Texans random thought of the day

Winning the AFC South is an accomplishment.

Taking a crap in the morning is an accomplishment.

Taking a crap or watching the Texans offense, guess which one gave me more enjoyment?

I didn't take much pleasure in watching the Texans offense either.

However, when someone says that McNair doesn't know what he's doing I'm going to point to those division championships four of the last six years. May not mean anything other than McNair doing it better than three other NFL teams.

If anyone's going to ask me if I think O'b is a good coach, I'll point to those two division titles. The fact that he doesn't have a losing season.

Same thing with Rick. Yeah, he could have done better. But like I said in a previous post. I'm only unhappy about three positions. RG, RT, & QB. QB being pretty damn relevant to the number of wins we've had the past ten years or whatever it is now.

But I'm one of those fans who would be happy if all we did was win our home games, so take it for what it's worth. I'm a season ticket holder, I bought those tickets for their entertainment value. Winning games is pretty danged entertaining.

Fair enough.

I want more than just winning the division or home games.

I want all teams to fear playing the Texans. This includes upper level teams like Green Bay/Pats/Pitts etc... I want to go to Foxboro next yr and feel like if the Texans play well they will in, instead of hoping the Texans dont get embarrassed or Os/Schaub dont crap the bed.

& my question is why? Do you get a bonus or something?

Don't get me wrong, I'll be even happier if we're the new Patriots over the next 15 years. But like you, I'm not going to leave the Texans. Unlike you, I'm not going to gripe about crap I can't control.

So pointing out what is obviously wrong and questioning the motives of ownership is griping?

Sorry you see my thoughts in this light. I'm just in this for the discussion.

Unlike you, I'm not going to gripe about crap I can't control.

I take this back. If I felt like you do, I probably would gripe quiet a bit about it.

I know that there have been Cinderella teams throughout the history of the NFL & looking back we can see "over night" turnarounds. We're not that.

I accepted the fact that the first four years of this franchise was most likely going to be crap. Expansion team & all that. I think Kubiak did a good job his first four years taking a failed expansion team to a non losing football team. I think Kubiak's second four years was ok, taking a non-losing team & making them a play off team. & so far, I think O'b is threading water.

Yeah, you'd think we'd be dominating somebody by now, but none of our games feel like dominance. However, once we get that dominating team, we'll dominate for a lot longer than some of these other teams have. At least I think we will.

Another five years of 9-7, I'll probably be griping too.

Welker as the Texans Receivers Coach??????????? I don't see this too much more realistic than AJ for that position...........neither has ever coached at the NFL level and being a great receiver does not necessarily automatically make for a good receivers coach............but, I guess anything is possible when you are desperate to correct a receiver corps that has consistently underperformed.

******************************************************************************************************************************
The Texans made some changes to their offensive coaching staff, and they may be looking at bringing in someone coach Bill O’Brien knows well.

According to Tom Pelissero of USA Today, former Patriots (and Chargers and Dolphins and Broncos and Rams) wide receiver Wes Welker is with the Texans coaching staff in Mobile watching Senior Bowl practices. He was with New England when O’Brien was there.

There has been no word of his hiring, but there’s certainly an opening for someone with Welker’s expertise.

When the Texans parted ways with offensive coordinator George Godsey (who worked with the team’s quarterbacks as well), they also shifted Sean Ryan from working with the team’s wide receivers to quarterbacks coach.

Welker has apparently explored coaching opportunities before, and working with a group which includes DeAndre Hopkins would be a pretty good place to start a second career. LINK

Well, can Welker (or anyone else for that matter) just go down and hang out around a coaching staff unless they have permission from that team? I mean, have they seen him taking notes or something? I'd kind of like to see something more definitive than "spotted with the Texans' coaching staff". Spotted doing what?

Hopefully not what he was doing at the Kentucky Derby!

Another dubious honor........

Fastest run of NFL season happened against Texans

By Aaron Wilson, Houston Chronicle

January 26, 2017
A former track standout, Kansas City Chiefs return specialist Tyreek Hill is one of the fastest players in the NFL.

Hill has run the 40-yard dash in a blistering 4.29 seconds.

He displayed that speed during a 105-yard kickoff return against the Texans during the second game of this season, but the touchdown was nullified due to a holding penalty on the Chiefs that prompted coach Andy Reid to accuse former Texans corner Charles James of flopping, which James flatly denied.

