Amobi Okoye conquers debilitating illness, coma, seeks return to NFL

Brisco_County

Apples and roadmaps
That's right, they had to put him in a medically induced coma(!) for three months. In a 90 year lifespan, that's 1/360th of your life gone in a blink.

Scary stuff. He had lost his speech and relearned to walk.

In 2013, just six years after being selected 10th overall in the NFL draft by Houston as a 19-year-old, Okoye was in the hospital with an autoimmune disease called anti-NMDA receptor ecephalitis. The condition struck him during workouts, causing convulsions and eventually putting him into a medically induced coma for three months.

He temporarily lost his ability to speak and had to relearn other basic functions such as walking.

I doubt he'll be able to return to the NFL as a starter, but he should try. He'd do himself no favors by not trying.

Rooting for the guy.

I hope I never have to watch oKoye steal another dime of an NFL teams $$$$. Obviously being the best player he could be wasn't going to happen. He was just in it for the $$$$.

You've basically expressed far more tolerance and understanding regarding Johnny Manziel (other than you have said you were glad he didn't play for the Texans). Exactly what is it that makes Amobi a villain in your eyes, and makes Johnny a sympathetic (for lack of a better way to put it) figure?

I'm all for the Texans offering "The Nigerian Shopping Kart" a contract to see if he's up for backing up whoever we end up starting opposite Watt and the guy we have backing that guy up as well.

I think a trip to camp would be fun to watch. Okoye entered the league at what? 7? 8? He can't be more than 18 years old now. We should try and re-sign him and see if he can stay long enough to legally buy a beer.

He's not a villan, he was just stealing $$$$, not taking his job seriously and now he wantsanother drink at the trough. I'm able to separate out oKoye suffering a major health issue and that he was a good player who certainly didn't put his job 1st.

This is a totally different issue from JM. JM has an addiction issue. okKoye has a work ethic issue. IMHO

If you read accounts going back to college and continuing through his short NFL career, Manziel relied on his talents, but never applied himself in school or the playbook or the film room. This was all covered up in college because he could win on limited laurels...........tried the same in the NFL in Cleveland and it didn't work since now he was a small fish in a big pond.

Blame the Texans, not the player, for that failed reach of a pick.

As for Okoye, I wish him well. I would be shocked if he could even make a practice squad at this point, but I cannot fault him for trying. Keepin' the dream alive.

I do blame Smithiak for the pick. I also think oKoye is just in it for the $$$$. I'm OK with him getting a tryout although it wouldn't be on my team if I was an owner. I dont like guys that aren't really into football on my team.

I dont fault him for trying to keep his dream alive. His dream of more $$$$. I'm different in that I dont hate the guy but can separate the person, (Good from all accounts) from the player. (Bad by my own vision) oKoye is just not tough/dedicated enough to play in the NFL.

I think all of them are in it for the money. Some just happen to have a passion for the game, as well.

J.J. Watt is going to get out before he fades away. He'll have his money. But, you could make a case that he does not have the passion of someone like Bruce Smith or Reggie White, who played until the game no longer wanted them.

I don't question anyone's degree of passion, and I have no problem with the money desire. At the end of the day, they are ALL just entertainers. And reality is they entertain us as their jobs, so why not get paid to do it?

I just want to know what's up with the random capitalization in Okoye's name. I mean, I've seen Ok0ye (zero in the middle, hence the spelling), but what's with the capital K?

Refresh my recollection please, what happened or was reported that he wasn't giving full effort?

I was pleased that Jerry signed Okoye and wished that his health would have allowed him to continue his career. IMO, it was a bold move as well as a compassionate one, and in my heart of hearts I don't believe the Cowboys organization regrets the decision.

You're certainly entitled to that opinion.

Believe me when I tell you I'm glad he was able to overcome that disease. That doesn't mean as a football fan I ever want to see him on the field again. I would rather his spot go to a no name who football comes 1st.

What a crazy article. Dude is definitively a gamer. I wish him the best.

Weird part is that he hasn't played in 5 years but is only 30! I keep forgetting the Texans drafted him when he was only 19.

I thought it was cool that he binged on Madden to learn the ins and outs of football. I have met many fans that have said the same thing about Madden.
