The New New JaDeveon Clowney Thread

Having seen this Clowney tweet in the INJURY THREAD first, I posted these comments on this recent event there. Will repost here.

As I questioned before when it was first announced that he would be used often as a DE this year. Coming out of a DE 3-point stance puts much more stress on the knees than coming out of 2-point stance. Although this surgery was on the opposite knee from the microfracture side, the stress is undoubtedly affecting both joints. Since it is reported that he is not expected to miss any of the offseason, this "minor" surgery is likely a meniscus excision or articular cartilage/fibrous tissue "cleanup"......these surgeries are a short term solution and are not considered an articular cartilage repair procedure, but rather a temporizing "palliative" treatment to reduce pain, mechanical restriction and inflammation. These are the same type of injuries that set up a player for the beginning of the road to microfracture surgery. Hopefully, the area of articular cartilage involvement is very limited and/or involving only the medial meniscus, not the lateral meniscus again. Now it is being reported that he is missing the ProBowl because of this injury/surgery.....not as previously reported because of his elbow injury.

I remain concerned that Clowney's knees will succumb to quicker progression of his existing knee problems and will encourage new damage to his knees more predictably and quickly while manning the DE position more consistently than the OLB position.

Hopefully the Texans don't give him an extension with an insane amount of guaranteed money. I like what I saw out of him in 2016 but I'm also very concerned about his durability. Has he had an offseason where he hasn't had a procedure, "minor" or otherwise?

Happy Valentines-day and happy birthday Jadeveon. I imagine you will be celebrating your 24th with your significant other so enjoy both your BD & VD today JD !

That's not a bad thing when you consider trades.

Gotta secure our future one way or another. I don't think they're looking at Clowney. I think it's more of a prove you're healthy situation. Would love to see both JD and JJ healthy and terrorizing defenses.

At this point in our QB situation, its about the only hope at a season we have.

Are you on mobile?

That's odd. I just tried on work pc and on my cell - both rendered properly.
Any other sites giving you issues?

No I'm on my laptop- Win 7

It could be my Kaspersky AV and ad blockers

I think only twitter vids unplayable

Anything to worry about here ? I didn't see Clowney in for a single snap last night and I do think eventually one of the announcers said he was not playing and that was it ?

No real comments have come out beyond that. It seems that too many times the Texans disingenuously say major players are not practicing or playing only because they are being rested (e.g., Hopkins with later revelation of his hand injury) or that they are protecting them for the season. Although it's possible, It is harder to believe that there is an entirely benign explanation for Clowney being entirely absent from an opportunity to go against Brady.

Texans Pro Bowl pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney didn't practice again Monday, working on the side as he hasn't practiced in a week and was held out of a preseason game against the New England Patriots.
Clowney isn't injured, according to coach Bill O'Brien. A source not authorized to speak publicly emphasized that it's nothing serious, saying that Clowney is dealing with general soreness and tight muscles and will be ready for the season-opener Sept. 10 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Mcclain said on the radio this morning that judging by how he moved in drills off to the side whatever is wrong with him is not a leg injury. Which is encouraging I guess...

I just want him and Watt to be healthy this season to see what happens. I assume it's something like this:

I hope McClain is right. But drills you typically see on the side are pretty much straight away or soft turn drills. These drills can look pretty good even when there are significant lower limb problems. They typically don't involve sudden cutting, especially against resistance. The question boils down to would you have McClain evaluate your lower limb for signs of injury?

I'm not sure how you can evaluate something when you don't know what you are looking for????

I hope that Clowney has a huge year and can stay healthy.

If he does, then I'll have to come back and concede all of my arguments between him and Bortles. Bortles looks like a bust until proven otherwise I'd have to say so I was wrong about him all together. Glad we didn't get him.

I'd like to see Clowney become a monster this year.

Agreed. I'll go far as to say that if Watt stays healthy that JC will challenge for DPOY

I concur. I am hoping the year off watching from the side has helped JJ understand scheme fits and how his adlibbing doesn't always equal results. If JJ comes back and does JJ feats WITHIN the scheme, Clowney will be hell coming off the weak side.

By the way, have you seen young Watt in pre season? He's tearing it up out there. I was so hoping that the Texans would somehow get their hands on him in the draft. That would have been so neat. I didn't realize he ended up in Pittsburg of all places. That sucks, but oh well. Maybe he can become one of those iconic Steelers defensive players. With Watt blood, I'm sure he'll over achieve and exceed people's expectations as long as they aren't expecting him to become JJ.

I wish our players would train lik Brady at 40 years pld. At least his stretching and makining himself more limber.

