All I know is a lot of us were sure excited about the clowney pick. And how'd that work out for us? Maybe we should go along with the naysayers and trash every pick we get.

Dont count me in on that factory of sadness!

Because starting rookie CBs is a bad idea.

That is why I am optimistic about this pick. I hope we learned a lot from the last go around.

And having someone like Kareem is a plus for Johnson. Say what you want about Kareem and his play, but the guy has a degree of mental toughness. To go through his rookie and 2nd year and shake off all the negativity and poor play is something some athletes can't do. There was a time that I though l thought he was going to be Brad Lidged and have to go elsewhere to make a fresh start and career.

You missed my point, which means I didn't make myself clear. It's not about the cap impact of the #16 pick it's about the flexibility this guy provides. Drafting J-Jo's replacement this year means he (J-Jo) is expendable if he doesn't sign a club-friendly extension. We're in better posture to let him walk if necessary in 2016. That should free up significant cap space. AND possibly result in a 3rd or 4th rd comp pick.
Why is that a bad thing again?

Also gives you room to work with pending 2016 RFA's Bouye & Morris.

Definitely not the flashiest prospect or someone who gets me excited, but I'll wait and see how it plays out before I grab my pitchfork.

WR in round 2 please.

I've got so many fans who read and remember everything I write, I'm so lucky. So many experts got the Texans pick wrong, or did the Texans? And both those picks will go to more Pro Bowls than the Texans pick.

Yup ... thats what Mel Kiper said about Mark Spindler .

Also gives you room to work with pending 2016 RFA's Bouye & Morris.

Exactly.
And for those who want to wait until next year, what CB in the 2016 draft has all the attributes as KJ2 does??

As many have said, you DO NOT want to start a rookie at CB1 or CB2. We've lived through that cluster. It wasn't pretty.

Just met Kevin Johnson and his family. Very impressive. He'll compete 4 playing time as third CB behind Kareem Jackson and Johnathan Joseph

I've been reading so many scouting reports on Johnso. All agree he can cover man. Difference is against the run. They're all over the place.

Interesting that so many worried about CB Kevin Johnson's size: At combine he was 6-0 1/4, 188. Trae Waynes was 6-0 1/8, 186.

Richard Sherman ran a 4.53s 40 during his combine performance. He has no problem keeping up with faster receivers. The Texans assessed Kevin Johnson's entire skillset - they obviously believe he fits into RAC's defense very well and provides the team with a bona fide cover corner to replace Joseph.

There are some really talented players still available. Texans have the flexibility to move up in the draft if necessary with 9 more picks. They'll fill team needs.

CB Kevin Johnson's solid football acumen, coupled with his athleticism, gives the Texans' D a young player with the potential to be exceptional. Give the player a chance to prove himself, to grow into a NFL player before writing him off.

So what if the Texans are stockpiling CBs. The Seahawks stockpiled defensive ends in creating a perennial Super Bowl contender.

I agree. Two tenths of a second translates into 2 yards of cushion. four tenths reaction time translates into 4 yards of cushion. So he should have no trouble if he plays five or six yards off the fastest receivers. Our current crop usually plays 12 yards deep on third and three.

Division picks:

Best Pick = Jags, Dante Fowler
2nd Best Pick = Titans, Marcus Mariota
3rd Best Pick = Colts, Phillip Dorsett
4th Best Pick =Texans, Kevin Johnson

Perspective, 13 year pattern of behavior of Texans not really knowing what they're doing on draft day is still alive and well.

Lol...i see Texian is in midseason form..

defenseless receiver no football move made. It's b.s. but you know it would be called, especially if it was a patriots, broncos, or colts receiver

Looks to me like he was turning upfield to continue running after the catch

Yup - it's arguable whether he is defenseless at all but that's not the end of the inquiry and even if he is there is no prohibited contact.

My complaint is not that it's illegal, but that he makes zero effort to wrap. Looks like Dunta or DJ.

Bingo. My first thought when I saw the gif was "that's either a highlight reel play for him or for the WR". In the NFL that won't fly.

Considering the Jags and Titans haven't drafted 1 decent player between them in the past 10 years I hesitate to say they can do better than ours.

