Selection 3.70, Jaelen Strong, WR, Arizona State

2014: First-team All-Pac 12. Biletnikoff Award semifinalist. Started 12 games. 2013: Second-team All-Pac 12. Played in all 14 games with 13 starts. 2012 (Pierce College): 67 receptions, 1,263 yards, 15 TD in 10 games. 2011: Sat out season due to academic reasons. High School: 17 receptions for 318 yards as a senior. Chose to attend Pierce College over offers from Eastern Michigan, Villanova and VMI.

PRO DAY RESULTS
20-yard shuttle: 4.19 seconds
Three-cone drill: 7.33 seconds

STRENGTHS Good combination of height, weight and arm length for the position. Former high school basketball player who knows how to keep defenders on his hip. Drives back to the ball from top of the route. Adjusts routes in space. Developed nifty inside release to defeat press. Comfortable from slot, using varying route tempo for separation. Tracks ball well. Good strength in hands and makes contested catches. Decent leaper who will climb the ladder for a catch or sink and secure low throw. Strong lower body and physical after catch. Sun Devils used him frequently on shallow crossers, bubble screens and hitches.

WEAKNESSES Still raw and learning to play the position. Allows too many throws into his frame and ball will beat him up at times on crossers. Not twitchy or sudden as an athlete. Long-strider who takes a while to build up speed. Play speed average at best. Rarely gets separation deep against man-to-man. Routes need improvement. Forced to make a substantial amount of contested throws. Corners don't fear his speed and are able to sit on underneath throws.

DRAFT PROJECTION Round 1 or 2

SOURCES TELL US "He's not going to run fast, but it won't matter because any team who drafts him is going to have a plan for him. When he has a quarterback who can throw him open, his speed won't matter much. I love him." -- NFC West scout

BOTTOM LINE Individual elements of Strong's game aren't awe-inspiring, but scouts really love the entirety of his game and where it is headed. His strength, size and ability to catch contested throws will be coveted by some, but his issues with separation quickness can only be solved if he becomes much better in his route-running. Strong looks the part of a physical, possession receiver with a relatively high floor.
One pro scout's take on Strong...
Junior entry into your starter from Philadelphia PA. Junior-college transfer led the Sun Devils and receiving for two seasons. Strong plays a big physical game with some sneaky athletic ability. He has elite upside with his combination of size, strength, speed, and ball skills. He is a weapon on third-down and near the end zone with his ability in traffic to go up and get the ball. Strong has a versatile tool and skill set that does need to be smoothed around the edges. Tall and thick. Long strider that can run away from a secondary when you have the ball. High on field IQ, reads the defense and makes quick decisions and reactions. Shows no hesitation in going after the ball over the middle in a prone position to be hit. High points the ball. Physical runner after the catch. Tough for a loan defensive back to bring down. Can plant his foot and change direction quickly. Strong blocker that takes pride in that part of the game.

Love this pick....kid reminds me of anquan boldin...not fast but knows how to get open and has damn good hands... Finally got a wr...

I think I'm the only person who wasn't high on Strong. I think he just has a disconnect mentally, something isn't there. Look at the percentage of easy catches he struggles to handle cleanly. He might still reel them in, but it never looks natural to me.

Christ I hope the guy comes in and lights it up, goes insane and has a AJ type of career here, but I just see Jacoby Jones hands all over again.

You're a Texan now Jaelen Strong, best of luck, kick some ass.

Shoulda made the poll public ....

There have been mocks that had him going to the Texans in the first ....to get him in the 3rd is real good value.

CB , the first ILB off the board & a WR projected much higher than the 3rd - Real hard to find something to ***** about. Seems a lot like last year where I was happy with just about every pick .... Sure hope this group contributes more than last years.

Jaelen Strong said he watched plenty of You Tube highlights of Andre Johnson studying his game #Texans

Like it, but don't love it. I'd rather have a guy who can take the top off of a defense but I'm good with it though. I'm just not sure if a speed demon was even available at that point.

Same thought just hit me.

This is a lot like last year's draft.

Why did he fall?

Wrist injury, I've heard. Unless it requires amputation, I don't care. Strong was the best player available not being questioned in a murder investigation. The best pick so far for the Texans.

The Texans started the day with 7 picks on the 3rd day of the draft. Now, they have 4. Just need to make them count.

I feel better about this draft, now.

They could have gone with Sammie Coates, but Strong is a more reliable pick.

4.44 is fast but I like his ability to catch the ball in traffic.

We noted yesterday that former Arizona State receiver Jaelen Strong would miss Saturday’s medical re-check in Indianapolis, and that he had a visit with the Steelers. As it turned out, Strong’s visit allowed the Steelers’ doctors to give Strong’s injured wrist a thorough check.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Strong went through a battery of tests on his wrist during his visit to Pittsburgh. According to Schefter, the Steelers’ doctors cleared Strong and are sending the results of his checkup to other teams.

It’s odd that Strong is getting the re-check from the Steelers’ doctors rather than going through the process that most players recovering from injuries go through in Indianapolis. It’s unclear whether every other team will be satisfied with getting a report from the Steelers’ staff.

Despite a report that Strong would need surgery to repair the broken bone in his wrist, Strong says he played five games through the injury and is fine.

Strong will attend the draft and is viewed as a late-first or early-second-round pick.

Doc can give us better info.

Didn't go the way I expected but they nailed the 3 positions I wanted to see addressed in the 1st 3 rounds (assuming they play McKinney at ILB).

I wanted Coates. When I saw Strong projected in some mocks at 16 I looked at him & just didn't fall in love with him. I didn't see what others saw & wasn't excited about the idea of taking him at 16.

Even when the offensive play makers I wanted were gone before 16, I cringed at the idea of taking Strong. I just don't see anything special.

Maybe a safer pick than anyone available now, but I wanted to take a chance on Coates... I'd rather have taken a chance on Coates.

Still, I was wrong about Posey, hopefully I'm just as wrong about Strong.

^^^ This

edit: Versatility seems to be the theme with the first 2 picks, not sure about Strong tho... he wasn't my fave WR avail

Anyone thinking Strong is going to come right out and light up the scoreboard should realize he still needs 1-2 seasons of polish. He's very coachable according to scouts though. Also like how he plays through pain

So now we have 2 slowish WRs. Sigh. I was hoping for a wideout that could test Mallets arm.

All 3 of our draft picks have 40+ inch verticals.

We know Hopkins can snag balls in traffic. Judging by Strong's film he can high point the ball in traffic as well.

I keep seeing that Strong is slow. 4.44 40 is slow? Maybe its not a burner and I get that some people play slower than their 40 time, but I also hear everyone saying he needs to learn to run routes better. Part of me wonders if that's why he plays slower than his 40 time... As he gets the routes down, is it possible that will help him "play faster"?

I don't think he's slow, but many (me included) wanted a true burner

Best thing I see about him is his catching. Which isn't bad for a wr.

Needs work on route running pretty badly.

But his catching/ball location looks like it could be a great, great asset. Doesn't need a lot of space to make catches and can make catches from a bunch of different angles and he snaps to the ball. If he becomes a good route runner I think you have yourself a solid to really wr. Throw in a great qb and improved route running and he could be really good to great.

As is he looks like he can contribute though because he looks like the type to win most 50-50 balls. Good positioning, timing and hands when the ball is in the air.

He reminded me a lot of a poor man's aj or a faster Bolden the little i saw. He's a long strider and takes time to build speed. I wouldn't describe him as quick at all more fast. He's an outside guy...not a smaller slot. I would've been upset with him at 16...in the 3rd round im thrilled.
