NFL Drops Blackout Rule

We needed this rule overturned back in the 80's. There's no telling how many Oiler games I missed on tv because of this.

The rule was conceived back when the league depended on ticket sales rather than television rights as its major source of revenue. But the league's broadcast rights are now worth about about $5.1 billion a year, making the NFL the most profitable professional sports league. And its broadcasts dominate TV ratings.

Still, the league had been reluctant to drop the rule, especially as more fans prefer to watch games at home on big-screen TV's, rather than going to games in person.

In 2010, there were 26 blackouts. Last season, there were none. That came after 2012 when the league eased restrictions for tickets sold.

Kinda moot now.

If they want people to show up to games, maybe they should lower ticket prices. Corporations are buying up tickets which prices out the average fan from attending.

If the NFL wants more people to go to the game then they need to drop ticket prices.

The games are selling out. People are mingling in club levels (or around the stadium with 8000 TVs hung everywhere) or wasting tickets. Not going to get a price reduction until sales decline.
