USA v Japan

I remember enjoying a football game (probably on NFLnetwork, perhaps in the aughts) of college players repping USA versus a same aged Japanese comprised team. TV production was high level IIRCC & even the unis were tight. Came across this game often when clicking.

Anyone know what i'm talking about?
?WTF was that? Is that an annual thing?

BTW, it was an entertaining and surpassingly well played game. Probably why it's been filed in my brain attic.

Danke.

Danm, i remember the stands being full & a lot more energy (surely a different, earlier year.) Maybe that was an exemplary game, would explain it's frequent rebroadcasts.

I know many of Japanese love to play basketball, football(cool factor) and, rugby. I understand young Japanese have a passion in playing these sports but, these mentioned sports are not favorable for Japanese. Size differences(tallest 6'2 and average height under 6'0) are just too huge. Japan has football league in both Uni and come company owned(they do not play football 100% had to work for the company as well) so, they do have some what fundamental but, when other foreign countries(European and African) other than the U.S. decide to play football seriously, we have no chance at all just like rugby.

I didn't know that the sport of American Football was played so competitively in Japan. I knew they loved the game over there from previous NFL games played in Tokyo, Japan. It's grown a lot over there in the past 30 or so years just like it's grown in other countries like Mexico.

I always thought they could develop some big and strong offensive lineman from Japan. Maybe even defensive lineman, if some of their elite athletes with big size, mainly sumo wrestlers, became more involved in the sport. They have some really big dudes who can block you. All they would have to learn is technique. Get them involved with some good coaching over here in the states.

I'm actually shocked that there aren't many, if any, Japanese players in the NFL.

I came across this article from a few years ago. Interesting...

Former Dallas Cowboys scout Larry Dixon believes that as the world is getting smaller through globalization, there will one day be a Japanese player in the National Football League — though he can’t guarantee when.

“It’s just a matter of time until there is a Japanese athlete who is good enough to play (in the NFL),” Dixon said after the NFL Japan Combine held at the practice field of X League club Tokyo Gas Creators in Tokyo on Sunday.

Speaking of Rugby. I watched the USA team get trounced by New Zealand not too long ago. 74-6 the final. If only more of our top-tier athletes focused on Rugby, or even soccer (men's soccer), we could compete in those two sports a lot better around the world.

I want to see the USA men win a World Cup one day or the USA Rugby team making us proud. I'd follow Rugby a lot more if we had a team worth watching. I actually understand the rules but I just don't bother to become a fan because we look over-matched way too often.

But I digress, we'll probably see Japan becoming good at American Football long before we see the USA Rugby or USA men's soccer team becoming a dominant force on the International scene.

I know it's hard to take your lumps. It must be a difficult challenge for Japan's young football players. But I wish those guys the best. They just have to keep at it and work hard. NFL scouts look for talent all around the world.

Nice to hear a positive comment of Japanese football players and I hope they do well. However, please check the differences in size of Japanese and American front 7. To most of us Japanese, even 6'3 or 6'4 are giants for us. Imagine, Akeem Dent playing against JJ or JD. Physique is one thing you can't overcome especially the most of Japanese comes with slim frame even you happen to be over 6'4, they can't pack much of weight. Except, if you were Sumo Wrestler which is rare in Japan. A position that Japanese may able to play in the NFL is a Kicker position for now. Maybe in the future, RB, WR, DB. For other positions, I am not so sure. I went HS and UNI in the U.S. and I've seen football players are so big yet their are so fast, quick and, powerful. Now, I've seen fast Japanese, quick Japanese and, powerful Japanese but, all together in one body. I have not. Beside, football player population is small so, if there are people with that physique, chances of them playing football are very slim.
