans will have to wait before three candidates are available because their teams have denied them permission.

This week, Buffalo vice president of player personnel Brian Gaine and Texans vice president of football operations/assistant general manager Jimmy Raye III are interviewing.

Philadelphia denied the Texans permission to interview vice president of player personnel Joe Douglas. New England denied permission to interview director of player personnel Nick Caserio and director of college scouting Monti Ossenfort.

Under league rules, teams can deny permission as long as they are playing. The Eagles and Patriots won their divisions and host games in the divisional round next weekend.

Some interest league wide about McClay from Dallas.

How does Jerruh block him if McClay chooses to interview for another job?

Will McClay, the Cowboys' VP of player personnel, informed the Texans he's staying with Jerry Jones. He was on their list of possible GM candidates to replace Rick Smith.

Wow. If guessing wrong on a player makes one a whackjob then there are lots of them on this site.

Biggest of them all :coffee: for supporting Travis Johnson.

:coffee:

I didn't say they were exclusive of each other. He is a whackjob for his ridiculous opinions on multiple subjects, but it's fact he disappeared the moment Watson played and looked the part.

Cowboys Vice President of Personnel Will McClay has permission to speak with the Houston Texans regarding their general manager job but he has not heard from the club yet. "I haven't officially accepted or declined interview with Houston because I haven't talked to anyone from there," McClay told ESPN. "My intentions to interview or stay in Dallas won't be divulged until I speak with someone officially from Houston if they are interested out of respect for both organizations and the process."

There are other options and will continue to be after this off-season. A top tier candidate probably doesn't care about 32 teams. He cares about the best chance to succeed. I don't think We're it.
The Texans should be a very attractive job.

Does this open up the possibility of Eliot Wolfe?

So basically a retread and a mini me are interviewing this week...so ******* underwhelming....I would prefer a new face/new blood to take over at GM...

There are 32 GM jobs and 90% of the time there is an opening it's because the team sucks. You take your shot when you get it.

1 out of 6 candidates is out so Gaine is in? Ummm, ok.

If he actually knows this to be a fact for some reason then it means they never intended to hire anyone but Gaine and were just waiting for one of their unlikely also-rans to get a job so they could "snatch up Gaine before anyone else does". They'll tell us how lucky we are to have him back and how he was the guy they always hoped they could get which worked out nicely.

I swear I'm so jaded with the Texans right now that I'm not really prepared to greet any move they make these days with optimism. I just look at whatever they do and try to find the angle by which they are screwing up. How much longer until the Astros get back on the radar?

If this is all they were going to do then McNair should have just invested in cloning and made himself a set of Slick-Rick's to cover the foreseeable future.

Cowboys Will McClay Waiting to Hear from the Texans
Dallas Cowboys vice president of player personnel Will McClay waiting to hear from the Houston Texans.

*Updated from earlier report* -pds

The Houston Texans general manager search continues and Dallas Cowboys vice president of player personnel Will McClay is waiting to hear from the Texans. With McClay being in limbo and waiting to hear from the Texans that leaves two potential hires returning to their respective teams (Read Here) and three others being denied permission to talk with the Texans (Read Here and Here).

Despite reports of McClay opting to stay in the Dallas, McClay says that is not the case.

"I haven't officially accepted or declined (an) interview with Houston because I haven't talked to anyone from there," McClay told ESPN's Todd Archer. "My intentions to interview or stay in Dallas won't be divulged until I speak with someone officially from Houston if they are interested out of respect for both organizations and the process."

Currently, this leaves Buffalo Bills vice president of player personnel Brian Gaine and Texans assistant general manager as the only two options that will interview for the position. Gaine is due to arrive in Houston this coming week to interview for the position.

As for McClay, he has been instrumental in the talent infusion for the Cowboys over the years and has been called the “Not-so-Secret Weapon” of owner Jerry Jones. McClay has spent 14+ seasons with the Cowboys organization but he attended Rice University and grew up in Houston.

McClay has been the linchpin for the Cowboys throughout the past four seasons and recently turned down an interview in early 2016 for the Detroit Lions general manager position.

Over the past couple of seasons, McClay has been vocal on wanting to stay with the Cowboys due to the stability at the top of the organization. McClay is clearly one of the Cowboys top personnel people inside the building.

Are the Dallas Cowboys in jeopardy of losing their top talent evaluator?

