OptimisticTexan Mock 1.0

OptimisticTexan

2024 / Rebuilding Block 4 After Playoffs / Texans
I know I had another mock tucked in with another post but this time, I used multiple sources and a simulator to come up with this early draft scenario. The simulator gave the Texans COMP Picks in, RD3 (1) and RD6 (2). Again, there are several scenarios that determine in which rounds COMP Picks will be awarded to teams. I still think the play of Simon could elevate one of the RD6 picks to RD5 and the fact that Aboushi was elevated to starter in Seattle and Don Jones (49's - 2 YRS @ 2.2M w/ 1M Guaranteed / IR) was lost in FA, could help the Texans land a 4th and final COMP Pick in RD7.

In this Mock, I'm using the simulator's draft position, projected COMP Picks and will add a RD7 COMP in the event the Texans are given one. I'm going heavy on offense early since the Texans defense should bounce back when their stars are back on the field for 2018. I'm going to draft some defense for depth plus ST's, but offense would be my first priority since protecting and giving Watson the best chance at success is my ultimate goal.

RD3-08: OT / Jamarco Jones / Ohio St / 6-8 @ 310 lbs / He could go LT or OG but he's had 2 seasons at LT, I'd just keep him there and get him prepared to start.

RD3-20: OC / Frank Ragnow / Arkansas / 6-5 @ 317 lbs /
If he falls to this position, I'd seriously consider giving the guy a look at Center and entertain the though of which side Martin could handle as OG. Ragnow could also play OG but C could be his calling in the NFL.

RD3-C1: SS / Cole Reyes / North Dakota / 6-2 @ 215 lbs / He has the size, ability to cover and can hit...pretty much what a team looks for in a SS. I believe he suffered an injury this season, not debilitating or career threatening but an injury nonetheless. This may help the Texans if he were to fall and be available this late in RD3.

RD4-08: TE / Mike Gesicki / Penn St / 6-6 @ 252 lbs / Size...he has the right size for a TE but, he can block, runs smart routes and can catch. This could be a huge pick if he's still on the board.

RD6-08: OT / Bentley Spain / North Carolina / 6-6 @ 300 lbs / Another guy who has lined up as a starting LT. He could transition to RT and take a season to learn the position unless of course, he surprises the team with his work at LT. This team is in short supply of OT's and this is the only way to build depth.

RD6-C1: OG / Brendon Mahon / Penn St / 6-4 @ 315 lbs / A thick powerful crowd mover. I like the way he's been part of a good OL for Barkley and no doubt that his play will translate to the NFL. This is another pick that would be a big plus late in the draft.

**I'm making my list and checking it twice. OL is obviously a big priority to me.**

RD6-C2: WR / D.J. Chark / LSU / 6-2 @ 185 lbs / Whoops, he blew by me in the time it took to type this. Hell, this guy is so fast...he can hit the light switch ad be in bed before the room gets dark!!! He's a "top off the defense" specialist who possesses a set of hands. If he falls to this point in the draft it'll be b/c of his lack of targets and weight. But, pop the corks if he does b/c this guy could help make the receiving group lethal. I'd also be tempted to try him out at KR and/or PR to see if that speed could pay dividends. Dang-It...I'd start printing "Chark Attack" t-shirts right away. Put him back on KO's and when the ball is kicked, play the Jaws theme....hell, even if the majority of kick wouldn't be returnable, it would be cool from a marketing standpoint.

RD7-08: CB / Jaylon Dunlap / Illinois / 6-1 @ 190 lbs / Just a decent CB with some speed and skills that can be developed. He could be a good body for ST's until he's ready for playing time.

RD7-C1: LB / Jesse Aniebonam / Maryland / 6-3 @ 259 lbs / Another guy whose draft stock is probably going to take a hit due to injury. He's an OLB type who also played DE. I see him as a ST body until the defensive coaches can find out where he fits.

Definitely need to major on the oline plus you have highlighted some other nice talent to consider.
For me at this point, I am focusing on specialists at their position - we need guys we know can play the position rather than gambling that they can transition along the line.
Atm, we have two very good Centers in Mancz and Martin. I would look to trade one of these guys for a decent guard or RT and nail down that spot to ease the reliance on the draft. That and the fact that a bunch of rookies on the line is not a good scenario unless they are all competent and you cant bank on that with later round rooks.

Four O-linemen and a TE with 5 of their first 6 picks! Sounds good to me! :) And, it's not like they don't need 4 new O-linemen. Just don't think the Texans will do it. My guess is they will draft 2, maybe 3, and also pick up a FA OT/OG (probably an OG) if there are any good ones on the market. The number of O-linemen they draft will probably hinge on who they can get in FA, the development of Davenport/Fuller, and the number and quality of O-line prospects in this years draft. With players like Connor Williams, OT, Texas coming out early it will only add more depth to the class and give the Texans a better chance of getting somebody good.

