Not meaningless, but Ricky's track record in rds 3-4 leave alot to be desired.

This is true... but he does (ok maybe it's wishful thinking) or the coaching staff/scouts are better i this area lately

If a deep class should be quality in the 3rd for hopefully 2 picks and again in the 4th

Yep,

Sad part is the 2018 draft is really deep at the QB/OL positions and the Texans have already shot their wad.
Exactly! Like I have said before, when Bob McNair starts worrying about the 2019s and 2020s, the 2017s and 2018s will take care of their selves. Living in the moment with a box of band aids will not.

If this turns out to be true they still need to stock up on O-linemen in the 3rd or 4th rounds IMO! Remember, they are projected to get a 3rd round Compensatory pick and maybe a 5th or 6th round too. Maybe they could use some of these to trade up into the 2nd round to get a good OT. Just a thought.

Hopefully

It's really just a shame that Ricky had to trade a 2nd rd pick to get rid of his boo boo and save his dad 10 mil in the process.

I really blame Kubiak for all of this, he's the one that gave Ricky the opportunity to be McNair's boot lapper. LOL

Ok, that's contributing nothing. It's done and we have to live with it. So what should they do now? What FA's may be available and who are the prospects that may be available with the probable choices they'll have?

Let's move on for the sake of this thread

I'm not even really going to be into the 2018 draft next yr.

I will try to keep the TT Mock Draft tradition going.

Sure hope you change your mind about being in the draft. Some of the best work by others that RS come out in the middle rounds. I want to know what we could do and then what we missed. You're good at that

I tend to agree with SBT most of the time in his discontent for the upper level mgt. of the Texans, they're some idiots sometimes. With that said and trying to put it all behind us, what the Texans need next year is a lot of luck with regards to injuries in the 2017 season, a lack of injuries that creates a lack of needs in the 2018 draft. A great year from Clowney and corresponding trade wouldn't hurt anything either. We've got our own 3rd plus a possible comp. 3rd, maybe we can trade up into the 2nd for someone good that falls on draft day, happens every year. JMO, but overall I think 2018 isn't looking good for us unless a lot of moves are made by Rick Smith, and I don't trust him and McNair to make smart moves.

Unless what we have is a lot better than feared

It's very early, so it's hard to say anything really about the 2018 draft for the Texans, but we do know three things.

1. They'll either not have a first and second rounder, or they'll trade up and have a lack of picks throughout the draft.

2. They'll need to target OL depth. No explanation really needed.

3. They'll need to target atleast 1 safety prospect. The safety group on this team is amongst the worst on the league.

I'd lean toward not trading up and concentrate on depth, but it's early. I don't know almost anything about the depth of this class.

1. DBs lost Quentin Demps 6 INTs 39 tackles + AJ Bouye so that is significant however we had tons of cap cash [$30 million] and that is without any dumps. So like or not , agree or not..Texans like what they have. I do like that corners Kevin Johnson returns to start and the rookie Treston Decoud is very interesting. Safety Hal had 47 Tackles 2 INTs and a sack looks forward to another good season. Corey Moore part time resulted in 23 tackles & should push to start. There has been suggestions that Kareem Jackson could play safety and I think we will be stronger here than some think.

2. We did well in mid rounds drafting 2016 & 2017 so I think 2018 should be decent without trading up. I am ok with using following year picks early but we need to get better fast so that doesn't continue unless for a super star. I also think that can happen after 2018.

We ***** and moan about needing QB and we went and got two. Os did not work out, spit on ground and then get back into the fight. We have seen nothing so far to say 'oh crap' on Watson.

Speaking of 2018 draft... we all know that OL should be priority (presumably)

Who are prospects we should look at... even if we have to make a move to go get them. We don't have much ammo, but say we trade Clowney or Johnson or Foreman or RS....

Who should I look at that will be there late first thru the late 3rd that can help this team?

Just my opinion but good OTS as late as round 5. Of course later you wait..player may be gone. If Lamm and Davenport work out we will be drafting for depth. QB Looking good round 3. Talent wise we should be good 2018 roster.

Any names I should look for/watch this year?

Yeah should post soon. I am working on list of suggestions but things keep popping up on personal schedule and I am behind. As you know these players will be suggestions only with many having minimum info so far. Players move up and down especially once college season begins.

