Report: Brian Hoyer to be named Texans starting QB

incase anyone wanted to know
Deepi Sidhu ‏@DeepSlant 4m4 minutes ago
Despite the announcement, all three QBs will still play vs. New Orleans. #Texans

Now Mallet will completely tear it up against New Orleans (and then later Dallas) so that Texans fans watching Hoyer struggle early in the year will have all that preseason glory to bring their rage to a bloody froth. It might be fools gold at that point but we'll still have the fever.

Over under on 8 wins?

I'll take the under. 5-11 fellas.

I'm waiting to hear how long Arian is going to be out. We're not beating the Chiefs, or Colts without Arian. Most likely won't beat Atlanta, Carolina, or Miami either. Which leaves the Jags & Bucs before November.

If Arian is gimpy when he comes back, we're not going to beat Tennessee or Cincinatti either. So that'll be 2-7 through week 9.

Yeah, maybe Chris Polk can be this year's Justin Forsett, or maybe Blue will be this year's Leveon Bell.

If we can get Arian back in game shape, week 3 or 4, then maybe we can be 5-5 through week 9. Hopefully we'll win 4 of the next 6 and finish 9-7 with a shot at going 10-6.

OB "I try to make every decision that I believe is best for the team. We work hard to put the players in the best position to win."

OB on Hoyer "He's shown an ability to make smart decisions for the team."

OB on Hoyer "Football teaches you how to bounce back up after you've been knocked down. That's part of his mental toughness."

OB on Hoyer "We believe in him. He understands our system. He brings energy, intelligence, poise, good communicator with teammates."

OB on Hoyer when Browns were 6-3 last season "He did some good things in situational football, led his team from behind to win."

OB "Teammates have respect for them. They have a lot of respect in the locker room. Team knows it was a competitive situation."

OB on Hoyer "To be more detailed oriented, to get into a better rhythm offensively. Continue to get better. It's a progress league."

OB "There wasn't a drastic difference. Brian's been a little more consistent since the start of OTAs."

OB "A lot of thought went into this decision. It was time to make a decision in the best interest of the team. We want 2b more consistent."

OB "We didn't target this week. There was real competition between Brian and Ryan."

OB "When u no you're the starter, it can make a difference. He'll get more reps and have a chance to continue to improve."

OB "We all need to give Brian a chance. He has an opportunity. I believe in his ability to run our offense efficiently."

OB "We're all on a short leash. It's a results-oriented league. Brian has to play well."

OB "I have a ton of respect for Ryan. I believe in him. Last year we played 4 QBs. He'll prepare every week like he's the starter."

OB "A tough decision and a true competition. Smart guys, good in locker room, good teammates. Brian showed most consistency."

OB "Felt like it's important to give Brian a chance to play as the starter this week. He starts and will play a while."

OB "We put a lot of thought into QB position. Spoke to them this morning and then the team and told them we named Brian starter."

#Texans O'Brien: I don't put a lot of stock in the preseason games for QB decision. It's more about practice.

#Texans O'Brien likes a lot about Hoyer. Great leadership. Commands huddle. Now he's got to go do it on the field.

#Texans O'Brien: I saw Hoyer do a great job in late game situations with the Browns last year.

All 3 #Texans QBs will play Sunday vs Saints. Says O'Brien.

#Texans O'Brien: it's been a close competition. It's on and off the field decision. Hoyer a little bit more consistent.

#Texans O'Brien: I made this decision. Never had a target date. We had enough information today after a long night looking at tape.

#Texans O'Brien: Mallett will still get reps but Hoyer gets more now.

#Texans O'Brien: is Hoyer long term solution at QB? He has shown he can be successful starting QB. He deserves the opportunity.

#Texans O'Brien: is Hoyer on a short leash? We all are. I am. It's a results business in the #NFL.

#Texans O'Brien: Hoyer showed more consistency. This was a true competition.

#Texans O'Brien: told Hoyer and Mallett at 7:40 this morning. Hoyer is the starter. Tough decision. Mr. McNair trusts me.

