Ranking under-25 talent of all 32 NFL teams

2. HOUSTON TEXANS
2015 ranking: 16

Similar to Jacksonville, you have an elite defensive talent in Houston waiting to break out (Jadeveon Clowney), and basically the whole receiving corps on display. Injuries have limited Clowney's impact, but he did contribute 18.5 hurries last season. Benardrick McKinney has locked up an inside linebacker job after 35 stops (plays that prevent a successful gain) last year. Andre Hal took over at safety for Rahim Moore in 2015 and hasn't looked back. Cornerback Kevin Johnson had a solid rookie season, finishing 23rd in adjusted success rate and 28th in adjusted yards per pass allowed.

Wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, who is still only 24 years old, proved last season that he could produce with a mediocre quarterback play. His prospects should improve with Brock Osweiler now throwing the ball to him. Hopkins should also have more help this year after the Texans spent first- and third-round picks on Will Fuller and Braxton Miller, respectively. Jaelen Strong only seemed to show up against the Colts last year, but he's another option for Osweiler. Overall, there's more speed and versatility in this year's receiving corps. Houston does not use its tight end much, but C.J. Fiedorowicz is first on the depth chart.

Houston also drafted Notre Dame center Nick Martin in the second round, and he does not face much competition to win that job immediately this year.

Is offensive play calling still a concern next season as much as last season. Our was that overblown because of Mallet and Hoyer?

That's a good question.

Hopefully we'll see that game plan offense, & we'll see what O'b is made of.

and last I heard Kyle Long was in a walking boot.
Happened the first day of TC. The boot's off and he practiced "limited" since Wednesday. As calf strains are high risk for recurrence, his ability to stay on the field in TC when he is released to full practice and game play is to be seen.

Atleast Long has plenty of time to heal.

Will our offense move too fast not to give our defense enough of a rest? I liked Kubiaks drives that lasted several minutes when they scored 7. With all the new speedsters added and a QB not in Tier 4 I am wondering how that is going to shake out.

I will take fast touchdowns every time over slow ones. We will be so far ahead by half time, our back ups defense can play 4th quarter.

Agreed. Pushing the score up puts a lot of pressure on opposing offenses. Takes the running game out of the picture for a lot of coaches & QBs with itchy trigger fingers.

Either way, slow drives, quick drives... dont really matter if you dont score.

Yeah I think it also takes wind out of opponent quickly and they start making boo boos like jumping off side, holding, personal fouls, etc. There can be no "well we fought all the way and they had to earn the score". Instead it will be "dang..who was supposed to guard that blur (any of our speedsters)".

Preview of our squad:
Previewing the 2016 Houston Texans
http://footballyards.com/nfl-news/previewing-the-2016-houston-texans/

Where They’re Coming From
Continuing to lose to everyone except Cincinnati in the playoffs.

No division had fewer wins in 2015 than the AFC South (25); yet, someone had to be awarded a spot in the playoffs.

That team was the Houston Texans, and they got dominated by the Kansas City Chiefs (30-0) in every way imaginable during their Wild Card matchup. The loss drops the franchise’s playoff record to 2-3; the only two wins came against the Bengals.

The Texans were held back by their offense, which was led by Brian Hoyer, Ryan Mallett, T.J. Yates, and even Brandon Weeden at varying times last year. The Houston brass believes they’ll receive much better QB play in 2016.

Where They’re Going
As far as a quarterback who’s only started seven games in four seasons will take them.

The Texans were finally so fed up with the poor quarterback play that has plagued them over the last few seasons that they made push for Peyton Manning’s heir apparent, Brock Osweiler. Houston gave the former Bronco a four-year contract worth $72-million, with just over half of it guaranteed.

That’s a good chunk of change for a guy who has so few starts in the NFL, and was benched for a 60-year-old dude wearing a Peyton Manning jersey.

I get it though. The presence of a franchise quarterback can mask so many flaws, and Osweiler has the potential to be that.

...

Where They’ll End Up
Needing to win three of their last four for a shot at the playoffs.

Thanks to winning the division last year, the Texans draw the Patriots and Bengals on top of the AFC West and NFC North in 2016. It certainly won’t be a walk in the park for Osweiler in his first season as a starting quarterback.

As long as Osweiler doesn’t turn out to be a complete bust, Houston should control its own destiny entering Week 14. To close the season, they’ll travel to Indy, host the Jaguars and Bengals, and then finish up at Tennessee. The games against the Colts and Jaguars will be crucial.

The #Texans will play this season on synthetic turf.

From that same PDS account I read a write up of the Texans D-line (The Red Flag is Raising With the Houston Texans Defensive Line Situation) that I thought might interest some. https://t.co/720ZUqCDtp

Some interesting things from the article:

--They say Still is not doing very well and they expected more from him.

--Pagan has been having problems with injuries and can't stay on the field.

--Dunn has conditioning problems.

The article doesn't paint a pretty picture of the D-line and they imply that they will need to pick up more D-linemen before the season starts.

In DJ Reader we trust.

Except for his conditioning issues....

What conditioning issues?

Post game quotes from OB, called DJ out on his conditioning.

“D.J. has to pay attention to his conditioning level…” Bill O'Brien on D.J. Reader

Putting it down as normal fat guy trying to get into playing shape issues.

The Texans have picked up a vet DE Alex Carrington. His season ended last year with a left quad tendon tear/surgery. Looking back to 2013, Carrington also required surgery to repair a left quad tendon tear. Probably a clue that Watt will not be starting the beginning of the season, and certainly not expected to perform well any time soon.

So now we have 2 players coming off of quad tendon rupture surgery. Carrington 1 1/2 months before Brown.

2013 Carrington was givenIn Carrington, last year before his 2nd quad injury, was rated at -6.2 by PFF. Since 2012, he has only played in 18 games and started 4 of those games........only 1 in the last 2 years. Interestingly enough, although he was drafted to be a strong pass rusher, he has had no sacks since 2012. I don't know how long he lasts as a Texan. Quad tendon tears can do a number on big linemen.