I'm on board with a QB in the 3rd. We need to develope a solid backup for the next four years and McCray seems a solid option. I've had Okorafor starred as likely being there for us and seems to be a solid developmental OT. I would add TE Dalton Schultz as the third 3rd round selection.

Third round, in no particular order, QB, OT and TE, all key offensive needs.

(Edit) Opps, wrong TE. Now corrected.

I'd like to see the Texans invest a RD6, RD7 or get LT, Bentley Spain (NC) as an UDFA. Still waiting to see. I'm still waiting to see when the NC Pro Day will happen. I think this guy is a sleeper and if available that far down the draft...then it's an easy investment for me. My biggest concern, with the demands at LT could the Texans get a way with hiding him on the PS for a season of development?

time flies I guess cause none of those guys are of an interest now. White is probably more a 6th round now & I'd probably go Riley Ferguson over White now. I thought O'Brien would have brought in a vet QB to back #4 but he might go with couple of UDFA to develop hoping Watson remains healthy.

That's a big gamble! I don't see them doing that. My guess is they get an experienced FA backup QB like Matt Moore or even bring back Weeden again. They may still take a QB late in the Draft or as an UDFA but I just don't see BOB not getting an experienced backup QB and just hoping Watson doesn't get hurt.

We need to get off this QB carousel. I agree we need to sign a veteran FA but not a short term deal. We need a multi-year contract to secure the position for the near term. We need to draft a QB to begin his developement for the mid-term. If such a player can be gotten low in the draft, or as an UDFA, great. But IMO, you get talent higher in the draft and I'd prefer we get that talent, if he's there or when he's there. If the player is there, I'd take a QB in the 3rd, over any other position than OT or TE.

Mobile, pretty strong arm and pretty good accuracy and has promise............and should be available for us if we're interested as a type of QB that at some point in time could backup Watson.

    Alex McGough, QB, Florida International
    Height: 6-2. Weight: 220.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.74.
    Projected Round (2018): 6-FA.

3/10/18: McGough has some arm talent and is athletically gifted. In 2017, he completed 65 percent of his passes for 2,798 yards with 17 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Unfortunately, McGough broke his collarbone in the Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl. That injury prevented playing in an all-star game and could restrict his pre-draft workouts. McGough completed 58 percent of his passes in 2016 for 1,891 yards with 13 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. As a sophomore, he completed 64 percent of his passes for 2,722 yards with 21 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

..............................
FYI, he broke his LEFT collar bone. He is a righty. Should not have any long-term throwing implications

I suggested we sign Tyrod Taylor to long term deal but most said he would not sign unless he could start. Taylor went to Cleveland who is expected to draft a QB (odds seem to be Sam Darnold or Baker Mayfield with the latter considered by many to be most NFL ready) that could start before 2018 over. Watson, basically still a rookie experience wise and with his injuries + our Oline would seem like a QB Taylor would've chanced a back up role on.

Looking at QB's, Kyle Lauletta catches my attention. Was Senior Bowl MVP, with the south squad, coached by our own BOB. He may be there in the sixth.

One profile says he "climbs the pocket and stands tall in the face of pressure"; but also says he throws well on the run and "slides well and uses his athleticism to extend plays".

Thoughts, anyone?

Appears biggest reason he’ll drop is lack of arm strength. If anyone would know it’s OB after spending a week coaching him.

Trying to find a "match" to be Watson's backup is a bit of a fool's errand. The fact of the matter is there are very few guys with Watson's skill set. You're going to want to build an offense around his talent because of what he can do, but trying to find another guy like him to be able to run that offense is going to be very difficult. Those guys don't grow on trees.

You're going to be looking at a guy like Kaepernick (who is virtually untouchable right now with his lawsuit against the league), a guy like RG3 (who can't stay healthy and doesn't want to be a backup), or you will be left digging for late round guys like J.T. Barrett and Quinton Flowers (who have severe passing deficiencies from the pocket).

Your best bet is to do your very best to protect Watson and keep him healthy and, if he gets injured, then you need a reliable guy who can come in and not lose games while you lean on your defense.

I’d be super happy with Riley Ferguson QB Memphis. Memphis ran a lot of plays similar to what we ran when Watson was lighting it up.