#Texans Hoyer excels in all the areas O'Brien said we can't see. Leadership, film room, QB meetings.

Dale Robertson ‏@sportywineguy
BOB: "We feel really good about the QB play we've had in practice and we feel really good about where we are an offense."

BOB: "I try to make decisions every single day that are for the best of the team. I try to match our team's work ethic."

BOB: "He's shown the ability to make smart decisions for the team. If he continues doing that, we'll be in good shape."

BOB: No, @clownejd will NOT play against Saints.

BOB: "@bhoyer7 has mental toughness."

BOB: Had @bhoyer7 as undrafted rookie in NE. "Wide-eyed kid" but he won backup job behind Tom Brady.

BOB: "Football teaches you a lot about being knocked down and picking yourself back up." Cites LB Mike Mohamed as example.

BOB: No update on Arian Foster except to say he's back "rehabbing."

BOB: Says strong safety remains "a competition" between Andre Hal and Eddie Pleasant." But said Hal has had a "strong camp."

BOB: @bhoyer7 started fresh in Houston. Not being judged on anything he did before joining Texans.

BOB: @bhoyer7 "is a smart guy with a real good work ethic. Lot of enthusiasm. Understands how to manage the game."

BOB: Expects Mallett to keep working hard and trying to improve. Reminds media of how Ryan Fitzpatrick got benched, then returned strong.

BOB: "This is a results-oriented business. @bhoyer7 has to go in there and play well."

BOB: "Hopefully we'll get into a little better rhythm" offensively with the decision.

BOB: "All 3 (quarterbacks) will play" against Saints."

BOB: "There's not a drastic difference between the two. But @bhoyer7 has been a little more consistent."

BOB: "It was time to make a decision for offensive cohesion."

BOB: "With added reps hopefully @bhoyer7 will have a chance to improve. We thought we had enough information" to make the decision.

BOB: "We think @bhoyer7 can be a successful quarterback."

BOB: "We all need to give @bhoyer7 a chance. He's got an opportunity. I believe in his ability to run our offense efficiently."

BOB: "We're all on a short leash. I'm on a short leash. This is a results-oriented business. That's the way the NFL is set up."

BOB: @bhoyer7 showed most consistency and understanding of the system.

BOB: Important to give @bhoyer7 the whole week to work with 1s. "A very tough decision . . . This is why Bob McNair pays me what he pays me"

BOB: Lot of thought went into QB decision. Told QBs and team this morning.

Tania Ganguli ‏@taniaganguli
Jadeveon Clowney will not play against the Saints. #Texans

"We're gonna go with Brian. It's a results oriented business and Brian understands that." -- OBrien on Hoyer. #Texans

O'Brien says he only watched Cleveland film before they played the #Texans last year. Wheels came off for the team after that.

Bill O'Brien says Mallett and Hoyer were evaluated on what they did here, not what they did in previous seasons. #Texans

O'Brien says he hopes the team will get into a better rhythm offensively now that this decision was made. #Texans

"It's been a close competition," OBrien says. Says Hoyer has been more consistent since OTAs.
"We all need to give Brian Hoyer a chance. ... I believe in him, I believe in his ability to run our offense efficiently." OBrien #Texans

O'Brien assumes we'll ask if Hoyer is on a short leash. "We're all on a short leash." #Texans

Adam Wexler ‏@awexler
"We evaluated these guys for what they did here," O'Brien. Added they didn't look at what Hoyer/Mallett did elsewhere previously.

"It's been a close competition. The practices, situations we put them in, meetings. It's a lot of things that went into decision," O'Brien

"It's time to name a starter, we feel like we have enough information," O'Brien on how the process of picking a QB went. #Texans

"There is something to be said for that," O'Brien on if Hoyer may play better now that he knows he's the starter & gets more reps. #Texans

O'Brien has started this press conference like he knows what is going to be asked, has basically asked himself the 1st 3 questions #Texans

"There is absolutely no doubt that is was a competition. I thought Brian showed the most consistency and composure," O'Brien #Texans

O’Brien told the QBs a little before 8am, then told the team that Hoyer is the starter. #Texans

If, like it appears here, your goal is to make par.
As I understand it, Par could be a good strategy to start out with, and then you swing for the fence when the chance arises. No?

