All encompassing Rick Smith thread

So now what? Who are the best GM prospects out there? Will Rick return at some point in another position? Big changes ahead for this team!

Some guys I would interview for GM

Scott Pioli - I love the team he built in Kansas City (one of the most pro bowlers drafted in the NFl during his tenure in KC) and he obviously made impressive moves to help the early Patriots win 3 super bowls. If we kept OB, Pioli would make some sense here because they were on the Patriots at the same time. The things I hate about Pioli are obviously his weird work environment that created a ton of turmoil in KC and his terrible choices as coaches while GM for KC. There is no denying his ability to locate talented players, but can he manage the coaching staff?

Joe Douglas - Currently with Philly, but this guy was a vital part of the Ravens success in the 2000s. He was the scout who oversaw the region that produced Flacco and Rice, then was promoted to the National Scout for Baltimore where he helped them create a very talented team and organized and coordinated the undrafted free-agent signings, which has been very good for Baltimore. It's hard to say how the Bears 2016 and the Eagles 207 drafts will turn out, but he is highly regarded as a talent evaluator. He is a little green on the leading a team aspect, but his ability to find talent has been highly admired.

George Paton - Assistant GM in Minnesota. The guy started out in the 90s with Chicago and helped paved the way for successful drafts as the draft and pro scouting director. He had a stint in Miami then went to Minnesota where he has helped build a very good football team. He has followed Spielman around and I don't love guys who follow others around because it is very hard to decipher how much is their success. He seems to be a talented player evaluator, but can he lead a team and pick good coaches?

How the hell do you extend a coach after going 4-12 and look to a new GM he is close to? If he tanks next year you are likely going to need to dump him so why arrange the FO to be allied with him?

They'll probably just give the responsibilities to assistant GM Jimmy Raye III and name him interim GM or something like that. I don't see big changes coming out of this organization, now.

First and foremost, just like #dqstrong, this goes well beyond football. My thoughts and prayers are with Mrs. Smith and the Smith family.

On the football side, I'm not sure what this means yet. The "extended leave" has not been defined. It could very well be open ended with no defined date of return....but at some point Mrs. Smith's situation will resolve itself (praying for full recovery) and when that happens, what happens to Rick?

I think the Texans have an asst. GM. While the cancer diagnosis is horrible, it does give McNair a very easy way out. He can elevate the Asst GM on an interim basis and essentially kick the can down the road.

He can say (and perhaps rightfully so) that a change like this shouldn't be made under these circumstances and Rick's job is secure upon his return or something like that and meanwhile our Asst GM will be taking over duties in what amounts to an extended trial for the job on a perm basis.

Rick's wife not withstanding, I'd much rather see a bold move and a totally new direction.

History tells me that McNair acts more like the Senate then the House - slow and extremely deliberate. His ownership style is sort of like a sloth playing pictionary.

I think more likely, Smith as GM is over. If/when he returns, it will be in a non-football related role within the organization.

Innes is a prick

Using your wives breast cancer as a shield for being demoted is disgusting.

I don't get how hard this is to grasp. The guy was getting demoted anyhow. The Texans and Rick are using his wife as a prop. I find it to be abhorrent. Just say "we are moving on from Rick". Allowing his sick wife to be used is gross.

O'Brien is staying. Rick Smith will be replaced.

#Texans expected to go outside the organization to replace Rick Smith as GM. One candidate expected to get a strong look is Brian Gaine, Bills VP/player personnel. He joined Buffalo after being director of player personnel with the Texans.
Unless the new Texans GM post is assured long-term "permanent", what GM worth anything is going to come here for 1 year until Smith returns? If Smith is not out permanently, it isn't going to happen.

It belongs in that and every other thread on this board if true,

If they are looking for a 1 year hire which they will not find..............and they say they tried...........then you might expect for Jimmy Raye III to take over........more of the same, but with 5 instead of 4 being in the decisions mix............Bob McNair, Cal McNair, Jimmy Raye III, Rick Smith (still assuredly in the background) and Bill O'Brien...........even worse than before.

