2017 NFL Draft - 1st Round discussion thread

I like going up to get your guy.

I don't think this was that more than it was desperation that came from your own mismanagement and failed coaching. And that's a bigger problem than any one layer.

Go Deshaun, kick some ass bro!

How do we know Watson was their guy?

They could have targeted Mahommes for all we know & going to get Watson was a move out of desperation.

I'd like to think Watson was their guy, but the rumors were that they wanted Mahommes.

Mayock opened the broadcast by saying what a boner the Texans had for Watson when they were discussing landing spots for the QBs, FWIW.

Tempted to watch ESPN just to see what a shitshow that must be like after all of the bloodletting they just did on both sides of the camera

Well if he truly was their guy props to the front office for making it happen. Hopefully it works out. I just hope a year from now it's not a Rick Smith/Bill Obrien he said she said it was his choice my choice not my choice bs like asswater...

I go back to something I said earlier about our front office -- they aren't afraid to swing for the fence. A miss on Os and Watson sets us back pretty good but if Watson is the franchise guy they think he is, it's worth the trade up and then some. I like rooting for a team that is willing to make aggressive moves like this.

IMO this team would not move up 13 spots to #12 in a panic. Is it possible that Houston and Cleveland discussed this move when they made the Osweiler trade?

Good point...I guess it could go either way...just seemed we made the trade pretty quick after KC jumped to take Mahomes.

Wow... Peppers could have been ours.

It's not just the draft chart.. it's the fact that next year we'll have to watch the first 64 (atleast) players come off the board before we'll even be able to add to our team... that will come back to haunt us unless we knock the hell out of the rest of this draft.. and find some steals late and I don't trust our FO to do that.

QB wasn't our only hole and Watson is most likely a year away at the soonest. He's got a lot to learn. I just don't like losing high picks, especially with a G.M. who sucks in the middle rounds

This first I can take, because atleast we got a prospect back.. The second I can't..they just pissed that one away, but all of this could've been avoided if they just stopped being the smartest people in the room and took a chance on a QB years ago.

All I know, if this doesn't work out with all the picks they just handed out..it's going to set this team back atleast 5 years..maybe more.

Totally agree that it sucks that we don't have that 2nd rounder we traded away. I can live with not having the first given what we acquired.

It appears that the Texans are planning acquisitions next year to be through FA. They will have a TON of cap space. If Watson plays and plays well, and with this defense we have, players may actually want to come and play for us.

I hear what you are saying but after Beard Boy, Bald Boy, and Laser Boy can blame the fan base for reaching for a QB after trading away a 2nd to get rid of mistake then basically spend two firsts to draft a "maybe"?

Look I was glad to get rid Oz, but damn we don't pick until the weekend next year and it's not like this team doesn't have holes. This is a big reach, big. This team is t in a position to reach.

I would have gladly taken Reuben Foster and ran with Savage until the QB situation changes in the league.
which holes cannot be addressed this draft?

Quincy Carter is most definitely a better athlete... Better than Brady, better than Manning, Montana, etc...
So I'm not really sure what your point is or that it proves what you want it to prove
But he didn't throw 17 INTs when most of passes were predetermined

Do we really know Watson was their guy? Couldn't it have been a panic move?
I don't see panic -- I see aggressively pursuing who they want. Maybe they wanted Mahomes more and were surprised he went that early but that still doesn't make moving up for Watson a panic move. There's still a lot of qb's on the board they could have waited on.

It is a panic move to an extent, but they were in panic mode as soon as Romo retired. Watson was probably still their guy, but I doubt the expected to make the move, at lest from that far back

could be if they had taken a chance on a QB years ago, you would ***** about that. It is also possible that 2018 first and second would not have brought us starters.

I've been advocating the Texans trade down & acquire future draft picks for a while now. If we're going to be 8-8, we were going to need the draft capital to afford a move up for a franchise QB. So I'm not arguing with you about that.

I too am upset we gave up capital we couldn't afford. But, maybe the Texans are planning on rolling over that $10M freed up in the Osweiller deal & going hard at FAs next year to compensate for the lack of a first & second round pick. I know... I prefer a mixture of draft & FA, heavily tilted towards the draft.

But, one 1st & one 2nd is not going to set us back five years. It would be like the Patriots or Colts who routinely fail in the first & 2nd round

I'm not just talking about the picks obviously... I'm talking about Watson (if he doesn't work out)+the picks. Hell the Assweiler deal has already set us back

I think you're right about not expecting to have to move up so far, but I'm still not sure I understand how it indicates panicking. They could have sat back and waited on Peterman, Kizer, Webb, Kaaya, Dobbs, Beathard, etc. But they didn't feel that any of them had potential to be a franchise guy so they gave up a 1st to make it happen. If you want to criticize the front office it's a panic move I guess.

We need a couple of OL, then S, ILB, TE, DT. Can't get all that with what we have left this year knowing we don't have a 1st and 2nd next year.
First we are both just giving opinions. We need only one OL.. at RT. Safety can be resolved with a safety in round two with Melifonwu or a corner to move KJ to safety. We don't have to have an ILB though I do have one in my mock (round four) to add depth and replace Cushing in 2018. We are set at TE. DT are you talking Nose Tackle ( I mock DJ Jones in 7th this draft) for depth or a DT/DE opposite Watt. Most on this MB seem to think Clowney will play most of his snaps across from Watt.

We can use free agency for a starter or two next year with huge cap availability and rounds 3 thru 5 for depth.

Personally it hurts me to see what McNair/Smith have done to the Texans

Despite how bad Rick Smith's been, he's been money in the first round. I usually give him the benefit of doubt for first round picks. Doesn't he have the highest hit percentage in the first round in the entire NFL?

yeah it seems before 7 pm many on here were willing to go all in to get a QB and IMO should be giving props to team management. Surprised that McNair has not been all over tv bragging on Watson as he did say some time ago we'd draft a QB.

Jury is still out on Fuller, but everyone else has turned out pretty damn good.

How would Texans fans react if they did NOT have a 1st RD and 2nd RD draft picks in 2018?

How will Texans fans feel if what was there 1st RD in 2018 is a Top 10 pick? #1 pick? and what was their 2nd RD pick in 2018 is a Top 40 pick?

So he's due for anow epic bust soon... law of averages & all that.

Who's butthurt? Watson is a prospect with flaws in his game who threw 17 ints last season who has no legit QB to sit and learn from. Am I supposed to be excited about this?

Why he can't sit and learn behind weeded? How many picks did Matt Ryan and Winston throw?

As the WR2 I was ok with his stats considering QB and Hopkins "off" season. 635 yards with 13.5 avg could be better but okay. Fuller & Hop should have better seasons.

Learn from Weeden?? That's laughable. Learn what, proper clipboard holding technique? Although, Weeden is undefeated with Houston...

It's about learning how to prepare to play qb. The vet doesn't always have to be a great ex qb, learning how to study game film is an experience in itself.
