This is a more rational and logical argument than going down rabbit holes and making assumptions based on forum and media speculation. The NFL is full of GMs and HCs who do not get along. The GM or HC who makes winning secondary to seeking power, petty arguments or ego trips will be unemployed soon enough.
There are no rabbit holes or assumptions when you read direct quotes from the men who own and run this franchise.
And you're quoting a guy that assumed O'Brien had nothing to do with Osweiler, in spite of direct quotes from the HC, that it's a more rational and logical argument.
Funny thing is you went down the rabbit hole with your own assumption about the NFL being full of GMs and HCs that do not get along. I do not believe it is as prevalent as you appear to imagine, but I readily admit that this is my own assumption as an NFL fan.
He's talking about my 2nd post regarding acquiring Brock. Is it not logical to you?
Your scenario is certainly plausible if you want to look down a rabbit hole. But, it is nothing more than speculation.
My perspective of logical is Occam's razor: the simplest explanation is usually correct.
I'm reading the words of the head coach, not the media, not fans, not speculation, but O'Brien himself shaking his pom poms for Osweiler.
What anyone wants to speculate beyond that is up to the individual. I claim no knowledge of how things went down on Kirby. I just know, based on the facts of quotes from the men involved, that it was a collective decision to sign him on the first day of FA. They are ALL responsible for that debacle (and bless their hearts, they tried).
btw, I'm not here to disrespect your take or argue. I enjoy the chatter among fans.
It is time to move on. We have bigger fish to fry now. The main one being ,"how will they attack the 2018 draft and free agency. What will they do with Joseph and Cushing? Will they finally reconstruct Watts contract. Will they let Newton go? Will Tom Savage get extended or (ouch) franchised? And finally will Bill O'Brien be the coach of the Houston Texans after the 2017 season is over with?

I'm all for releasing the three that you mentioned but I'm less than confidant that Smith will be able to find marginally better talent in FA at OL and we all know the horror stories about the teams that "win" FA. What do the 2018 OL prospects look like? Is it a deep draft, because the Texans aren't picking until the 3rd rd.The commentary was pretty much spot on, IMHO. I especially liked the if in the last year of his contract the players treat O'Brien like a substitute teacher he wouldn't have deserved a contract extension. It's also true that releasing Cushing and Newton would allow even more opportunity in an already favorable cap situation. Those two would add over 12 million to an already 50 million dollar cap space. Release Jeff Allen for 5 million more.
The fish rots at the head first was also true with this organization. The players have played hard this year but it's likely they will end the season with a losing record. Many have said there's plenty of talent on this team. If those two things are true that points to Front Office/coaching as the main culprits. To me it's not an either/or situation between the FO and coaching staff.

Then that leaves Solder as the only quality tackle in FA next year. The Texans might need to invest in vibranium pads and helmet for DW4.Much like last offseason , there isn't much OL talent available via free agency in 2018. That's why the best Tricky Rick could do was Breno Guacamole off the scrap heap at RT.
That lack of available talent makes one wonder why Tricky Rick didn't work something out with Brown instead of the team enduring that holdout and sending him off to Seattle.
In 2018 FA the Texans own Chris Clark is the 3rd "best" on their list of FA LT's and 7th highest rated of "All OL" , Breno Guacamole is #10 on that list .... That should tell you how slim the pickings are.
Greg Robinson (Det) and Nate Solder (NE) are probably the only two quality tackles available.
It's going to be difficult to fix this dumpster fire of an OL this offseason when they don't have early picks to invest and there's not much to be had in FA unless they are willing to shell out the big bucks foe one of the above two options - if they are options at all.

....unless, Bob McNair hired both of you.
With the FA market being so thin, OT wise...don't be surprised if BB doesn't re-sign Solder and decides to draft a new OT with their acquired RD2 SF pick. Everyone knows how that goes for BB and the Patriots....like a cat, no matter how high they go up, they always land on their feet. Solder will be signed but he'll be competing for his starting position during camp. If the rookie delivers, Solder would then become a tradeable commodity to help stock pick(s) for 2019...and folks, that's how BB keeps the Patriots at the top.

There are 2 FA OT's that I would like to see Ricky sign in FA next yr that would be upgrade and are young in NFL yrs.
1. Ty Nsekhe from Washington is a mountain of a man who looked pretty good playing LT when Trent Williams got hurt last yr.
2. La Adrian Waddle, who is currently looking really good playing RT for the Pats hile replacing a hurt Marcus Cannon.
Then draft a OT/OG and I guarantee you the OL will look much better. Bob/Ricky McNair just have to have the will/spend the $$$$ to do it. # Doubtful
The Texans would be giddy with average OTs .
Yep, then draft a LT of the future and train him up while starting him out at LG. That's the way I would go.
You can get guard help in the 3rd . Not that there's anything wrong with XSF except he can't block or react . I'd plea bargain for Will Hernandez and Braden Smith right now .