According to NFL data called "Next Gen Stats," Hill reached a top speed of 23.24 miles per hour during that kickoff return at NRG Stadium. It was the fastest run or return by any NFL player recorded this season.

Hill reached 22.7 miles per hour during an 86-yard touchdown return later in the season, the second-fastest return or run this season.

As for Reid's accusation of flopping while being blocked by Steve Nelson, James, who's since been released by the Texans, told the Chronicle: "I got blocked, in my back. So, you get blocked in your back and you fall. Nah man, this ain't basketball. It's kind of hard to flop in football."

Wasn't JDC clocked pretty dang fast when he was chasing down a long TD pass? I want to say it was in the 21-22 mph area.

Vince Wilfork still leaning toward retirement
January 28, 2017 Updated: January 28, 2017 12:38pm

Wilfork played in the NFL for 13 seasons, earning two Super Bowl and being named to five Pro Bowls.

Wilfork reiterated that he's strongly leaning toward retirement and expects to make that decision official within the next few weeks, barring an unexpected change of heart.

"I had a great, wonderful career," Wilfork said at the George R. Brown Convention Center. "I'm at a point now where I think I've played my last game. I'm happy with that, if that's the case."

Since the Texans' 36-17 defeat in an AFC divisional-round playoff game at the hands of the AFC champion New England Patriots, his former team, Wilfork hasn't changed his stance on stepping away from football. The 35-year-old former Patriots first-round draft pick from Miami doesn't expect to change his mind.

"I think I have, I think I have," Wilfork said when asked if he's played his last football game. "I've been away from the game about two weeks and the more and more I'm away from the game the more and more I'm starting to like life after football. It's not official yet, but I'm definitely leaning towards being retired.
"Probably in a couple more weeks I'll confirm it. It's hard to walk away from something that you really love. In watching the Super Bowl and coming here,I'm still eager. I want to play right now, but, at the same time, I really don't want to. It's not a decision I'm rushing to do. I'm going to take my time on it."

Wilfork has consulted with close friends and former teammates, including Randy Moss, Kevin Faulk and Mike Vrabel, about his decision. They all told him that he would recognize the feeling of when it's the right time to hang up his cleats.

He declined to give percentages on his chances of retiring, emphasizing he's an all-or-nothing type.

Regardless of the timing of his pending retirement announcement, Wilfork created a lasting legacy in several unique ways. He provided a stout anchor in the middle of the Texans and Patriots' defenses, helping the Texans achieve the top defensive ranking in the NFL this season.

In the locker room, Wilfork was a wise presence who gave sage advice to younger players who soaked up knowledge from him as they huddled around him and hung on his every word. In the community,

Wilfork and his wife, Bianca, were generous contributors all over the country.
Wilfork is a big man with an equally large heart.

"I left my soul on the field," Wilfork said. "I played with a passion. I had a lot of fun. I loved my teammates. I gave football my all. I never played football half-speed. Everything I had, they got. I don't think too much about my legacy.

"I just think about how it felt and what it meant for me to be a professional football player, the honor I felt for the career that I had. I played for two amazing organizations. It don't get no bigger than the NFL. The NFL is the one sport everybody dreams about. I had a dream that I lived out. That dream was actually a game we all dream about as little kids."

If Wilfork retires this year, he would be eligible for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in five years. It's not a goal the classic 3-4 nose tackle sought, but he would gladly accept that honor.

"I never played the game for that, I never thought about that," Wilfork said. "When I first heard somebody talking about that was my last year in New England you have a lot of kids that's young and they look at me as ancient. They grew up watching me play.

"I played the game because I loved it. I never looked at myself as the greatest of all time. I looked at myself as wanting to be great in the moment for my team for my city I always lived in the moment. I loved football. I had a passion for football. If it happens, it would be an honor. I consider myself a football player. I don't care about the accolades. the one accolade I care about is that Lombardi."

Wilfork carefully carried the championship trophy to the podium, walking slowly up the steps in what's likely his last act as an active NFL player.

The Friendswood resident acknowledged how painful it is that the Texans didn't reach the big game.

