2017 IN-SEASON PLAYER TRANSACTIONS

I would give up a 2nd/3rd for a all pro LT next yr.

If Joe Thomas or Joe Staley become available next yr I find a way to trade for one of these guys.

Didn't we just do that? We literally just traded away an All-Pro left tackle. And by your own standards, isn't it what matters on the field? You've given management hell over the years about being afraid of dangerous players, but when our best player rubs you the the wrong way politically (as opposed to criminally, which rubs everyone else the wrong way) he is pure evil and needs to be exorcised.

I gotta say that I think that's crazy talk. I know the need is there and it's severe but those guys are at the end of the line just like Duane Brown is (actually I think they're both older than him) and the cost would be too much for too little in return. Thomas in particular is like a walking injury report and I read not long ago that he was going to decide after the season whether to retire. I can't imagine Staley is in a much different frame of mind.

It's time to look for the next great OT not see how much more of a beating other teams old great OT's can take. I'm sure the Brown's and 49er's are both trying to figure out what they're going to do when those guys are gone. Why trade picks to them to help them solve that problem while at the same time making it harder for us to solve ours?

Thomas played over 1,000 consecutive snaps before getting hurt 2 weeks ago, so I would hardly say he's a walking injury report. Let him play LT for a couple of yrs and draft his replacement and let him play RT for a couple of yrs and learn. Just like the Eagles are doing with Lane Johnson/Peters.

That's a guy with over 10,000 (I think you typo'd on that and meant 10,000 too) consecutive snaps on his odometer and you think you're going to get another 4 quality years out of him? What in the world makes you think he'd even want to play four more years much less that those four years will somehow be as consistent as his first 10?

I wonder if you're not really just interested in taking Rick Smith to task in a year or two for overpaying a broken, over the hill OT. You can't possibly be thinking that Joe Thomas is going to end up playing 15 years in the league. Paying for either of those two guys is just kicking the can down the road (with an associated cost) to put off getting a book-end OT of our own for a couple of seasons at best. It's a bad idea dude.

Edit

I remembered reading this and didn't have much trouble finding it. He has been a real iron man over the years but don't think that he wasn't hurt.

NFL.com article

From the article:

On Tuesday, while brushing off what he considers a "minor" knee injury after getting rolled up during Monday's practice, Thomas casually revealed that he's played through multiple medial collateral ligament tears and other assorted injuries.

"I've had three MCL tears in my career, so I know the severity of what it feels like and how it happens. I've had two high-ankle sprains," Thomas said, per the Akron Beacon-Journal. "You kind of know your body after a while and when they look at it and they see there's not swelling and there's minimal pain and you can do certain exercises, that's kind of how they determine [if a player needs an MRI]."

He's a badass, no doubt about it but you want to go trade for a guy who has spent his entire career being an iron man and ignoring injuries that sideline most players? Haven't you learned anything from reading Doc's posts? If he's really been hurt as many times as he says then that stuff is gonna come home to roost eventually and when it happens you would have him on our roster?

Nope, Nope, Nope, Nope, Nope.....

Almost everything in life is subjective. Right now I'm not that interested in the NFL product so winning and losing even for. my favorite team doesn't really make a difference to me.

BTW, this is a great trade for the Seahawks.

You've never, ever held this front office up to what you'd consider subjective criticism though. It's always been all about black and white fielding the best winning team they can.

All of a sudden though..

PS - agreed on the last part.

I said 2 years so they can train up a rookie. Kinda like Salaam did with Brown. And yes, I. Think Thomas has 2 years left.
I'm typing from my phone. Sorry about the typos

I'm just playing. Sort of.

I don't get why everyone's so happy that we've swapped an all-pro at one of the most important positions in an area we have zero depth for a bag of magic beans.

I think its more along the lines of they traded away a player who did not want to be on the team. At least not for his current contract

I misunderstood what you wrote about him playing 2 years at LT and thought you meant "Then he'd play 2 years at RT". I see what you meant now.

I still think it's a bad idea though. We need to bring in the next Duane Brown not the current Joe Thomas (or Staley).

Thomas is closer to the end and maybe you can get 2 more years out of him. My opinion is thomas is closer to the all IR team than he is to the all pro team. This year's team probably beats down every team in the league.

Ricky needs to bring in Thomas and the next DB. Like Kubiak bringing in Salaam and DB. Then the Texans franchise which had crappy LT play for 5 years suddenly has pro bowl level LT play for a decade. Seems like a great plan to me.

You don't trade picks to get a Salaam. You use them to get the next DB.

Saw this in Wikipedia on Thomas' page.

"In 2017, Thomas revealed that he had been experiencing early stage memory loss, but that he would not allow it to affect his career."

Nice. I think I've solved the mystery of how anyone could play for the Cleveland Browns for that long and not want to leave.

