Michael Bennett to sit during National Anthem this season

CARSON, Calif. -- Seahawks Pro Bowl defensive end Michael Bennett started what he said will be his season-long refusal to stand for the national anthem on Sunday before his team's preseason victory over the Los Angeles Chargers.

Bennett, like free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick last season, said his gesture is to raise awareness to racism and intolerance. Bennett did not single out law enforcement or any particular group as someone or something he disagreed with but instead said Americans need to try and bridge prejudices and stop acts of hatred.

"I hope that I can activate everybody to get off their hands and feet and go out into the communities and push helping each other," he told reporters after Sunday's game. "Sit down with somebody that's the opposite sex, sit down with somebody that's the opposite race, different religion and understand that people are different and go out and join the community and try to change the society, change what you're a part of. If you don't like it, keep changing it."

Just stop doing the National Anthem at NFL games, or do what South Park did on that Kaepernick episode. "Please rise, or sit, or take a knee ... to honor America ...".

Bennett has a new book out entitled "Things That Make White People Uncomfortable", so this is perfect timing for the opportunistic young entrepreneur to score some national pub to stimulate his book sales.
He oughta give Kapernick some royalties for the additional revenue Bennett will probably realize from the pub.

Good for him. If the situation unfolded as he claims, I hope he upsets their apple cart mightily.

Do you know anything about Bennett or his brother? Just watch their documentary special on ESPN. Both brothers have always been a total piece of work with terrible reputations in character. They don't even try to hide it on that 30/30 either. Kind of strange that you of all people would possibly believe a story like this from him knowing he has a book title "Things that make white people uncomfortable." Clearly this guy has race on his mind constantly and wants to inject the issue everywhere he can. Could his story be 100% true? Sure it could. So could one of those Bigfoot stories to I suppose. Given his history, I don't believe it for even a second. He isn't out here trying to do any good. He just wants to create more hate as his methods are just non constructive. He's a hell of a defensive lineman, but again we don't care to hear the politics from NFL players. Wrong platform.

Why would they stop over a bunch of self entitled athletes? Simple solution is to make them stand or let them sit a game in suspension. If they do it again, double it until they either stop or expel themselves from the season. Losing game day checks won't last long. They'll stop. They'll ***** for a few months about it, but eventually they'll forget about it. The NFL is a privilege and it isn't a political platform that fans want to be exposed to. They need to nip it in the bud, or they'll risk creating a huge problem where ratings drop again and it will be a lot harder to solve later once the media keeps digging their heels into it and it will all be literally over nothing. If the NFL can suspend Tom Brady for 4 games over zero evidence and other players over allegations where they aren't even arrested and give Goodell the ridiculous power that he has, forcing the athletes to stand for a country's National Anthem is a piece of cake. It really is. It's such a non issue, but it creates a popular hot topic for the CNN crowds to keep stirring, so they better do something like REAL SOON.

Read my post again. It's not long. Focus on the phrase "If the situation unfolded as he claims" and ask yourself why I would put that in.

Read it just fine. That's why my question to you was if you knew anything about the history of the Bennett brothers. Both are really violent and have been unapologetic about it in the past. This one in particular just released a book to spew racism. He's said all types of awful things about police in the past over the last two years as well, and has been pretty consistently shown volatile behavior a lot. The odds that he was just victimized by police without cursing and yelling, and threatening them while they were likely questioning him in the middle of gun shots going off and people running around in a frenzy is likely pretty low. If this was Andre Johnson we're talking about, then I'd likely be giving him the benefit of the doubt. With Bennett, I'm not buying for a second that he didn't likely force a confrontation with the police the minute he was questioned. I hope they had body cams and that we're able to see and hear the footage.

I have no idea what actually happened, but I don't have any problem believing that the cops misbehaved AND that he is trying to inject racism into it. There is an obvious element of racism in some cases of police misconduct. But there are plenty of cases of cops just crossing the line because they're power hungry walking attitudes. So while I don't know anything about Michael Bennett or the company he keeps, I'll take your word for it. And that doesn't change my opinion that the cops should have their world rocked IF (big word) events unfolded as Bennett claims. Now, if a body cam or other evidence shows that he was physically resisting arrest or in some way posing a real threat that warranted the sort of treatment he claims he received, then I'm on the cops' side, of course.

