Andre Johnson released - cut by Colts - signs with Titans

You can't pay someone 16 million a year to play 12 games a season. The best ability is availability. You don't think you can replace 900 yds and 3 TD's? I love the guy but football is a business. The best to ever play receiver didn't finish with SF.

Just 1 season prior he put up 1400 yards, could it be who was throwing him the ball, cause all i know is he looked damn good playing with Mallet and Keenum last season.

Very good points. And telling fans they don't have any heart for seeing Andre' leave is also bunk. We have not heard the whole story. I know him holding out last year left a sour taste for McNair. Andre' did drop some big time balls this past season, which he rarely used to do in his youth. He's also had one or two significant hits which forced him into the concussion protocol.

Why not give some younger guys a chance? We all need opportunities at our jobs and in our lives in order to grow.

It's time to trade-in the great car that has given us many wonderful miles.

Until you break down on the side of the road because that fancy new car has a 3$ sensor in it go out.

Not only has Andre Johnson entered the free agent market, but he has done so in epic fashion.

Shortly after being cut by the Houston Texans Johnson made public comments about the treatment he felt he received from the team.

"The funny thing is that when (a player) asks to be traded or something, people get on you about honoring your contract. But when you’ve done a lot for an organization and they feel like you get old, then they don’t have to honor their contract. I don’t get where they come up with this honoring your contract when you’re very very productive and you are doing great things for them. … I don’t know a lot of guys in the league that catch 85 balls and have almost 1,000 yards that that’s a down year for them. But you have a year like that and then it’s ‘well your old, we want to reduce your role,’ and all this stuff – I don’t get that. But that’s the nature of the business. Like I said, it doesn’t make sense. It doesn’t make sense to a lot of people. That’s just the way it is."

The comments make it clear Johnson could very well be motivated by revenge come next season, making the possibility of him signing with teams like Indianapolis, Tennessee or Jacksonville very enticing for both Johnson and NFL fans.

OK, let's not start making stuff up now. AJ has missed 1 game in the last 3 years.

And yes Rice left SF...when he was 3 years older than AJ...and had 2 more 1200 yd seasons afterwards at 38 and 39 years old.

It was a generality, not a specific statement. The guy is on the wrong side of 30. How many games has he gone into the locker to not return? That's still considered a game played, but it's also the reality of what is to come.

the fact they mention the Jags and Tacks discredits their opinion from the start.

The Texans' wasted this guy's career with mediocre QBs then put him out it pasture early.

They're statement today sounded like telling someone after the divorce, "you're my ex."

That was comments he made before he was released and they were posted here before he was released. Whoever you linked is making stuff up to get headlines. He also said, at the same time, that he had no ill feelings towards the Texans

That was comments he made before he was released...

He spoke those to Josina Andersen today...

http://www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1sl4sap

And you're right, he's not angry...
On if he is bitter: "Nothing bitter about it. It's the nature of the business. I had a feeling it was going to happen. When you are prepared for it makes it a whole lot easier."

But he did say this...
On his preference for his future team: "Wherever I go, I hope I can play with a great quarterback..."

Which seems to leave out TEN and JAX.

yeah I had posted it right before you, but I got it from Steph Stradley's retweet and she had a pic of convo so I took a pic of that... your link to twitlonger was better. And yeah he's due to play with a great QB

Maybe he can go somewhere and for the 1st time play with a QB who straight up gets selected to an initial probowl roster.

Think about that.

I guess I have gotten into the acceptance mode(well have no choice)

He will go into the Hall as a Texan. Amazing enough when considering the QBs he played with... I say go chase your ring AJ, you paid your dues. I wish it was with the Texans but not going to happen. Maybe one day he will sign the one day contract and retire as a Texan, but for now the Texans need that salary cap savings to build.

The one I am focusing on is JJ.. He needs help on the defense. He hides so many deficiencies that the Texans need to close that gap and get him some help

I think he deserves it, one who is voted in and not selected as an alternate or injury replacement

Farewell Dre, gonna miss you man! I will never forgot watching you blow up a line backer, and two DB's and plowing your way backwards into the end zone in Arizone years ago in person, in your prime you were unstoppable.

I wish Houston could have given you a couple more years of decent QB play over your career here. I wish Fat Albert wouldn't have single handedly destroyed your chances at a SB in a Texans uniform, had Shaub not had his foot mangled by Fat Ass the SB was yours to win at the height of your ability.

I remember watching games, and the only thing that made them worth watching was thinking you were gonna get the ball.

Your jersey is the last one I will probably ever buy, I will have to wait years to wear it again, if you make it to the HOF I hope you will accept the award as a Texan regardless of whatever has taken place the last two years.