Will McClay, the Cowboys’ senior director of college and pro personnel, is widely respected as one of the top talent gurus in the league and his name has emerged in the Houston Texans’ general manager search.

The Cowboys have granted permission to the Texans to interview McClay, but there has been no further communication between the Texans and McClay.

McClay said he has not been officially contacted by the Texans to set up an interview. It’s unknown whether McClay would entertain an interview opportunity because it hasn’t come to fruition yet.

So, Texans, let's just sit around on our hands and wait until no one's left except Gaines and Billy Raye........:toropalm:

steelb is the one of the most optimistic on this msg board right now. Even with BOB still employed he is a happy cloud compared to most.

The fact that the Texans are coaching the Senior Bowl seems like a major wrench for Caserio getting their GM job. They will want to have a GM in place. If Pats make Super Bowl, Caserio won't even be allowed to interview by the time Senior Bowl week comes around

I doubt Bill B. Will let him have an opportunity with any AFC team that might be a competitor of the Pats and Jerrah will do the same for any team in Texas. These guys will do all they can to ham string us and try to keep us from gaining on them. They all know we are a dangerous team in the making.

If McClain is reporting this, that means the organization fed this info to him IMO. They probably just forgot to ask McClay before they told McClain to report that he's staying in Dallas.

We should probably just get used to the fact that it's going to be Gaine.

They could hire Bugs Bunny for all I care. Until I see them go through their first free agency and draft, I won't know what to think of them anyway. However, 50 years of professional football in Houston has prepared me for the worst, which by simple averaging is what's most likely to happen.

This.I'm convinced more than ever that "leaks" always begin in the FO.

This is pretty much where I stand. I'm convinced Gaine is their guy but I don't necessarily have a problem with it.

You have it ass backwards. Smith wanted to keep James, O'Brien wanted the bigger corner.

Nope. You got it backwards

Really doesn't matter. They were having a discussion with no authority or rank being thrown around. Both were indifferent about a tail end of the roster decision. If either had a strong opinion they'd have gotten their way.

Just for accuracy sake:

From my recollection and with the transcript in the link I posted from the two roster discussions caught on camera OB came across as at least having an equal amount of input.

He even sounded like he was leading the convo on who to keep in both instances. Went so far as to tell Smith that a guy he (Smith) liked was going to have to show something in order to make the team.

And in the Charles James discussion they both said things about both players, however in the end it was OB that said let’s stick with the plan and go with the length....and Rick agreed...they seemed to be in lock step there actually....

I think cak has it right.

Back end of the roster...no strong conviction either way...

If there was disagreement and friction (and certainly seems like it) it wasn’t caught on camera and it was over some bigger more impactful moves that have been made.

Hard to figure this out. Supposedly lots of chatter out there about how valued McClay is.
I haven't seen any support out there about how valued Gaine or Raye is. I suppose Buffalo liked Gaine.
Looks to me like the team is waiting on Caserio or Douglas. Texans haven't mentioned McClay as far as I know.
I don't know jack about RayeIII but a poster on another site I frequent said he knows Raye and wasn't too impressed with his hire at the time.
Hard for me to understand how a team interviewing someones office personnel interferes with that teams performance in the playoffs.
Not as though someone is poaching their coaches. We are talking about second tier employees, assistants in most cases.

But...as some here fear...I am sure this organization will screw it up one way or another.

:coffee:

The Cowboys have done a pretty good job of talent evaluation over the past few years it seems. My only question is how integral was McClay in that process?
Is he a significant player in talent evaluation for the boys, or is it mostly Jerrah and Stephen Jones?

With Jerruh's ego, if McClay was the "brains" behind the personnel evaluation/picks, you would never hear about it.

McClay is the most significant scouting presence with the Cowboys. He does a ton of old school watching film that Jerry certainly does not do and Stephen probably does not do. Because of he nature of that organization, he does not get much credit, but he also does not get blamed for mistakes since he does NOT have final say on roster decisions. Honestly, if you are without a big ego, it really a great gig.

I wonder how many GM prospects are balking at interviewing because of concerns about Rick Smiths potential return for his old job ?
The value of Bob McNairs assurances such a scenario couldn't happen are undermined by the owners age and health.

Even if Smith returns in another capacity (and there is no position in the organization that could be found/left for his returnthat would not in some way be above the GM leve)l, my concern is that he would be in a position to and work to undermine/promote the failure of the new GM in hopes of showing up and regaining his old position. JMHO.