I'm an at all costs guy, if I cared as much as I used to about whether this franchise wins a SB. Do I want them to win a SB? Yes

Do I care of they win a SB? Not so much anymore.

So for those who do care about them winning a SB it should still be a do everything to win issue, yes, we're in agreement..

Why not trade for Thomas and draft the next DB?

This next draft Ricky is very unlikely to find the next DB in the 2nd/3rd rd. I would feel better about the chances of landing a player like DB in the 2nd/3rd rd if Gibbs was still on staff, or as we discussed with the current blocking scheme Hudson Houck.

Rather use the picks needed for Thomas to move up.

My understanding was this is a much better OT class than usual.

It is,

I guess this is just a case of me wanting a young guy to learn from one of the best that has ever lived.

...while having a history of deriding management for their lack of support for criminally unacceptable assholes (not wanting to win).

Did you see Joe Mixon's big game Sunday? A 67 yard reception & 18 rushing yards on 11 carries.

The Texans have plucked DL Angelo Blackson from the Pats' PS to replace Covington on the active roster. 2015 4th round Draft pick by Titans. Waived early this preseason and picked up by the Pats a couple of days later. Limited experience while with the Titans, but that goes along with he has no significant injury history.

The Texans yesterday worked out CB Will Redmond, CB Sheldon Price, and WR/KR Josh Huff.

Redmond was waive injured from injured reserve on Oct. 31. He originally underwent an ACL repair Oct 2015 but was still chosen by the 49ers in the 2016 Draft. He tried to return in the 2016 preseason but re-injured his ACL and was placed on IR. Was originally designated to return, but could not rehab his knee successfully and was placed on permanent IR. This year, he continued his rehab, but week 1 was still not ready, and was therefore again placed on IR.

Price sustained a partial biceps tendon tear Oct last year and was placed on IR. The very beginning of Sept this year, he sustained a serious concussion and was again placed on IR, with symptoms continuing for over a month. He was released Oct 19 following resolution of his symptoms.

Huff has had only knick knack injuries throughout his short career.......back, knee, hamstring, concussion. He was pulled over last Nov for DUI, speeding, possession of an unloaded handgun (9mm) without a permit and a small amount of marijuana, and was released by the Eagles shortly thereafter. Late June this year, upon technicality, the charges were dropped. The Bucs picked him up, but waived him the beginning of Sept. He probably could only be considered as a STs player with the Texans.

All this on the heels of signing Johnson. What the hell is going on with this team.

Are the players we have on the roster that bad that we are entertaining signing any of these guys.

Are they really the best that is left to look at.

OK... I get it on Johnson. I suggested beating the bushes.
With this O line we need all the backup QB's we can get. Johnson the best of the lot available???

This calls for a sig change.

Cardinals rookie OL Dorian Johnson managing liver condition with family's support
http://www.espn.com/blog/nflnation/...managing-liver-condition-with-familys-support

It’s been six months since Dorian Johnson was diagnosed with primary sclerosing cholangitis, a chronic disease of the bile ducts, after a routine blood test at the NFL scouting combine, and life hasn’t changed all that much for the Arizona Cardinals’ rookie offensive lineman.

He has cut out whatever alcohol he used to drink, which, the 22-year-old said, wasn’t much to begin with.

He didn’t drink coffee, so abiding by the doctor’s orders to stop consuming large amounts of caffeine wasn’t difficult.

He can’t take over-the-counter acetaminophen, which he wasn’t a fan of taking anyway.

And he has been diligent about taking his medicine, five pills a day -- three in the morning, two at night.

...

The Texans have signed WR Cobi Hamilton from the PS to the active roster..............when we first signed him:

The Texans will be working out former Steelers WR Cobi Hamilton sometime this week. The Steelers were packed with WRs prior to final cutdown. But he has not shown himself to really be anything special that I can see.

They have in turn signed FA RB Troymaine Hope to the PS........he was considered a promising young RB by the Seahawks in preseason 2016...........placed on their PS......activated Nov 15, 2016........suffered a high ankle sprain his first game in (Nov 20)...........tried to come back 2 weeks later........was totally ineffective because of his ankle............and was placed on IR.............the Seahawks released him, then re-signed him in April..........again he looked promising in OTAs, but was waived this past June.............the fact he wasn't waived with an injury designation suggests he's supposedly since recovered.

Sounds to me like we're in full-on "Roster Churning Mode" for the remainder of the year looking for guys who might be able to help us next season and maybe beyond. This I am fine with as we're down to what? 5 games with no realistic hope of playing beyond the end of the regular season.

Damn, I thought Lamarr Houston looked decent in spots and was working rust off. Guess not.

Next season up!

Unfortunately it appears that at the same time he was working rust off of some places the Texans thought "Bondo" was starting to show in others. I had high hopes for him too but the Texans are all in on looking at the kids these days. I still wonder what he'd be like with some more time with the team but I guess it's not to be.
