I was fully on board the Hackenberg hype train 2 years ago but if we drafted him #5 over Goff I would be pretty upset. I don't care what kind of relationship OB has with him. You draft the best players not your best friends. That's the kind of mentality that had us swapping out Fitz for Hoyer and that's looking pretty idiotic right about now.
What changed in the past few years? He's still the same guy.
Penn State has had a shitty coaching staff since O'Brien left.
He's been playing in a system he's not comfortable in. Fair enough.
If he's capable of playing in O'Brien's system as good as anybody I'm all for it.
Not all of those talented quarterbacks will be able to play well in our system.
Brian Hoyer was never the prospect that Hackenberg was. He went undrafted out of Michigan State. As bad as Hackenberg has struggled with the new coaching staff most NFL scouts agree he'll still be a first or second-round pick in the 2016 draft. Big difference to me. O'Brien briefly coached Hoyer with the Patriots but he rarely played. Tom Brady was their starting quarterback. I don't think we can compare his relationship with Hoyer to that of Hackenberg. He made a mistake naming him the starting quarterback this season. Hoyer just isn't good. But as a free agent it didn't hurt to sign him. He knew the system. He just sucks is all.
Some mocks have him going as high as 5 to the Texans because we flat out suck right now at 0-2. I still think if we end up at 5-11, 6-10 or 8-8, whatever the case, he's still a possibility for us in the 10 to 19 pick range. That's a more likely scenario for us. If I had to guess I think we'll end up 6-10 or 7-9.
I don't have it in my heart to cheer for Texans losses anymore, tanking for the first overall pick, like I did in 2005 and 2013. You play to win the damn game!!!!! And none of those first overall picks made us any better record wise. So lesson learned for sure. I want to win as many games as we can no matter what. That year we won some games late in the season for pride, 2010 I think it was, ended up landing us J.J. Watt. Had we picked higher we may not have drafted him.
So I'm not about tanking for Jared Goff. A guy who may not even be all that great in Bill O'Brien's system. When we can land a guy, who's very familiar with his system and once thrived in it (albeit in college), later on in the draft.
You just never know really. The NFL Draft is a crap shoot.
But I learned that playing to win is always the best mentality.
