Texans random thought of the day

It's Ok to run it sometimes. But when you run it too often, you are limiting your play options. That's why it was used with Savage.......it consolidated/limited the plays he needed to know how to run.

Except if those are the plays that are working, I don't care if the playbook has 3 plays in it. You use what works until somebody can stop it.

Texans added punter cory carter to reserved/future contract today per their facebook page
He is a place kicker, not only a punter (he attended Teexans minicamp earlier this year)..............the signing doesn't surprise me at all. As I've previously posted, an abdominal oblique muscle injury is an injury that can't help but affect the performance of a kicker. Novak missing the PAT and then a FG that he would usually make, on review of the film showed him twisting his whole body to put himself into the kick and compensate loss of power, potentially further stressing the obliques. His last few kickoffs have been even shorter than usual. I see Carter as potentially being used on kickoffs to save Novak's abds. Carter showed some ability for strong kickoffs in college.

Just to keep things in perspective on All-Pro recognition,

Quintin Demps got the same number of votes as both Mercilus and McKinney, 1.

So basically a Texans witer/broadcaster/supporter voted them all the same while two other folks voted Clowney (with 3 votes) as well.

Meanwhile Harrison Smith, Minnesota's stud safety, didn't get a single vote.

Someone should explain how this works to the beat writers in Minnesota.

I just came across this. A shame that his son has taken this route.

Vince Wilfork's 19-year-old son was arrested last week after cops say he was in possession of a BUNCH of codeine -- and he now faces up to 20 YEARS in prison ... TMZ Sports has learned.

D'Aundre Holmes-Wilfork -- a safety at the University of Houston -- was in a 2011 Kia that was pulled over for a routine traffic stop in Friendswood, Texas around midnight on Dec. 21st.

According to the police report, cops found 381 grams of codeine -- and arrested D'Aundre on the spot for possession of substance in penalty group 4 ... which is a felony.

If convicted, D'Aundre faces 2 to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Wilfork was released from the UofH football team the next day.

I've seen that, but didn't want to mention it.

Figure Vince would want to keep it low key.

I understand he probably wants to take the time out to help his son.

Wilfork is very fortunate, if you can even say that........because more than 200 grams and less than 400 grams is considered "only" a Group 4 2nd degree felony in Tx. If he were caught with only 20 more grams..........his life would be essentially over since possession of more than 400 grams is a Group 4 1st degree felony and carries a sentence of life imprisonment or a term of 5 to 99 years and up to a $50,000 fine.

My thought are with Vince, hoping that he can help turn his son around.

I got back from the game and while watching it, it seems if a person wanted to, they could easily read Godsey's lips when he sends in the play. No way the Pats don't leverage that. Am I missing something, he needs to get his menu card higher

I pointed out in the game thread that Crennel throughout the game was shown on TV with his menu never covering his mouth............easy for anyone trying to read his lips.

With Romeo, I would even give credit for misdirection, we are playing another level there. With the offense, the other team and most of the regular fans have a feel for what is coming so when I saw this I just thought maybe another reason the "O" sucks. Anyway, BOB talks about self scouting, here is one area maybe to think about

Godsey doesn't cover his mouth, it's another indication of how horrible and predicable this offense is. Crennel doesn't cover his mouth, and it is brilliant misdirection by a genius. Christ, I want Godsey fired like everyone else, but we are taking these things to the point of ridiculousness.

What's going to happen when we make it to the Super Bowl this year? Do we get home field or how is that decided? Would we use the visitors locker room or just change the sign outside of ours?

It's crap like this from the Texans local hype media that I hate. #1 Miller had a sad performance. #2 his ankle re-injury was a significant factor.

Texans ride Lamar Miller in return from ankle injury

HOUSTON -- When Houston Texans offensive coordinator George Godsey was asked what it would mean to have running back Lamar Miller return to the lineup, he talked about how productive Miller has been all season.

And then he laughed, saying, the Texans would probably “give him the ball a few times.”

Godsey wasn’t joking. In Saturday’s 27-14 victory over the Oakland Raiders in a wild-card playoff game, Miller ran the ball 31 times.
Miller finished with 73 yards and a touchdown, but the fifth-year back averaged only 2.4 yards per carry. It was his first game since he injured his ankle at the end of Houston’s victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 15. Miller said earlier in the week that his legs felt fresh after sitting out two weeks and that he felt like it was Week 1 again.

Including Miller’s 73 yards, the Texans ran for 123 yards, a week after running for just 46 in Tennessee.

“We rushed for over 120 yards, which is good,” Texans head coach Bill O’Brien said. “I think anytime we do that, we have a chance to win in addition to taking care of the ball. So I thought that everybody on offense did a nice job [Saturday].

Miller’s 4-yard touchdown run came in the first quarter, a play after Jadeveon Clowney’s interception set the Texans up deep inside the red zone. Miller ran in untouched and said once he saw the Raiders were in man, he knew he could use his speed to get to the outside.

Miller said he “felt good” after the game and he said it was exciting to get his first career playoff game under his belt. Still, Miller and the rest of the Texans are aware that there’s still more to improve on before they go to New England to play the Patriots in the divisional round. Houston already has lost to the Patriots on the road this season, falling 27-0 on Monday Night Football in Week 3.