I wouldn't be surprised. However, resigning Solder isn't just up to the Pats. Nate's agent knows what we all know and what you just pointed out. He's going to get top dollar on the open market because he will be the best out of a poor group. Will the Pats pay top dollar for him? It's not usually how the Patriots operate. Maybe if they had an unexperienced young QB back there but they have the GOAT.
Another thing to think about in regards to Solder, the Patriots used the 85th pick in the 2017 draft to select OT Tony Garcia. I believe they're already prepared for football w/o Solder.
If they want to keep Solder, which I think they will, then Solder will get the franchise tag. They've done it before with Matt Light.
Agreed about Garcia.
Matt Light was drafted 2001, got a 6 yr extension Oct. 2004 them signed a 2 yr contract July 2011. He wasn't franchised.
And Light was 3 PB, 1 AP. Solder has never been to a PB.
I remember the Pats talking about franchising Light, they must have agreed to an extension. I imagine the same thing will happen with Solder.
If they wait until July it means he has hit the open market.
They didn't show a lot of love last time, signing him to just a 2 yr contract.
Get both of those guys and a guy like Desmond Harrison and sign the FA's I listed then you have a young deep OL.
Nsekhe/Hernandez/Martin/Smith/Waddle
Harrison/Mancz in reserve
That's an OL that you can win a SB with in a couple of yrs while keeping Watson healthy. It also gives you some leeway if one or 2 busts. It also should ensure that we never have to see this seasons pathetic OL play for 5 yrs.
It's a plan I could definitely live with. That means it will never happen. This is the yr to load up on OL talent in the draft though. It's a very deep OL class.
Traded the number 1 pick ( even though Clowney is a beast) for extra picks that year and the following. They could've got a QB in the 2015 draft.
But oh well we are back to square one. This time we don't even have a 1st and 2nd round pick next year.
If Andy Reid gets fired for the implosion going on with the Chiefs I would bring him in immediately.
What has Reid ever done? At least Bill has the excuse of losing a great QB and having many starters out. What's Reid's excuse for his implosion?
Oh I don’t know - taken a team to the Super Bowl maybe?
Been to 4 conference championship games.
Have turned around teams to become playoff teams if not contenders.
Also his record is .602 regular season and .478 in the playoffs.
Remind me again what OBs resume is? And how many QBs in the last few years? In how weak of a division? And we are supposed to hope things get better? Ok...
I guess this matters to you...![]()
Ok, I'll give you the Super Bowl but that was in 2004. That's kinda a long time ago to put it lightly and the NFL is incredibly "What have you done for me, lately?"
Again, what's his excuse for the implosion this year? Is it because Eric Berry is out for the season? The Chiefs fans are calling for his head judging by their forum.
O'Brien with Watson has been some of our best football, by far. A Rookie QB breaking records but our defense is awful and they lost us the NE/Seattle games. We have been injury-plagued this season and it is what it is. Our record is a result of that. I'm all aboard with firing Rick Smith because he can't draft past the 2nd round and it has caught up to us.
The grass isn't always greener. Assuming Watson stays healthy, we'll go back to being an offensive juggernaut and will give every team a run for their money.
Doesn't make sense - if you're going to blame him for the bad, then you have to give credit for the good. He was smart enough to give Watson the game he needed to play to win.I am in the camp that the recent success OB has shown it more attributed to Watson than OB. OB is just in the right place at the right time. Outside of coaches like McAdoo most NFL coaches would have shown the same success as OB had with Watson. He didn’t create an elaborate playbook for Watson. He just used more of the types of plays Watson succeeds at from college.
I think an offensive minded coach like Reid could do real special things for a special player like Watson. Look at how Reid turned around Smiths career.
The implosion? Was it the Steelers? Losing Berry? Everything bad happening at the same time? Bad D. Bad play by Smith (not this pass game. ) Losing to the Bulls, Giants and Jets is perplexing.
I am going to go with the defense because they just brought in Revis looking for some old veteran to make an impact on the field and in the locker room.
Reminds me of Kubiak and how he could run the offense but Wade had to come in and run the defense.
Bring in Reid. Pair him with Crennel/Vrabel.
Just differences in opinions.

I think it is insanity to get rid of a winning coach after one bad severely injury riddled season.
My $0.02c worth.

Agree to disagree.
I don’t think he has enough good with Watson to overcome the bad decision making of the past. Those few games with Watson was more of Watson record setting rookie performance than anything OB did.
Question - who do you think has been a better coach in the last 4 years. Reid or OB?
I think Reid. I hate using Michael Jordan comparisons - but switching from OB to Reid would be similar from switching from Doug Collins to Phil Jackson. It’s an upgrade overall.
OB has a reputation as a "QB whisperer" because he was lucky enough to work with the GOAT.. but in reality Reid has an infinitely better resume as a QB whisperer than OB.
because of McNabb and Smith?
If you can get Reid, sure.Agree to disagree.

Agree he hasn't been perfect, but how many coaches are?OK kudos to OB for benching Savage for Watson, but like the other thread title reminds us, we still had only a 3-4 record when Watson was hurt.
Sure, it was exciting to take 2 top contenders (Pats, Seahawks) down to the wire, but as good as Watson was, it was OB's scared play calling on crucial game-sealing 3rd downs in both games that lost those games for us.
I actually don't think that OB should be fired, but I think he has huge deficiencies as a HC (play-calling, game/clock managing)
If you can get Reid, sure.
But just jumping off the OB ship for a coach with a similar record makes no sense wouldn't you agree?
Watson likes OB, so why upset that apple cart?
I agree jumping off the OB ship for a coach with a similar record doesn’t make sense.
So, no. I don’t want us to go get Jeff Fisher.
Reid yes. Fisher no.

I'm a no on Reid as well. Just something about his track record shows he always faulters near or at the end.