I wished last years episode wouldn't have gone down like it did, but you are still one of my all time favorites, I wish you luck in everything you do except when you play the Texans. I wish the NFL made it possible for teams to keep the truly great players they draft while being able to balance the cap. Goodbye #80.

Players don't go into the HOF representing any one ballclub of note. No caps, no helmets, no jerseys. Matter of fact the bust of them has each team they played for listed on it. In chronological order. Dre will technically go in as a Texan, and he'll go in as a member of whatever team he plays for next year.

In terms of his speech I feel confidant the Texans having drafted him and made him a multi-millionaire, the fact that he calls Houston his second home, the time that will have passed, and the fact that he's a reasonable grown-up will see him look back on his time as a Texan with fond remembrance. That will be a hell of a day. For him and for Texan fans.

Capwise, maturitywise & all that other bullcrap... how much difference would it have been had we cut Jjo?

If we've "grown" as you say, wouldn't we have got rid of all three of Myers, Aj, & Jjo?

Don't think there are as many options to replace jjo as there are wr2. Getting rid of JJO may be the right move but I don't know. Rookie corners are a little more of a liability than rookie wr2s aren't they?

Yeah and JJo is in the last year of his contract so not as big a benefit in cutting him. Continuity in the secondary is as huge as it is on the OL

Farewell Andre! I enjoyed watching you play and I'm sorry it had to end this way here in H-town. Hope you get that championship ring. You deserve it!

I haven't had time today to read through this thread, so I'll just paste what I wrote on my Facebook page:

The photo below occurred on my birthday in 2010. Before the last play of the game in overtime, Matt Schaub told Andre Johnson, "Go up and get it. You're the best receiver in the league." The result was another game saved by Andre and a photo reminiscent of Muhammad Ali over Sonny Liston. That's the type of will that Andre put on the field for Texans fans every game. His passion was channeled into his work ethic and winning, and winning was channeled into his humility and class. Anyone who claims to be disillusioned with the egos and the business side of professional sports can look to Andre as the ideal character for elite athletes.

Thank you to Andre Johnson for giving Houston fans something to be proud of after six years without a football team, and during the twelve years of an inconsistent one. He may not have gotten the ring he deserved, but he's earned infinite more respect than most who wear one.

Great post man! Repped!

I still remember that play vividly. It was classic AJ, up there with the TD against Arizona

Does that mean I have to change my avatar?

Lol, nah. Just like fan's that are sure to be wearing AJ #80 jerseys at NGR for years to come I see nothing wrong with honoring a guy that's been the face of the Texans for years. If nothing else, I will be inclined to change the "Got AJ? message below my avatar, though. :D

The only two Texans jerseys I own with numbers on the back have #80 on it. This is the exact reason I don't like to own jerseys with numbers attached. I figured AJ was the exception to the rule. :texflag:

Without question the greatest Texans player in franchise history.

Will be intrigued what kind of deal he gets, if/when he gets picked up.

Sorry dude but we bought #80 jerseys and cheered for him for a loooooong time. We didn't cheer for executives or front office staff members. This is also entertainment and a lot of people spend money on this business so yeah we are going to feel sad on a man we watched MAKE this team and at times be the only bright spot on this team.

Out of darkness, into the light. It's all about new jersey sales...

I would not be surprised to see him in Denver. He seemed unhappy from the moment Kubiak was fired.

yes, but it wasn't because Kubiak got fired... it was going thru yet another 2-14 season. And he knew what was coming because of his contract

I totally expect him to go to Denver to play under Kubiak in an offense he knows and get balls thrown to him by Peyton Manning.

That offense in Denver will look quite a bit different with Peyton Manning under center .... Sure , they'll run the ball a lot & play action but you wont be seeing Manning on bootlegs very often. Kubiak will have to change his offense to fit Manning's skills / abilities.

Most Sundays I was able to yell Andre MF'ING Johnson. Thank you for your time here. See you when you sign that one day contract to retire as a Texan. Until then...

If Andre winds up in Denver he will be the third option in the passing game. I will even go further to say that he will be the first option in the first game only so that Kubiak can make an asinine school-yard point.

Weak sauce pairs well with chicken.

Funny how no one is clamoring for the Myers thread to be moved... :kitten:

Maybe because it fell off the radar days ago.

Technically none of the cut players, free agents no longer under contract with the Texans, or potential signings (Hoyer) should have a thread in this section.

But hey, I guess rules are made to be broken ...

It's likely Kubiak won't be running his offense for a couple of years. He made a statement indicating that he'll let Manning do his thing. I can see Andre ending up in Atlanta where Kyle Shanahan is installing it.

Those are some nice options for Andre. Surprised the Broncos aren't interested, though.

Sure he could get a job there.
Does Andre consider Miami a contender ? I dunno, but with it bing his hometown that place is much more likely than ATL IMO.
