What Will 49ers Do Now?

Insideop

All Pro
With the hiring of Chip Kelly will the 49ers draft a QB in the 1st or stay with Kaepernick? My hope is Chip will think he can resurrect Kaepernick's career and not draft a QB in the 1st. This would benefit the Texans and may give them more options when they pick at #22.

I think the bigger question is what will the Eagles do? Will they give up on Bradford and not resign him, or will their new HC think he can get something out of him? Without Bradford the only QB under contract for Philly is Sanchez, so they will most definitely be looking for a QB if that doesnt change

Yes, they're also a "wildcard" when it comes to picking a QB. The way I see it now is that there are 6 teams (Browns, "Cowpies," 49ers, Eagles, Rams, and Jets) that may want to draft a QB in the 1st round and they are all drafting before the Texans. The more these questions get answered the better the chances are of the Texans still having a shot at a good QB prospect at #22. If not, then they may have to trade up to get who they want and that can be costly.

It's almost a sure bet that the Browns and Rams are taking a QB in the 1st round. For the "Cowpies" and 49ers it's probably less than a 50% chance they draft a QB in the 1st now that Chip has been hired by the 49ers and Jerrah will probably go after Manziel or RG3 in the off season. As for the Eagles and Jets, I just don't know. Best case scenario would be the Jets think they can wait until the 2nd round if only the Browns and Rams take a QB in the 1st. Worse case would be if the "Cowpies" take a QB and it starts a bidding war where the teams that want a QB start trying to move up, especially if it's for Wentz. The Texans would probably lose this since they are at #22 and would most certainly have to offer multiple picks from this and next years drafts to get ahead of the 49ers who pick #7.

I think you raise an interesting point Insideop...

The 49ers are definitely a super wild card now IMO.

Chip Kelly is a moron, but there's a lot in play here.

1. Everyone always talked about Mariota being Chip's guy and prototypical QB. Everyone had the Eagles selling the kitchen sink to move up and draft him. Now Chip is fired and there is a HC vacancy for the Titans and it appears to me from the outside he completely passed up on it to go to 49ers.

2. 49ers have 2 very athletic QBs under contract in 2016 that both seem to fit the mold, IMO, of an athletic 1 read and run QB who fails to go through progressions. I know that people don't think Gabbert is athletic, but he's actually one of the more athletic QBs in the league right now. Big problem with him is he crumbles under pressure. Not sure if that's better or worse than Kaep who fumbles or throws a pick trying to fight through pressure.

3. Carson Wentz is coming out. He's getting some pretty great hype and he also (IMO) fits the mold of one of these 1 read and run athletic QBs as well. Chip Kelly is a moron, so it wouldn't shock me if he got 3 QBs that fit his presumed "mold" and made them battle it out, but who knows.

I think that the 49ers pass on QB honestly, but there are so many other wild cards out there. At the end of the day I think the Texans will be the 4th team to draft a QB in the first round. Not sure how this happens, because there are so many unknown variables right now, but just what I think. I can def be wrong though.

I think the dysfunctional 49ers owner and GM have their minds made up to move on from Kaepernick. Kelly likely had to sign off on that in order to get the job.

I'm not really sure why everyone assumes Chip wants athletic QBs just because that's what he had in college.

His track record in the NFL so far suggests that he cares very little about mobility.

That'd be the first smart thing they've done in a while.

Although, sometimes it's possible to reach the right decision for the wrong reasons.

Dysfunctional is right.

I didn't assume that. I said "presumed mold" then brought up he avoided Mariota.

And yes, he has worked with Foles who is anti that mold and brought in Bradford who is also anti that mold as well.

I hear what you are saying though, we will see what happens.

I didn't mean you specifically. I'm seeing this everywhere. They're even talking about it on ESPN and NFL Network like it's a fact that he only wants mobile QBs. Yet, the QBs he's brought in are not that type at all.

To me, he appears to value three things: prototypical size, arm strength, and accuracy.

His system doesn't require mobility from the QB.

We Will all find out by April 1st, if he is not cut by then than they are on the hook for $16 mil regardless of they cutting him or not

Guess it proves it pays to be a "moron" :specnatz:

just to clarify $16 million is his cap hit and his base (2016) is $ 11.9 with a roster bonus of $2 million. He has already received his guarantee of $13 m with his 2014 base $645,000 + $12.974 signing bonus. His only other guarantee is for injury. If he goes, $7.4 dead money and savings on cap $8.5 m pre June 1st. He is "owed" nothing for 2016.

your numbers seem right, the contract notes:

2016 salary fully guarantees on 4/1/16

I think you can't look to deep into what Chip Kelly says, and the reason I say this is I believe he may be borderline retardation.

I'm still holding out hope that Kap is the vet we somehow bring in. Still believe with the right coaching and right situation he can regain his performance level when he was at his best.

This is just my opinion, it's worth exactly what you paid for it. I'm thinking the 49rs will keep Kaepernick and NOT draft a QB in 2016 since he still has alot of guaranteed money coming to him and I doubt there will be any trade partners willing to take on that salary on an iffy QB. I also think that he's the type of QB that Kelly will want for his read option system. The 49rs will most likely keep him, see if he works out in Kelly's system while at the same time paying down on that guaranteed money, and then re-evaluate at the end of the season.

It's only guaranteed if he's a 49er after April 1.

His salary would be $11.9M according to sportrac For the 49ers, it would be a $16M cap hit because of the pro rated bonus ($2.4M), a roster bonus ($1.25M), & a work out bonus ($0.4M). Whatever team he is traded to would not be responsible for the pro rated bonus. I don't think they'd have to pay for the roster bonus either (could be wrong). But I believe the team he is traded to will have to pay $11.9M salary & the work out bonus $0.4M, a cap hit of $12.3M

& this is where it gets funny. Funny because a fan would say, "I wouldn't pay $12.3M for him, no way." But NFL reality... I don't doubt there is someone out there that will give RG3 $10M/yr if he were to become a FA. & if they're going to give RG3 $10M/yr, Kaepernick can sure as heck get $12.3M/yr

Kelly already has a history of releasing high paid, seeking more money pro athletes. Of course this time he has no input on personnel, reportedly, so anyone's guess?

I do hope he gives Kap the chance to showcase his skills in Chip system & pass on drafting a QB early. Maybe take a shot on former Duck, Vernon Adams. My biggest concern with Vernon, the way he exposes his body (undersized) to contact, otherwise he could be the next Russell Wilson.

Kelly did give Vick the first shot at QB before handing the job to Foles (whom he inherited). The Sanchez and Bradford signings? Other than being high draft picks, I don't know what they have in common. Like O'Brien's QB picks, I can't tell what Kelly is looking for.