Of the two parties, only one of them is a government agent being paid with tax dollars to behave in a certain manner.

Earlier today they played some sort of audio where you could hear a portion of it, and Bennett was screaming and yelling like I figured he likely was. It was a small portion that sounded like it was from someone's phone or something. Bennett brothers are both from Alief and had quite a bit of history there from what I've heard. Last season Bennett went off on a reporter that was a cancer survivor screaming and yelling in the locker room questioning what he has ever gone through in his life or what adversity he has faced. He is known for flying off the handle and saying outrageous things. He's been saying all types of bad stuff about cops for like two years now, so I'm not surprised at all that there was a bad incident where Bennett was involved with police. You have to remember that gun shots were going off, and there was chaos and police were searching for suspects that may have fit his description. I'm not sure about that part. I just know that in a situation like that it isn't that shocking that the police might come question you or intense on trying to figure out who or where the perpetrator is. Bennett likely got extremely defensive and outraged and it escalated from there is my guess. I don't know of course, and I'm mainly speculating on Bennett's history of hating cops and having difficulty in restraining himself when he's angry.

I think we'll get to see footage and more audio from this since it was in Vegas though. I have a slight hunch that more information will come out and hopefully those body cams got something. Dealing with a guy the size of Bennett who is really angry is likely going to have any cop really cautious in how they handle him.

EDIT: A recent statement by the police department states it was two Hispanic officers and that Bennett became defensive and belligerent when they were searching a lot of people and says that body cam footage does exist and they expect it to exonerate their officers of any racial profiling in the recent report from the link below.

Let's see.. Football player who's been openly negative towards the police has a altercation with police officers.. Gee what a coincidence

I wasn't there so this is pure speculation, but I'd put money on it that he was out there poking bears..

I also love it when athletes/celebrities say "they didnt know who I was" or "do you know who I am"..like they give a flying **** about that.

This story is starting to unfold pretty quickly, and his claims are getting more and more like a "crying wolf" attempt.

The police union is now requesting that the NFL and Goodell pursue an investigation into Bennett after they've done their own internal affairs investigation. They sound pretty confident. Bennett initially ran from the police as well, and his actions made them more suspicious. Bennett also failed to make a complaint with the department after this all happened, and then popped up 10 days later with all these wild claims. His only hope is that the leftwing media spins this agains the police successfully which isn't out of the question.

Maybe I'm just too damn cynical about people in general, but I cannot help but wonder if this is just an opportunity for a publicity stunt since his new book - "How to Make White People Uncomfortable” - is supposed to release early next year.

The two police officers, both Hispanic, said it was his behavior, not his race, that were the only factors in chasing and apprehending him. According to civilian witnesses and video, there were many black guys around that were not considered suspects. They did not hide and then run into traffic as soon as they saw the police.

“Our officers had reasonable suspicion, which is the constitutional standard, to detain Bennett until they could determine whether he was involved in the shooting,” Grammas wrote in the letter to Goodell. “Our officers, who are both minorities, had the legal right, an obligation, to detain Bennett based on the nature of the call and Bennett’s unusual and suspicious actions. Our officers did not detain Bennett because he was, 'a black man in the wrong place at the wrong time.'"

They're already doing that.. Chris Carter was on TMZ live today promoting his "first things first show" and he was talking about Colin Kaepernick is being black balled and then piggybacked it into this Vegas incident bad mouthing the police, just because there was a video simply showing a police officer putting handcuffs on him.

Of course. We all know they won't be taking the safety of police lives that were actively looking for a shooter. That's why I said successfully. They've been successful in spinning those stories in cases like Michael Brown and Alton Sterling, so very likely people won't care what comes out or what facts exist. If they already hate all police they'll only believe that racism and brutality was involved. But the facts are already out there that he ran from the police and was the only guy to do that, and it's on tape where he's screaming at the police and not cooperating in a manner where if you're innocent you'd want to let the police do their job. Between Bennett's book and his false claims he should be facing a suspension, but the league will be to afraid to address his racism. We all know that. He'll just continue to embarrass the Seahawks and do everything possible to be the next Kaepernick.