Colts can play only 5 eligible receivers on any 1 play. Considering they don't have any lineman that can block JJ on their own, they don't have any one lineman that can contain Wilfork, or someone that could block Clowney (provided he's healthy), I don't think the Colts are going to be running all those guys at once anyways and hope to keep Luck upright.

I'm perfectly fine with Johnson as the pick.
It was too early for any of the ILBs.
I'm not a fan of Perriman and his poor hands.
Draft an Interior lineman at 16 would have caused rioting on Kirby.
Dupree was available, but there are too many questions about his work ethic, his motivation, his 1 year wonder status for me.
Marcus Peters argued with his coaches and was kicked off UW. I don't want that guy here.

It's not like the draft ends after round 1. (It might feel like it based on some of our mid-round picks, though). There are still plenty of good WR, ILB, OLB options out there. The Texans have 9 more picks. They have the best coach in the division. (I'm sorry, but if he can take a 2-14 team to 9-7 without the benefit of Andrew Luck then he is better than Pagano).

This is a playoff team if they can stay healthy.

Uh... Can't tackle a dude if he doesn't catch the ball.

People remember your posts because you live in a world of extremes and don't allow for any shade of gray between black and white. Things are not as simple as you make them out to be.

I really wish there was a way to visit a parallel universe where you actually get to play a GM. I think it would be entertaining to be a fan of a team in your division.

FYI on your dislike for Dorsett;

PDS ‏@PatDStat 7m7 minutes ago

Texans tried twice to get back into the first. Once for Bud Dupree and as @SportsRadio610 said Phillip Dorsett.

I'm pretty sure he disliked Colts' pick of Dorsett, not Dorsett.

Lol.

I called the Titans and asked if he could be GM, but they hung up on me.

I was looking for something else and seeing other needs, but I won't bash a top CB prospect. I value that position too much.

It'll be years of waiting, but we'll be real glad to have this guy some day.

Truth spoken

I say it almost every year at draft time. I can't believe Rick Smith and the coaching staff do not consult this message board before making their picks.

This message board would do a better job at drafting than Rick Smith. The last 2 draft classes have been abysmal. The only contributor from last year's class was a below average 6th round RB. Sam Montgomery and other losers from the year prior. I have more faith in the collective wisdom of this board as opposed to Rick Smith. Keep drinking the Kool Aid gwallaia.

This MB including its draftniks were heavily in favor of last year's draft as it happened. It was one of the most favorably received drafts the Texans have had.

From the NFL Rule Book:

A receiver attempting to catch a pass; or who has completed a catch and has not had time to protect himself or has not clearly become a runner. If the receiver/runner is capable of avoiding or warding off the impending contact of an opponent, he is no longer a defenseless player;

I've watched it on the "small" screen.........nevertheless, he did not have time to protect himself or clearly become a receiver, nor was he capable of avoiding or warding off the impending contact of the opponent since he never saw the opponent before contact.

But he isn't hit in a prohibited fashion even if he is defenseless.

There's no doubt that was a defenseless receiver. However, there was no illegal contact, & he did not "launch" himself. That's textbook.

Sometimes the refs get it wrong, erring on the side of caution & safety of the player, but Johnson would not get fined by the league.

.......but without the All 22 views, there is no way to definitely say that there wasn't helmet contact.........small or big screen.

I'm digging this pick. Looks like he has number 1 corner potential to me. Looks like a corner through and through. Tackles like a corner moves like a corner. Looks like a player dedicated to his craft. Excellent burst breaking on routes in front of him. Really good ball location skills. Love the feet. Very good quick feet. Looks like he studies routes/opponents. Good speed.

Dude has a chance to be really good imo.

There's a shortcut version of that game on youtube.
The play was replayed with a few different views.
There was no helmet contact to the head or the neck area.
:kitten:
The announcer even corrected himself and agreed that a no-call is correct.

But, we all know the zebras can always call whatever they want.

Thanks. I knew your adamant conclusion could not have been based solely on that gif. Rep coming your way.

Now CND, you know in today's modern-day NFL not only is the DB prevented from laying a hit like that on a defenseless receiver, but the DB is expected to provide moral support and emotional comfort in case the receiver fails to make the catch.
