"Mallett Will Be Starting QB vs Colts"... Opinions??

Phoenix

Waterboy
My source says Mallett strained / aggravated his pectoral muscle last week (the one he had surgery on last season)...which is why he missed a practice day last week. Obrien agreed to let him try to play thru it....this is why a number of his passes dropped short into turf....They're doing daily treatment on it and think the muscle is responding & will be much better by Colts game....This is why Obrien is not benching him....He knows Mallett was trying to play thru the pain & doesn't feel he should bench him over a temporary (hopefully) injury....However, if for any reason the muscle is not 100% by Colts game day Obrien could/would hold Mallett out & start Hoyer.

My opinion is that I was wrong thinking Mallet could be a good NFL quarter back. Just as I was wrong that Bill O'Brien could be a good NFL head coach.

I have proven to be quite suspect at talent evaluation. I'm glad I didn't quit my day job as a piano player in a whore house...

Riiiiight, allow a team to jump out 40 points going with a guy you know is injured, sure that makes a lot of sense.

LOL!!

I've lowered my expectations. Instead of thinking Mallett can be good Schaub, I'm hoping he can be Andy Dalton.

In before the negative nancies start crying for you to stop making excuses for the worst qb to ever play in the nfl.

The coach is as embarrassing as the team. Mallett is a loss. The team is a joke, just as O'Brien said on HK. Was then, is now.

Please clean house. Keys are under doormat, with team.

Have you seen Andy Dalton play lately? He's tearing it up. Kinda says something about Washington's head coach that he couldn't get this much out of Dalton and now what's going on with the qb situation in Washington don't you think?

Throwing in the towel. Already ?

In all seriousness, OB had to do this. Moving back to Hoyer would make him lose all credibility and at this point he needs to salvage whatever he has left.

Winning will cure everything.

If Mallett can turn into Andy Dalton I will take that in a heartbeat. Atleast he doesn't throw the ball into the ground several times a game.

I just remember teasing Bengal fans about Andy Dalton. I remember looking at the Bengals on the schedule, thinking, "Who's their QB? oh yeah, Dalton." & jotting a mark on the win column for us.

But hey, if you think he's playing better now than he did his first three or four years in the league... go figure.

Yea its unreal to think a QB needs time to develop into something. Not directed at you.

But I personal wouldn't want Dalton, only someone with his talents. Dalton is a ginger, and you never trust a ginger.

Question:

How does Mallett keep injuring his pectoral muscle?

A) Trainers
B) He is an idiot to do it twice
C) Random bad luck
D) All of the above

The idea of Mallett playing with an injured pectoral is plausible, but if it were true, it's not going to be improved enough to play within four days. And long term, how can he be a reliable solution with an easily recurring injury?

If has suffered a "strained/aggravated" pectoralis MUSCLE, this is not the same injury as last year.......a pectoralis muscle TENDON injury/rupture.......the former having a much shorter and better prognosis (non surgical). But either usually result in high throws like we saw last year...........UNLESS Mallet is trying to overcompensate to find that happy medium.

Edit: I went back just now to review his throwing motions in the Falcons game. It definitely looks like he was using a lower take off point (extending the arm fully causes the muscle to stretch and cause a great deal of pain)........having his upper arm more parallel to the ground and therefor using his greatest force generated at the elbow with little force generated at the shoulder. Arm more parallel to the ground + forearm going forward and down = short downward projection.

I really don't care about who started the first game or this game or that game at this point.

We've seen enough of Mallet now for three straight games, and we know what we've got with him. It's a terrible product at the end of the day. His accuracy is really bad, and even when his throws aren't completely off the mark, they're thrown so hard that they are hard to catch. Great passers know when to fire bullets and when to put on a nice touch. He doesn't see the field well, and he panics quickly and goes to the check down way to much. Starting Mallet again to me is just asking for another loss.

I'd like to see more of Hoyer again. Hoyer played bad his first game and got pulled early. Mallet has had his chance, and he has failed miserably. If Savage was healthy I'd like to see what he has, even though I have no faith in what he can do. He deserves his chance next since the other two have played poorly. For now, I'd like to see Hoyer over Mallet and I don't want to see Mallet anymore. He got his chance and he blew it.

At some point we have to ride out with someone, might as well be Mallett....