Overall, I would be happy with this haul if that's the route the Texans go. I just can't comment on any of them at this time because I haven't looked into them yet but, it looks good on paper! :shades:

Jamarco Jones (OT) and DJ Chark (WR) are on the rise on some boards. I'd sure be a lot happier if these guys were to remain slotted where I originally saw them. I think Chark's speed will get him a nice bump up on draft boards after the Combine.

If Jones were to go before the Texans pick, I wouldn't hesitate at taking Ragnow first in RD3. I still like Gesicki (TE) with the RD4 pick since that will be a position of high demand. With no RD5 pick, Chark would be lost if he moves up the board. To get his speed and size that late would be a steal.

Enjoyed read..comments at random: Chalk doesn't look to me to be able to pick up much weight without sacrificing speed; still as a 6th I would risk it. I don't think we will draft TE rather go with Griffin (an experienced vet who if healthy will provide good target for Watson), Anderson who IMO will end up starting, contract year and with DW should immensely improve on 14 YPC. I do expect TE to be pursued in free agency and after draft ..UDFA.

Jarmarco Jones I expect to be gone but I cannot get excited about him after watching him. I am mocking Auburn's Braden Smith in third to be RG (some see him at LG) moving Allen to LG as he will be back. Allen could look better if healthy and at his old position on left side. *Note his $5m cap savings could be used if an OG can be found in free agency. I'm doubtful. I am waiting evals on Tyler Crosby after his team (Oregon) got smoked today by Boise St.
Good personal article Cbssports.com/nfl/draft/prospectrankings

I do like Ragnow but Martin and Manz have center locked which is good I guess 'cause neither have done much at OG. I'd be more interested in Ragnow at OG.

Will be more fun when we know the comp picks and hope we get a bump to 5th from one of the two sixths. We should have news on "returning to school" list soon. I am also mocking Oregon corner Arrion Springs who has had two great seasons in row (12 and 17 PBUs)> I seem to be the only one thinking he could go day 2.

Another guy I like is LT Trevon Tate Memphis who appears to be ranked very low. I have him in 4th expecting him to come out as a junior due to shortage of tackles + his QB Riley Ferguson and WR Anthony Miller are leaving. I would not mind if we got all three.

Opti keep the info and comments flowing.

Four O-linemen and a TE with 5 of their first 6 picks!

I'm in ! Toward the end of the season, on occasion, more frequently with each game, Davenport began exhibiting very promising play. He has much better feet than I anticipated. I feel like he very well may be starting next season. I was searching for a draftee that would make a good partner for him. It seems to me that offensive linemen are better in pairs .... like brothers .... and it's not just Munchak and Mathews that I base this on, ( although they are an excellent example). Just scanning player profiles, I kept coming up Notebloom. Both extremely high intelligence and character profiles. I started watching Notebloom .... that boy's got some feet .... strength too .... I didn't see him get beaten. Ben Braden is a brick at RG .... he is stronger than most oxen .... to the point that he may be able to lift most of them, I'm looking for a right tackle ... or left, if Davenport doesn't improve core and upper body strength sufficiently. Again, I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but I think Notebloom may very well be up to LT ! I like Crabtree an awful lot too .... he reminds me of Pocic last year. He seems to have that unbridled energy and enthusiasm .... like "boy this is fun .... who can I battle next ?" On a side note, I thought Martin was a good pick, but it seemed to me that Mancz is more at home .... more sand in his pants ? Tight end is still a question for me .... but we will see so much more in the upcoming bowls and .... COMBINE !!

I could get pretty excited if the teams RD3 and RD4 looked something like this:

RD3-04: RB - Sony Michel - Georgia. **What a RB!!! He has the size and speed to be effective in O'Brien's offense. I would like a backfield of Foreman, Michel and Blue**

RD3-18: RT - Dalton Risner - Kansas State. **Versatile OL who can play every position on the OL. RT should be a good fit.**

RD3-33: OC - Frank Ragnow - Arkansas. **This is a pick I really like. He can play either OC or OG. I'd be just fine with him competing to take the center job away from Martin which would allow Martin and Mancz to bookend him. I'd also be fine with Mancz starting at OC and having Martin and Ragnow doing the book ending. 2 veteran OC's playing beside the new OC would help in the adjustment period.

RD4-04 - TE - Mike Gesicki - Penn State. **Big TE who can block, runs solid routes, has decent speed and good hands. If he's there in RD4...gotta have him based on the current TE situation.

I like the comparison someone made of Michel to Kamara. Which is why I think Sony could land in the 1st round.

I like Michel too. Kamara is exactly who he reminds me of. He's built like a brick shedhouse and is quicker than a 14 year old, no wait .... a New York second ! We weren't as worldly 50 years ago !

Damn, DJ Chark may have played himself off my list.