So do I, but realistically most athletes aren't going to go through a limited diet like Brady does. I won't knock people who won't either, because it isn't necessary for people to be great players. It sure does help and increase the chances of high performance and body functioning. Brady has a commitment to the game like no other, because he truly loves and is totally addicted to it. Most players aren't. That's a big reason why he's the GOAT. He loves football more than 90% of the other players. Hell, he'll likely keep going for a few more years as long as he doesn't have a monster injury. After what he has accomplished it's arguably foolish since he's gambling on his brain from CTE damage potentially. He loves football and the comradely of his coaches and teammates that much though.

I would've drafted him instead of trading up for Watson, but I have faith in Savage, so yeah...

I originally wanted him, but after CND's medical eval he was a 1st rd pass for me. 2nd rd I was still on board. I'm more of a fix the OL 1st kinda guy. But Watt is going to be a pro bowl type talent eventually if (Big if) he can stay healthy.

Mike Freeman's 10-Point Stance: Jadeveon Clowney Is NFL's Most Underrated Star
1. Jadeveon Clowney Becoming the Star We Thought He'd Be

Jadeveon Clowney remembers his rookie year, in 2014, when he tore his meniscus, and later had microfracture surgery. That first season lasted one full quarter.

Clowney was asked to reflect on the start to his NFL career after a Sunday this season that saw him make yet another spectacular play that caused the eyes of everyone who saw it to virtually pop out of their heads.
"I never had any doubts about myself," Clowney told B/R, "but I know some people had doubts about me. I don't think they do anymore."

Now, four years into his career, we are watching Clowney develop into maybe the best defensive player in the sport. He's not the only candidate, but there's little doubt he belongs in the conversation.

Clowney has also emerged as a leader in the locker room. He was a key component in the team's decision-making process on how to handle the ugly comments from owner Bob McNair, who reportedly referred to players as "inmates" when discussing how to address the anthem issue. Most of the Texans players took a knee in protest during the anthem.

After most of the Texans players knelt in protest of their owner's comments during the anthem last week in Seattle, I asked Clowney if he felt things had been resolved. "I don't think so," Clowney said. "I'd say no."

His dressing as an inmate at a Halloween party earlier this week would seem to speak to that point, although Clowney told the Houston Chronicle (via Pro Football Talk) that he was not trying to send a message to the Texans owner.

Missed the live telecast of the game last Sunday so watched my recording yesterday and yea, Clowney was kicking some azz in the PAC-NW over the weekend.
That's about as well as he's played in the regular season since last year vs Oakland in Mexico City.
When does the Pro Bowl voting begin - I need to start racking up votes for JD when it does

Jadeveon Clowney hunkered down at the line of scrimmage, a man determined to stonewall Arizona Cardinals veteran running back Adrian Peterson one more time.

In another disruptive display during a season filled with them, the Texans' Pro Bowl pass rusher busted into the Cardinals' backfield as he and rookie linebacker Zach Cunningham swarmed Peterson for a 1-yard loss on a clutch fourth-quarter tackle.

The turnover on downs after the ill-fated 4th-and-1 call was one of the key plays of a 31-21 victory Sunday during which Peterson was bottled up. The former NFL Most Valuable Player was limited to just 26 rushing yards on 14 carries. Clowney thoroughly dominated with five tackles, three for losses, two sacks and three quarterback hits.

The Texans' hybrid outside linebacker-defensive end was practically unblockable, especially on this pivotal fourth-down sequence midway through the fourth quarter as Cardinals coach Bruce Arians made a decision to go for it that he later regretted.

"I wasn't surprised," Clowney said. "It was a decision they needed to make that first down. The play itself, they got me early in the game. On the first play of the game, I peeked my head inside and (Peterson) bounced outside on me. I said I wasn't going to do that anymore in the game.
Clowney established a new career high with eight sacks after finishing with six sacks last season when he was named to the Pro Bowl for the first time.

"Clowney, of course, was just phenomenal," Texans owner Bob McNair said. "Oh, he is something. On every play, if he isn't making the tackle or knocking the ball down or sacking, he's making the quarterback move around or redirect. He's stopping the running play. He's just hard to defend."

Clowney has 15 tackles for losses, one less than he recorded all of last season and now has 41 for his career to pass linebacker Brian Cushing for the fourth-most in franchise history.

Bob McNair, Texans owner, says Clowney was phenomenal ? Of course he was phenomenal, and that's because he's JD Freakin Clowney.
BTW, another one of Rick Smiths Draft picks.

Yep,

And to think some here wanted the 1st pick in the draft to be Blake Bortles.

Really interested to see how they use Clowney with Watt/Mercilus next season. It's obvious he's at his best when he's "the guy" and not playing a supporting role. Maybe with JJ's injuries he'll be the one to step back and maintain gap discipline so Clowney can freelance and wreck opposing teams.

It would be better for us if we could mix it up... where Clowney, Watt, & Mercilus can pick their spots & opposing teams don't know which will wreck havoc on a given play.
