Final 5 Game Strategy....

OptimisticTexan

2024 / Rebuilding Block 4 After Playoffs / Texans
I woke up at 0400 this morning to catch the 2nd half of the game. To my amazement, the Texans were still in it and I hadn't even seen the offense yet. Then the offense came on the field and I wondered out loud, how in the hell did they even score a TD. This game had everything most of us fans have been harping on....including my analogy of how PFF grades OL performances. Fiedorowicz executes the perfect holding penalty that takes the team out of FG range. The strip sack was not Savage's fault, within a split second he was winding up to throw the ball and before he could get it going forward Suggs was on his back while Lamm was slapping him on his ass, yelling, good play! I really miss how Watson and Keenum led these receivers for TD's versus watching Schaub and Savage under throw certain TD's b/c they had to stop their advantages to catch the ball. Savage cost Hopkins a pretty sure TD.

As angry as I wanted to get, I quickly realized...this team has no business sniffing the playoffs, it would only hurt them in the long run. In all reality, if you don't possess the talent to make a real push in the playoffs, much less make the playoffs...then what's the next best option? Play for your draft position b/c it's obvious the team doesn't possess the current talent to be a real contender.

The best option for this team is to conduct a 5 game evaluation of their current talent and start making the list of who's playing well enough to be considered for next seasons roster. If the Texans can look competitive while orchestrating this eval, then they should finish the season with a respectable 5-11 record. I projected each 5 loss teams last 5 games to compile my guesstimate on the the 2018 NFL Draft order:

2018 NFL Draft Order:
1. 0-16 Browns
2. 3-13 49's **Garoppolo might be good for a couple down the stretch.**
3. 3-13 Giants
4. 4-12 Broncos
5. 4-12 Bears
6. 4-12 Colts
7. 4-12 Buccaneers
8. 5-11 Texans
9. 5-11 Dolphins
10. 5-11 Jets

**Worth mentioning, the Giants, Broncos, Dolphins or Jets could offer some stupid packages to the 49's and/or Bears to get high enough to draft one of the top rated QB's....or they may sit tight and hope one falls into their laps since I'm guessing the Browns and Giants will take Darnold and Rosen immediately if the 49's stay put.**

As for our Texans...it would be even better if they could just lose out but that might only mean a 1 spot jump. So, the Texans may find themselves trying to find an OT or OG at pick number 72. Just guessing but that Seahawks pick will probably be number 84 or later. The COMP Pick will probably be number 97. So, RD3 might look like this:

RD3-08-72
RD3-24-88 (Seahawks)
RD3-33-97 (COMP)

I'd be hard pressed to trade all 3 RD3 picks to move into RD2...b/c based on those picks and their location in the draft...it might buy a mid to late RD2 pick. I'm not 100% sure that the player gotten is worth the picks given versus just drafting in the slot. Now, if by some miracle a decent OL has slipped towards the RD3 12-18 slot, then the team might be able to offer their last 2 picks in RD3 as a way to move up and select another OL. Texans need a LT, RT, and OG first and foremost. A TE is also high on the wish list.

There's still talent on the board with 3 picks in the Top100 albeit, three between 70 and 100 but 3 nonetheless. Also, I have no desire to touch the 2019 NFL Draft to make-up for the bad position the team finds itself in for the 2018 draft. Like a stated before, draft BPA at positions of need without over reaching to accomplish this goal and hope that a couple surface to become starters the same year.

As Al Davis never said, "Just lose baby!". Maybe, the team will finally execute true marksmanship in identifying talent that makes some of us fans take back every bad word we've used to identify RS.

It just figures that the year we have a top 10 pick we traded the pick away. Although we had to trade that pick to get Watson so I'm fine with losing it but it's so Texans that it ended up that way.

However, I still cannot get over trading the 2nd round pick in the Osweiler deal. Just cut him. We didn't even use the cap space it gave us. We gave up a top 40 pick for nothing.