"I tell you what any time a Super Bowl comes to your hometown you want to be playing in it," Wilfork said. "As a Houston Texan, it sucks to not be playing in this game, but I think it's awesome for the city, for fans of football in Houston to have something like this.

"At the end of the day, we are America's sport. Everybody around the globe is going to be watching this game. It brings me back to the moment when I won it, the feeling, understanding what it is to be a Super Bowl champ."

what does "they don't fit together" actually mean??

They all have something in common, BUT.................

Sage Rosenfels interviewed by Braddock:

Jayson Braddock ‏@JaysonBraddock
23m23 minutes ago

"His footwork, his athletic ability & his accuracy, that excites me as much as anything. He really is the total package" Sage on Garoppolo

Sage on if 25th overall is too much for JG "I'm impressed by Garoppolo. Very early in his career I knew he was going to be a legitimate QB"

  1. "It's obvious the Texans are a win now football team. When you're in that position you can't just wait 2-3 years for the QB position"

  2. "If O'Brien had his way he probably would love to go get Jimmy Garoppolo and fit him right in this offense & he'll probably do very well"

  3. "I think some times he was probably frozen by too much responsibility" Sage Rosenfels on Brock Osweiler

"In O'Brien's offense it's totally QB driven. The quarterback has to do so much before the ball is even snapped & that can overwhelm QBs"

Sage Rosenfels on Brock w/ Kubiak vs OB's offense: "In Kubiak's offense they (QB) can operate without having to do everything"

Idk what other role besides Ambassador he could fill. Make it happen McNair. Bring our boy home and let him retire a Texan.

Andre Johnson Says Would Like To Help Texans, Not Coach Though
http://houston.cbslocal.com/2017/02...s-would-like-to-help-texans-not-coach-though/

“I would like to stay around the game, but I don’t want to coach,” Johnson said about working with the Texans now that his career is over.”Maybe once the guys get into OTAs going out, helping receivers out.”

...

Because Johnson is the greatest Texans player of all time there has been talk, now that his career is over talk of how to honor him at NRG stadium has started.

“It would mean a lot,” Johnson said of being honored by the Texans. “I couldn’t even imagine. That’s big to have your number retired by an organization. It would be a very special feeling.”

There has not been any word from Johnson or the Texans but it would be likely that the Texans honor him in some way this season.

I don't know that I would consider Sage an expert on good QB's or what one looks like, but he certainly is more of one than the posters here

I'm feeling guilty here.... Are you referring to me? Sage didn't say anything that refute what I've said about Garoppolo.

We may be priced out of the AJ Bouye market. I hope JJo (turns 33 in April) can hold up for one more year and we can groom a rookie this season.

patrick‏@PatDStat
ESPNs John Clayton mentioned to me that A.J. Bouye is looking at minimum $12-12.5 million APY on the open market. #Texans

This is what might be expected on the "open market". If he truly wants to stay with the Texans, I would hope for a home town discount, maybe in the $9-10 range? Although not making up all the difference, you have to factor in state and local taxes.

In my mind we'd just give him JJo money but he's "only" at $7M for this upcoming season. Well short of that $12M. I like Bouye but I don't know that I like him $12M worth...especially when our front 7 is forecasted to be the baddest MF'ers in the league next year. They should make a competent DB look much better than he is.

That's true and has already happened to some extent. If Bouye signs with a team with a poor pass rush, he's going to struggle quite a bit. Pass rush allows these corners to play aggressive on short stuff, which is where Bouye flourishes, and not worry about double moves as much. You take that away and everything changes for these corners.

Assuming Kevin Johnson comes back 100%, which CND says is expected, we already have our #1 corner and we haven't had to pay him his worth yet. We don't need to pay someone $12M to be our #2 corner. I say let JJo play that role this year and draft someone who we can develop into that role for future seasons. There are 3 vet corners on this team that can help him along the way.

Rick Smith on Texans' A.J. Bouye: 'You can't have too many corners'
February 2, 2017

The Texans' budget at a premium position could soon be tipping the scales.

Like most franchises, the Texans' reaction to this being a passing league is to load up at the cornerback position.

In their case, they have a potential surplus at corner with Johnathan Joseph, Kareem Jackson and Kevin Johnson all under contract for next season. Jackson is due a $6.5 million base salary with a $8.968 million salary-cap figure. Joseph is due a $6 million base salary and carries a $6.096 million salary-cap figure. And Johnson is entering the third year of his $10.09 million rookie contract.