“It feels good just to get a win in the playoffs,” Miller said. “Having the opportunity to play next week is always great. I think on the offensive side of the ball, I think we did a great job once we got in the red zone to get touchdowns. Our main focus for this week is once we get in the red zone, we have to get touchdowns instead of field goals.”

AFC/NFC alternate home designation for the SB. This year the NFC is the 'home team'. I believe I've read (can't find the article now) that an actual home occupant of a SB stadium would be allowed to use their own locker room, but they'd have to flip sides of the field for the actual designation. We'd lose uniform preference to the NFC as well.

Official study forecasts Super Bowl will infuse $350 million into Houston economy

Analysis is in line with previous outside estimates
By Lydia DePillis

January 9, 2017

With less than a month to go before the big day, let no one say that Super Bowl LI — as an economic event, not a football game — has been inadequately forecast.

We've already seen two studies on the financial boost that the two-week extravaganza is expected to provide to the Houston area: One from a consulting firm hired to figure out how much hospitality tax revenue the state should provide in advance, and another from a local bank. They ranged pretty widely in their predictions and definitions, making it difficult to know what benefits to expect.

Now comes another study from the Host Committee, this one designed to capture the new money that will flow to Houston as a result of the game and all the programming around it. The headline: The city will net $350 million from the whole affair, which appears to be in the middle of the range of windfalls from Super Bowls past.

Aware of the skepticism surrounding previous in-house analyses, the consulting firm that performed it — Pennsylvania-based Rockport Analytics — emphasizes that it doesn't count anything that shouldn't be counted. "One of the reasons why we tend to be hired by events like this is that we produce conservative estimates," says managing director Kenneth McGill.
As such, the firm took the overall expected amount of Super Bowl spending — based on a budget provided by the Host Committee and data from past Super Bowls — and subtracted out both the typical amount of tourism the city sees during this time of year and the spending that's likely to leak out to other states and cities. It included the amount the city would be spending on the event, about $5.5 million, as a net gain; city officials have said the Host Committee will reimburse all of those costs.

That got them down from from $450 million to the ultimate $350 million, which is slightly more than the $338 million that Rockport is forecasting for next year's Super Bowl in Minneapolis — a number that has already come under fire from independent sports finance experts — and the $277.9 million it determined that Indianapolis reaped from hosting the event in 2012.

It also looks a lot higher than the typical estimates calculated by the consulting firm PriceWaterHouseCoopers, which usually forecasts a direct spending impact of about $200 million right before the game. However, PwC's estimates do not include the money that gets paid out to vendors and workers who are hired by businesses contracted directly to provide services during the Super Bowl, which is known as "indirect" and "induced" spending. McGill estimates that direct spending in Houston will be $203 million, in line with PwC's previous determinations.

It's easy to let those distinctions cloud comparisons across years and between data crunchers. Last year, right before Super Bowl L (that's 50 for non-Latin speakers) in the San Francisco Bay area, Rockport guesstimated — without doing a full analysis — that the event would bring in $350 million for local communities. The official post-game analysis, done by another firm, found the actual amount was closer to $240 million.

Although such estimates usually include indirect and induced spending, it's not clear whether that was done in this case. (The author, Patrick Risch of SportsImpacts, has not responded to a request for clarification).

When all is said and done, there will be yet another economic impact study. And and only a little more certainty about what was actually spent.

Good.............now give it back to the Harris County tax payers.

What are we going to do about AJ Bouye's free agent status? Do we pay him what he'll get on the open market even though we've still got Jo Jo and the KJs?

Hopefully he shows just how much of a shutdown corner he is and helps us win a Super Bowl while he's here :)

I'm going to throw this out there knowing there's ridicule to come: I can picture Brock being a big game qb -- the type of guy you feel good about going into the big game. I'm not talking about read progression/slow release/footwork or any fundamentals -- I'm talking about gravitas. He's been through a hell storm of negativity and somehow he keeps getting off of the mat w/ his chin up. If he steps up to the plate and we make a game out of this, I think a substantial building block will be laid -- we pick up where we left off beginning of next year and could be on the map. I probably should have waited to post this closer to the game so I could still delete the post, but I'm ballsy like that.

To me, you have to restructure or release JoJo ($7M next year, no dead money). He's been good for us but he's clearly slowing down. Bouye is his replacement IMO.

Pete Morreli will be the referee for Saturday's game.

Man, EVERYONE, EVERYONE is laughing this game off as a blowout! I really hope some of the guys hear this crap and use it to their advantage. I really want the Texans to win this game, really want them to win.

You must be watching a different Joseph than I. First, he can be cut at any time, OTC has him at $500k dead $ but that is piddling. He has 45 regular season tackle + 10 VS Raiders. 9 passes defended in 13 games. He still takes the opponent's #1 WR usually. I've been Bouye fan from beginning and he is great not just good; but as we have seen, we usually have injuries at this important position (2nd year Kevin Johnson foot surgery). We have four that can start KJackson, Joseph, Bouye and a healthy Jackson. I see Robert Nelson as a successor to the 4th CB in 2018.

2017 NFL projected salary cap (your source Spotrac) is $168 million + nearly $5 m in rollover from 2016: $25 million cap space with 53 signed . That does not include possible cuts like Newton and Bergstrom. I think Texans are very well positioned for future years.

We got an email that our office received the ok to wear Texans gear today.

I replied "Can you get us approval to wear all black next week?"