Screw draft position. Go out there and win! We should have beaten the Patriots. We should have beaten the Seahawks. We should have beaten the Colts. We should have beaten the Ravens.

While more talent is nice and all, this is already a talented roster that has the ability to beat anyone. The team just needs to learn how to win and expect to win every time they step on the field. They’re not going to learn that by losing games so they pick 10 spots higher in the 3rd round.

Play for draft position with no 1st or 2nd rd picks.

Brilliant strategy

Kinda like trading Os and this yrs 2nd for cap space they didn't use.

Those chickens are coming home to roost. It was really easy to see what was going to happen this yr if you weren't drunk on the koolaid the Texans org has some drinking every offseason.

I agree but at the time we had traded Brock Osweiler and a second-round pick to the Browns to clear up cap space, it was believed by many that we were going to pursue Tony Romo. All of the so-called experts on the NFL Network were reporting that the Cowboys were going to release Romo like that next day or week (whatever day it was).

But the Dallas Cowboys never released him (they tried to trade him to the Texans or Broncos - creating leverage for a higher bid). Jerry Jones wasn't bluffing and Tony Romo got tired of waiting and just retired.

So I understand why we traded Brock Osweiler. Hindsight is 20-20. Had we known Romo was going to be retire and not simply released by the Cowboys, of course we should have simply kept Osweiler for 2017. He would have been easier to release (less of a cap hit) next off-season. We could have still traded that future first for Deshaun Watson while keeping our second-round pick in the 2018 draft.

And truth be told, I'd much rather have Brock Osweiler starting at quarterback than Tom Savage right now. I can't believe I'm typing that but it's the truth.

We need to tank the rest of the season so that Cleveland can become a better team. They need lots of help.
LOL, the Cleveland Browns need Sonny Weaver Jr. aka Kevin Costner to become their general manager. Just like in the 2014 movie "Draft Day." I bet they could turn things around sooner rather than later.

The Astros put together 3 horrendous seasons to field the product, we as fans, are seeing today. The Browns perceived ineptitude this season has just set the table for their organization to take the next step, since they could be getting both Darnold or Rosen and Barkley (RB) to bolster their offense. Losing is bad, but if the right GM knows what to do, they can make lemonade out of those lemons.

Why didn't Ricky wait until after Romo was released to trade Os? He could've had a deal in place with the Browns and after Romo was released pulled the trigger on the trade. In short Ricky got played, just another of many of his gaffes.

Just that easy. Cuz you know the Browns would have agreed to that.

If they dont, you dont make the move. Then get your QB in the draft. You don't box yourself in hoping that things will break your way. That's a sure way to fail. But on the bright side McNair got to draw interest on the $$$$ Ricky didn't spend this yr. So I guess if you look at it this way McNair didn't lose either way.

I think Osweiler sitting on bench in Houston would have been a negative. I also voiced that I thought the deal allowing us to get a QB (and boy did we) was part of the trade of Os and the second. I am optimistic about getting some good players in 2018 and Watson will make all players look good. O'Brien should be able to add to playbook for Watson next season making him even better as a player. I can see Smith being lateraled or promoted to bring in another GM but I doubt it. McNair may wait few weeks into 2018 before extending Coach. If waiting to pony up for contract final year is good business on players should be same for coach.

I think we can get future starters in 2018 with the thirds and a 4th (3 OL and a safety) and then hit big in 2019 with 1st and two seconds. Watson just needs to stay healthy and there is the elephant in the room. OS gone and my focus is on DW and to see how Yates finishes 2017. He could be a good #2 behind Watson. 2018: LT Tyler Crosby (3b)/Davenport, LG Allen/Slade, Center Martin/Manz, RG Braden Smith (3a) /Kyle Fuller and RT free agent/Trevon Tate (4th).

The team is going to be 4-12

Give me the Os distraction and the 2nd.

The Os trade was all about saving McNair $$$$.

What in the last decade's history would make you think Ricky is going to be able to hit on four picks in the 3rd- 4th rds?
