The Las Vegas Raiders

I think it would be an issue now, so no I don't want Vegas getting a team. I didn't want L.A getting a team either.

What, in your opinion, would be an issue today versus the fact that guys have access to gambling essentially year round regardless of locale and that Vegas today isn't quite the Vegas of old? And this isn't a 'gotcha' or 'wtf, bro' kind of questioning, I just honestly may be blanking out on why Vegas pro sports would be the kind of a trap it was once considered as opposed to this day and age of internet access/superwealthy athlete/muted mob ties, and so on.

I used to think this way as well. Your thoughts are valid for the most part, but having that team there could cause players to be targeted more and easier. If I'm not mistaken didn't they have a huge gambling scandal that brought the UNLV rebel basketball team down where they never recovered? They were a lot of fun back in the day. There are a lot of sports cities that could support a team. I just don't think it's worth the potential risk especially after I've seen so much corruption from Goodell on all types of things. We've seen so many scandals in the NFL, MLB, and the NBA. The NBA covered up that huge cheating scandal somehow with Donahuey years ago, and no one even got fired or even in trouble when it changed the course of history in who won championships. I see sports getting more and more corrupt with more money added personally.

UNLV gambling scandal 25 years ago though? Amongst college kids that are much easier prey than wealthy pro athletes?

Gotta be honest, man, I'm just not seeing the special risk that Vegas threatens to bring today. No worries on agreeing to disagree though.

Them big time gamblers might get to the ball handlers and have them deflate balls or something... :kitten:

I understand your arguments and not that long ago I felt the same way.

I do think you underestimate the stupidity of pro athletes especially in the NFL though. Look at some of these guys and the stuff they do at times.

*Plexico Burress bringing a loaded gun into a night club and it going off.
*That Cowboys player that got popped for multiple kilos of cocaine TWICE even after his hearing was pending when he was already rich (Sam Hurd right?)
*Aaron Hernandez murdering someone over practically nothing.
*Vick's dog fighting ranch.
*Darren Sharper's multiple victims of date rape when he could have had whatever woman he wanted

I could go on and on man. I don't think that it would be that hard to find guys dumb enough to take bribes at all considering the stuff we see pretty much on a yearly basis. The threat doesn't just involve the players. The officials are the biggest threat if you ask me. They aren't paid like that, and they've already done it in the NBA.

I like Vegas, and it would be cool for them to get a team, but I don't want to have any extra % chance for a scandal like that. I think places like SA would be a much better team for the Raiders as well if Jerry would ever stop meddling.

Or maybe Goodell and company would create suspensions and punishments with no evidence of gambling as well. :kitten:

Maybe an accusation would come out, and an automatic suspension comes without any real investigation or a double jeopardy punishment (Rice, Peterson)

After reconsidering, I no longer support the Raiders moving to Las Vegas.

"Public funding would come from an increase in a Las Vegas-area hotel room tax and potentially from a special taxation district around the stadium."

Las Vegas is already too expensive.

"There's been a lot of conversation on why are we giving money to billionaires," said Steve Hill, chairman of the oversight committee and head of the Nevada Governor's Office of Economic Development. "The public is not making a contribution to a privately owned stadium."

His last statement is semi-false though. Where there is public funding they own the stadium and the team leases. Nobody just gives the team a stadium.

So the tourists who are already spending tons of cash in their town will fund the stadium? Lol!

Actually not a bad plan if they could pull that off.

That's the basis of NRG and basically every other publicly funded stadium. Hardly a 1st. In fact routine.

This is a ploy to get a new stadium from the city of Oakland. Once it fails then they will start getting serious about a move.

The gambling issue is archaic in regards to teams in legal locales. Once upon a time it was legit since gambling was mostly done only when in legal gambling areas, and having a team in that legal locale could spawn relationships with points fixers. However, with gambling prevalent via the Internet and relationships driven via digital means, the issue no longer carries the risk it once did. Risk is everywhere now.

Yeah, I've stayed in hotels in Houston and if you look at the bill at check-out, you will notice a charge for a sports stadium fee or whatever its called. It might be $20-$30 of the bill depending on where you stay.

But in Vegas, they have resort fees tacked on and other things, the last thing I want to see in Vegas is another bill.

It's getting closer and closer with the $750 million in state funds being approved for a stadium.

Who remembers when Bob Kraft threatened to move the Patriots to CT?
I do and Massachusetts relented and gave them what is now Gillette
stadium in Foxboro, I am not sure this case is exactly that! But I feel
Californians feel with the Chargers, Niners and Rams all residing in
state it could stand to lose 1 and there might not be as much "fight"
to work out a deal where the Raiders can continue to bare the name
Oakland

so I would not be surprised if the Raiders got the vote to move
and begin play by 2020 in Vegas

I think Kraft's main hurdle back then was location. Where to put the stadium. Hartford, Boston, Providence and Foxboro were all in play at one point or another. But I believe in the end the total cost of Gillette Stadium was paid for by Kraft.

Kraft's "issue" was he was using those other locations as a bargaining chip to try and strong arm
Massachuesetts into building him a stadium and ultimately he won

Sooooo what will they do with this thing during the summer? How soon will 10 Raiders home games/season give the Nevada tax payers a return on investment?

I have to wonder if this merely a ploy for the Davis clan to get a new stadium in Oakland?

But Kraft paid for Gillette Stadium himself.
On April 18, 2000, the team revealed plans for the new stadium in Foxborough.[30] It was announced as a 68,000-seat stadium at a cost of $325 million, with the entire cost privately funded. Boston is thus the only city in professional sports in which all facilities are privately owned and operated. The Patriots own Gillette Stadium, the Red Sox own Fenway Park, and TD Garden is owned by Delaware North (the owner of the Bruins) (the Celtics rent the TD Garden from Delaware North).