I think Mickerson could have done better if he came to term with that approach sooner.
Do you disagree?

"We only judged them on what they did here."

"Hoyer did well in late game situations last year."

Well at least the QB is 'consistent.'

As I understand it, Par could be a good strategy to start out with, and then you swing for the fence when the chance arises. No?

No.

Par is an ok strategy when they hand out checks for being 52nd on the leader board. It sucks for football where there is only 1 prize.

Shooting for par is a **** strategy in the NFL. It's hopeless.

honestly? did not see that coming...

btw, I'm a bit outside the circle here :)

anyone can tell me why he's not with the browns anymore?

did he left or did they cut him?

So let's take the Mallett context out of the Hoyer equation. Do you think that Hoyer is the long term answer for this team? Honest question for dialogue, not challenging that you do think that and need to justify it.

I don't. Dude is turning 30 in six weeks, has been a backup/journeyman his whole career, and won the starting gig by being the default in the coach's head. It's silly to hear people argue that OB went with the experience factor. He has what? 17 career starts? One season. So I see this team starting off no better this year than last year in terms of having someone under center who will be the long term answer. Looking forward to the next FA project or low round draft pick project next year.

No I don't. But O'Brien clearly isn't thinking long term here just like he wasn't last year. He thinks Hoyer is better than Mallett right now and he wants to win right now. Fans hate that kind of mentality but if he doesn't win he doesn't keep his job.

If anybody is angry about Brian Hoyer being named the starting quarterback they should direct their anger towards Ryan Mallett's inability to step up and win the job with some consistently good play. He's always making dumb mistakes which irritate Bill O'Brien.

We should not be putting Brian Hoyer down or thinking any less of him. All he did was work hard in practices, had that beautiful TD pass to Shorts running in stride in one of the preseason games, and was named the starting quarterback for the 2015 Houston Texans. Now is the time to rally behind Brian Hoyer and cheer for him moving forward. I'm sure if he plays well many people who criticized him will become a believer if the team is winning games.

Always making dumb mistakes ??? He has had 2 starts and played in a whooping 2 pre season games with the Texans. I would like to know where he has even had the opportunity to make ALL THESE SO CALLED dumb mistakes....

The list is extensive.

That one INT on the first Hard Knocks episode and...

It seems he's making them in practice. According to what was posted, Hoyer was the one who was more consistent in practice than Mallett.

Let's be precise here. Hoyer is magically consistent in closed practice.

lucky_the_leprechaun.jpg

When people can see him he hides his pot o' gold and it's a dead heat.

Every year it's the same about the QB position. Some people saying they don't want the guy we got and some people saying the coach couldn't be wrong because he is the coach. It sure would be nice to have a quarterback some day that appeared to be good enough to give everybody some hope before the season started.

So who are we drafting #1 in 2016?

Just kidding, I'm actually kind of apathetic about the QB situation regardless of who won. Hoyer is basically Fitzpatrick minus the great facial hair. Not having Arian is going to suck. Our defense should be good enough to keep us out of the AFCS cellar, though. I see us going between 7-9 to 9-7 at best.

We need a franchise QB, badly. I hope Bridgewater or Bortles don't make us regret taking Clowney at some point.

It seems he's making them in practice. According to what was posted, Hoyer was the one who was more consistent in practice than Mallett.

What someone does in practice means squat to me. Give him some extensive time starting during the regular season and then say that, but not just practice and a few snaps in 2 preseason games. Hoyers list of failuers is much greater in all fairness, but because he has also been given more opportunity than Mallett.

New Hotness

Still in the on deck circle

And Hoyer's not with the Browns because his contract expired.