Despite the amount of money the Texans already have invested in corners, they want to retain Bouye following a breakthrough season in which he intercepted two passes in the playoffs and led the top-ranked defense with 16 passes defended. Bouye has emerged as a rising commodity in NFL circles and is expected to command a lucrative contract regardless of whether he's back with the Texans or leaves as a free agent.

"I certainly couldn't be any more proud of any of our players than I am of A.J. with the way he improved his play and his confidence," Texans general manager Rick Smith said Thursday during an NFL legacy grant event at The Pro-Vision Academy. "I think he had an outstanding year. I've said many, many times you can't have too many corners. We've talked about that a lot.
"I think he's a fine young man. He fits our profile and we certainly would like to have him back and we're going to do everything we can to get that done."

The Texans also have interest in signing Pro Bowl alternate wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins to a contract extension. They have him under contract for next season under a fifth-year, $7.915 million club option they picked up last year.

"I think both of those guys are good football players," Smith said of Hopkins and Bouye. "Obviously, they're two different situations and scenarios. I think if you look at our football team you see we spend a lot of time and effort in the draft. When we've got good, young football players, we do our best to extend those guys and keep them a part of our core football team."

******************************************************************************************************************

Now that we have so many needs and relatively little money, let's see how genius our GM is. Maybe he and McNair can convince Reed to come out of retirement on the cheap, convert him to a CB, and promise him a gold-plated cane to help him around the field as to not leave him helpless like the last time around...................

What I've seen is that they make decisions that aren't based in any kind of pattern. This statement is almost laughable. They've refused to sign stud guys and they've re-signed **** players. They don't follow any pattern in regards to total make up of the team. So, no, I don't trust Rick's decision making on this. My gut says they'll pay Bouye a ton of money and he'll come back next year and get abused, because he has significant deficiencies in his game.

Then we'll be talking about Bouye like we talk about Newton, waiting until it's financially feasible to cut him.

now today is kinda the time were it hits U ...... this feeling of well this really sucks The Texans are not playing in the Superbowl at home seeing the pats here at Uof H and all the hoopla in the city all the pats fans and banners and what not

It could of been special if the texans at least made it to the Super bowl ......... : (

Report: Patriots tried to trade Jamie Collins for DeAndre Hopkins
Jack Browne Feb 5, 2017 10:45 AM
The Patriots sending Jamie Collins to the Cleveland Browns was the biggest blockbuster trade during the season, but New England reportedly tried to pull off an even bigger deal involving the linebacker.

New England tried to trade Collins to the Texans in exchange for star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins before ultimately opting to send him to Cleveland after being rebuffed by Houston, sources told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

The idea was to swap two stars players who both would soon need big-money extensions.

The Patriots also attempted to acquire Texans cornerback Johnathan Joseph.

More to come.

The New England Patriots attempted to trade Jamie Collins to the Houston Texans.

In a report from NFL.com (Read Here), the New England Patriots came knocking on the Houston Texans door trying to trade them linebacker Jamie Collins before sending him to the Cleveland Browns. The reported offers saw the Patriots try to pry DeAndre Hopkins from the Texans after a slow start to the season but that was shot down in a hurry. The Texans also shot down an offer for cornerback Johnathan Joseph after the initial Hopkins offer that went no where.

Call it positional value but the Texans made the right choices on turning down the Patriots offer for Collins and the deal to the Browns went down in late October. At that time, the Texans were 5-3 heading into their bye week after coming off a strong win against the Detroit Lions.

The bigger issue was the Texans, if they did complete a trade for Collins, would have required a new deal. While Hopkins and Joseph are both under contract for reasonable deals heading into the 2017, Collins ended up with a 4-year, $50-milion extension with Browns who was entering his final season of his rookie deal.

but... but... Rick smith sucks.
:D

Why would the Texans do that deal? Rick Smith doesn't get any credit from me for not executing that trade. You don't get a pat on the back for not screwing up at your job, do you?

Well... it's nice to hear the Patriots are interested in some of our players.

I'd be peeved if I were DeAndre Hopkins. Could be playing in the Super Bowl today.