Rick Smith is being replaced. Just not officially fired yet. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife. Very bad timing but the new GM is going to receive a long-term contract. Who says anything about one year?

"Extended leave of absence" is well-defined as anywhere from 12 weeks to 6 months.

Not surprised by Innes' take. Trolling from one of the most despicable human beings in Houston sports radio history.

So I'm assuming Smith takes a leave of absence, we hire a new GM, then he comes back in a different role? The timing of all of this is strange to say the least...

Josh Innes can come across as very insensitive sometimes, but I'd like to think he's just wording things on Twitter improperly. I don't believe he's a mean-spirited person or meant to cause any malice. If he had just kept to that one simple thought, "The Texans are moving on from Rick Smith" that would have been just fine.

Give OB Belichick control over the roster and a 2 yr extension, see what happens. That's the best case scenario for the Texans, moving forward. If OB wants or needs a GM after that, he names him and Smith goes onto other stuff.
That gives OB the chance to strut his stuff, continuity with the coaching staff and McNair to save face.

Everyone is actually saying they are moving on from Rick the GM. Not defending Innes, but basically he said the same thing in a very ugly way

Why does Smith need to be "replaced" if he is just taking a "leave of absence"? I don't think we are getting the full story.

#Texans coach Bill O’Brien will meet with owner Bob McNair tomorrow to discuss the direction of the personnel department and the process of hiring a GM. A lot to be hammered out, including the list of potential replacements for GM Rick Smith.

It’s absolutely amazing that they are giving a 4-12 coach input on who the next GM will be. Hire the best candidates on your own and let them evaluate BOB after next season.

Josh innes is a snot rag. He's the dander in your ass toilet paper won't wipe away. He's the prototype shock jock saying repulsive things purely to get a response. How anyone can listen to 790 in the morning is beyond me. Screw that guy. Send his ass back to st Luis or wherever the hell he was spawned.

When our franchise players like Deshaun Watson and J.J. Watt both speak out and say they support Bill O'Brien and want him back in 2018 it carries a lot of weight. To be fair, we're probably a 10-6 playoff team in 2017 if not for all of the key injuries. Possibly 12-4 or 11-5 if O'Brien didn't make one bad play call when we had the lead late in the game against the Patriots and Seahawks on the road. If we merely stay healthy in 2018 I think we're going to have a quick turn around record wise.

You don’t let players or fans make your decisions re:personnel. Remember, countless players wanted Kubiak to stay in place as well.

That was my exact same question.

Just to make it official:

http://www.houstontexans.com/news/a...-absence/4e87969c-1ce1-4eb9-ac49-f3becc404119

“Effective immediately, I have chosen to take an extended leave of absence to focus my attention and intention on my wife's complete recovery from her recent diagnosis of breast cancer. We are faithful and trust in God's promise of healing and Wholeness. I am eternally grateful to the McNair family for their unwavering support during this trying time. This was an extremely difficult decision for me to make as I love this organization and every member of this team both on and off the field. I remain committed to our quest to bring a championship to the city of Houston, yet my family needs me now and they are my priority.”

Looks like everyone's dream has finally came true. Especially Steel the biggest Rick Smith hater on here.

Now let's pray that his wife beat that ugly monster Cancer.

Steel's hope is well based. You don't have to look past our 2nd-4th round draft history to understand it. Give rick some new b.s. title while handing his job off to fresh talent. Best for all. Prayers for his wife.

Of course we aren't getting the full story. Not one of these supposed insiders spewing things knew jack about Smith's wife even though his traveling to Arizona would have been obvious. And yet people around here are still glomming onto whichever doofus insider best fits their narrative.

There's one thing we know - we have no idea what McNair would have done.

I guess this fits the agenda. The mcnair's don't have the balls to tell a god father He's fired. He's on absence for family reasons. It suits the mcnair's, rick, and the fan base.