(and yes, I know the idea of "New Hotness" is in and of itself "Old and Busted")

O'Brien didn't attach himself to Hoyer and say he's the guy, even if ship is on fire. If Hoyer falters, it's next (captain) man up. #Texans

O'Brien bringing up Mallett taking over for Fitz, then Fitz replacing injured Mallett last season during Hoyer presser says it all. #Texans

Takeaway from O'Brien's presser: Made clear that if Hoyer doesn't cut it as starter, job will quickly re-open during season. #Texans

O'Brien said Hoyer must produce. Is he on a short-team leash? Everyone in NFL must excel.

Deepi Sidhu ‏@DeepSlant
Pressure is working 40-50 hours a week, paycheck-to-paycheck. This is a privilege, Hoyer says of pressure to be starting QB in the NFL.

"We both competed very hard," Hoyer said of him and Mallett. Knows that he needs to continue to earn it every day. #Texans

Hoyer got the news this morning with the other QBs. Said he was excited but also prepared for the news that he'd be the backup. #Texans

Hoyer says he has an appreciation for the game after going through hardships like his ACL injury in 2013. #Texans

Hoyer says he prepares the same whether he's the starter or the backup, like his time in NE. #Texans

Brian Hoyer on being named starter: It's an honor and a privilege. #Texans

Aaron Wilson ‏@AaronWilson_NFL
Duane Brown on Brian Hoyer: 'He makes plays and protects the ball. He's got good presence. He brings energy to the huddle.'

Duane Brown on Brian Hoyer: 'He's not a speed demon, but he's very productive on his feet.'

Brian Hoyer: 'Pressure is working 45 hours a week, living pay check to pay check to feed a family of four

Brian Hoyer: 'I want to earn the respect of my teammates. The only way to do that is to win games.'

Brian Hoyer: 'There's ups and downs, there's adversity. You realize there's going to be some bumps, some highs and lows.'

Mark Berman ‏@MarkBermanFox26
"Pressure is someone working 45 hours a week, living paycheck to paycheck to feed a family of 4.That's real pressure."

"Even to this day I always remember getting cut. For me that drives me.To have that chip on my shoulder gives me more motivation"

Brian Hoyer (@bhoyer7): "I want to go out and earn the respect of my teammates & the only way you do that is win football games. #Texans

Brian Hoyer (@bhoyer7) on being named #Texans starting QB: "That doesn't mean much. You've got to go out & earn it."

Brian Hoyer:"Sense of accomplishment, sense of excitement.I want to prove to my teammates &this organization I can be a winning quarterback"

Greg Bailey ‏@GregBailey13
Texans Duane Brown on #Hoyer: it's exciting. He's done an incredible job. It's good to know now. #abc13sports

#Texans #Hoyer: Pressure? That's someone working paycheck to paycheck to support a family. This is a game that we want to win. #abc13sports

#Texans #Hoyer: the goal is always perfection but in the #NFL that doesn't always happen. I have to earn this every day.

#Texans #Hoyer: I have talked with Mallett but today has been a whirlwind. #abc13sports

#Texans #Hoyer: i didn't know I had the job until this morning at 7:55. Now I have to go win.

John McClain ‏@McClain_on_NFL
Hoyer won't have to be The Destroyer, as they nicknamed him in Cleveland. He needs to move the chains and not turn it over.

By running more than any team in the league last season and finishing tied for 2nd in turnover ratio, Texans finished 9-7.

This is O'Brien's 4th season with Hoyer. He's not going to ask his QB to do things he can't do. He'll be a game manager.

Hoyer will play better for Texans than Browns. He has better players and coaches. They'll run the ball a lot and play terrific defense.

Duane Brown has blocked for Mallett, Fitzpatrick, Savage, Keenum, Schaub and Yates last 2 seasons. Add Hoyer to the list.

Duane Brown on Hoyer "He's confident, experienced and he takes command of the huddle."

Duane Brown on Hoyer "He's not a speed demon, but he can make plays with his feet."

LT Duane Brown on Hoyer "He makes plays and protects the ball. He's got good pocket presence. He brings energy to the huddle."

Hoyer "I don't want this opportunity to get away. I want to take advantage of it."

Hoyer "Competition pushes you to be better. That's all I've ever known."

Hoyer "That chip on my shoulder gives me more motivation. I have to work hard to keep earning this job."