I hear ya Amazing80, but I don't want it to be Mallet. We couldn't even get a FG with him against ATL. Not exactly a scary defense. Hoyer got three scores and I know it was garbage time, but Mallet has been awful for three straight games. I'd rather go out and find Case Keenum and see if he is available at this point over Mallet.

I am for Mallett because either he suddenly "gets it" or we get a top 5 pick, either is fine with me. I am not in favor of going back to the dreaded 8-8 seasons. Not good enough to make playoffs but not bad enough to grab a top QB

Yeah, thinking long term I'm always a guy that would rather stink all the way or be pretty good. I hate the 8-8 style myself because you end up without the QB picks.

I just don't want Mallet man. He is to hard to watch. Plus, I don't want to see OB fail as our coach and I'd really like to see him as our long term answer. I like the guy, but right now I'm starting to worry.

I was big time in the camp "lets see Mallett to see what he has going for him". Now I am in the "keep Mallett out there because he sucks and we can get a top 5 pick and maybe land Jared Goff"

I think if we keep OB, Goff would be the ideal qb for him.

You're such a douche. I'd rather read Seegara's posts rather than yours. Please go sell shoes in the Chicago area and quit posting on this forum. Go hate somewhere else.

And you're such an internets tough guy, i mean i bet you cyber bully and digitally beat up what, 10-15 imaginary avatars and witty screen names per day dont ya? LOL par for the course among the 'inner circle' on this site and all the others. How about you take that backwoods edumacation you learnt somewhere between your stepdaddy teaching you how to chew skoal and your first wife leaving you for being such a meanie and get some reading comprehension? Novel idea huh?

Here i'll translate my post for you tough guy = I dont believe Mallet was hurt, just another ploy by the Myan Rallet Brigade to hold onto hope, lead the charge Kemosabe, lead the charge.

Now I'm not a pro QB, but I spent a fair amount of my life throwing the football and baseball around. Not once do I remember icing a sore pectoral muscle. I'm not sure what Mallett did initially or how he keeps aggravating it, but I just don't associate the pec being as essential in the throwing motion as say the shoulder or elbow.

Mullet starts the rest of the season ?! Good , we'll be in position to draft a quality QB prospect.

That's my thoughts ....

A good friend of mine has been a physical therapist for over 20yrs & owner of a very reputable clinic....She's a fan & an expert with Injuries like Malletts so I had her read your post....she even watch some replays of Mallett w/me today...she agrees w/ you & ask if your a physical therapist....she added something interesting & encouraging...She said that in many cases the repaired area of the pectoral muscle will scar & toughen & can eventually be stronger than before the tear.......PS: GREAT Post Bro

What the hell is he doing? Trying to be the next Kaitlin and grow tits!?!?

Doctor Bro made this point last season after Mallett tore the pec.

So let me get this straight - Mallet is hurt, it affects is throwing motion, and his already dicey accuracy is even worse. So O'Brien says, "Start him!"

Does this make sense?

I think that was the orders from above or that's my conspiracy theory anyway .

Thank you (Not a physical therapist... a trauma and reconstructive surgeon). When Mallet 1st went to surgery, I brought out that one oft- cited study showed that the Pec muscle tendon after repair could be expected to heal with ~120% of preoperative strength.

HammerHead (tm) will lose the game by 21 for us.
Hoyer would lose the game by 11.

I want no part of Hoyer ****ing around and winning one or two screwing us out of draft position early enough to get one of the top two QB prospects.

Cut Hoyer , start Mullet and sign the guy who worked with Kurt Warner in the grocery store .... Once he's ready bench Mullet and throw him to the wolves. If he doesn't work out do it again .... maybe his mechanic ?! or the shoe salesman ?!

They gotta be looking under every rock for a QB.

This is a joke right?

Neither one is going to be the answer to our problems so it doesn't make much difference to me which one starts but if it were my call I'd flip a coin right in front of them and go with the winner alternating every week and I'd tell them I was going to keep doing it until the season ended or one of them stepped up and did something about it.

Then no matter what happened I'd take a QB in the first round next year.

"the pectoral muscle will scar & toughen & can eventually be stronger than before the tear....."

If he keeps re-injuring it and it's getting stronger he will eventually throw a ball THROUGH a linebacker leaving a football sized hole. It may just slow the ball down enough that our receivers can hang onto it. See there is a plan!