Tania Ganguli ‏@taniaganguli
"To this day I always remember getting cut. It could always happen, you never know," Brian Hoyer says. #Texans

O'Brien met with the quarterbacks together this morning. Hoyer was preparing also to hear that he would be the backup. #Texans

"I think pushed each other. It made us both better quarterbacks," Brian Hoyer on Ryan Mallett. #Texans

"A sense of excitement. A sense of accomplishment. ... I have to go out and earn it every day." @bhoyer7 #Texans

I don't think the competition was real. Hoyer's stats just don't bear it out and he looked like a scared little kid against a good Denver pass rush. The same kind of pass rush KC will be bringing on Sept. 13.
I'll take Mallet's 15-18/113 yds. accuracy all day long. Hoyer was 9-14 for 119 yds. 58 of those came on one freaking play.
Having said all that, I can't root for Hoyer to fail. I'll put my faith in OB and pull for Hoyer. Until he costs the Texans a game. Then it's pink soap time. lol

Ugh when you put their stats next to one another its even worse

If Hoyer is the answer, it must have been a really screwed up question.

OB's mom is right, he does need to quit swearing and go back to church and start praying...

Based on this decision, it's time to trade JJ to a contender so that his career is not wasted the way Earl and AJ's were as part of Houston football. I'll bet that Rick Smith could get lots of draft picks for JJ that could be used on either marginal, unhealthy, over-rated or project type players that can bloat the salary cap.
Earl went to two AFCCG's. Hardly wasted, imo.
This decision today smacks of OB taking the safe route. I do not like it one bit, but it's done and now we'll have to see how it goes.

I know a lot of people were critical of Mallett not going downfield a lot, but vanilla O vs. vanilla D, taking what's there and hoping a playmaker makes a play isn't bad QB play. That's EXACTLY what Hoyer did on the long TD to Shorts. I'm really disappointed in OB's pick. Like I said above, it seems like he's taking the safe route.

Par is an ok strategy when they hand out checks for being 52nd on the leader board. It sucks for football where there is only 1 prize.

Well, maybe they'll purchase a driver for next season and get rid of the 5 woods and 3 iron hybrids off the tee.

Most around here enjoy the Texans taking the "safe" pick in the draft. Now they don't? So fickle... :)

Unfortunately, this wasn't the draft. They took a safe pick at 1.16 and he looks pretty good. The newly named starting QB, not so much. The Texans aren't even using a hybrid to tee off. They're using a 6 iron. I'd have been happier if OB named Savage the starter. That kid has come a long way.
Oddly enough, Hoyer has appeared in 32 games. Isn't that the number needed to decide if a QB is starter worthy? I know they weren't all starts, but still. 56.5 completion % and tied at 19 on TD's/INT's. Not impressed.

I was talking about the safe pick last time they had 1.1.

FWIW, I was a Bortles fan. I would've been fine with him holding a clipboard for the Texans last year. I didn't care for the JDC pick, but, like today, got behind it once it was done. I'm a Texans fan much more than a player fan. I hope AJ has 25 drops against the Texans this year.

I'm just really curious as to what OB sees in Hoyer's 60% preseason completion ratio vs. Mallett's 83% completion ratio. Practice is practice but games , preseason or not, are games. Minus one big catch & run by Shorts, Mallett has much better stats. And a quicker release, better arm, blah, blah, blah.

Good question. His contract was up. There wasn't a lot of fanfare with his departure either. At least not as much for the winningest QB they've had in over a decade.

As if he & OB arranged all this before the league year started.

Hoyer Career so far:

56.5% completions
7.2 yd average
19/19 TD/INT ratio
Taken 36 sacks in 32 games played

Picking that % goes up and everything else gets worse.

OB has tied himself to a very leaky vessel. HC's sink or swim with QB selections and his choice is tired and in a rip current. If Hoyer falls on his face and OB doesn't make a change, I'll pop my pink soap cherry.
Hoyer's career stats. Not pretty.

How about we give OB a benefit of the doubt. Let's wait and see what the results are going to be before having a melt down..... Its not that serious.
