So you're saying we reach for the third best QB which you can probably get in the fourth (Petty) with our 1-16 just because there is a need at QB. That somehow drafting him in the first makes him superior to that same player in the fourth.

Tampa Bay
Tennessee
Washington
NYJets
Chicago
St. Louis
New Orleans
Miami
Kansas City
Philadelphia
Arizona

It wouldn't surprise me if three or four of these teams addressed their QB needs in the first two rounds of the draft.

There's no guarantee that Petty would drop to the 4th because some seer believes he will. QBs are in a class of their own.

This is a more realistic list than the one you posted.

So you don't think Chicago will be looking for a QB in the draft? 2nd round might be too high, they did get David Fales last year... but they're talking about not having faith in Jay Cutler & all that, I would think they'd be looking for his replacement soon.

Drew Brees has been in the league 15 years, it may be time to find his replacement.

If I were Miami I'd want to push Tannehill. Maybe I'm stretching a bit. If they extend his contract this year... I'd take them off my list.

You're right, Kansas City has Arron Murray. I think he's going to have a very good NFL career as a starter, so yeah, they're not going to take a QB in the 1st or 2nd.

But I wouldn't be surprised if four QBs are off the board by the time our 2nd round pick comes.

Jon Gruden scouts 5 QBs

  • Grayson
There’s a lot of parts of Colorado State’s system that I recognize, unlike a lot of college football that’s running up-tempo, no-huddle, spread-option football. There’s some principles at Colorado State that will serve Grayson well. He can run it. He can audible. He can get you out of trouble with his legs. He’s a dark horse in this class.
  • Hundley
Hundley helped put UCLA football back on the map. They were in trouble before he arrived. Really, what he did running and passing, taking over the city of Los Angeles the last three years, is a great accomplishment. And, for the Bruins to finish as a top-10 team, that puts an exclamation point on his career. A talented guy.
  • Petty
Petty might have the best arm talent in this draft. Last year Derek Carr came to town and put on an aerial display. I would be surprised if Petty isn’t that guy this year. Stereotyped in the Baylor offense, but he’s different. He’s a great passer. He’s a finisher. I love finishers. Gray shirt, red shirt, waited his time. He’s physically and mentally ready to go. I like Petty.
  • Mariota
Mariota is special in a lot of ways. He’s a dynamic dual-threat on the field and he is humble -- no-nonsense, full of character off the field. 4.52 is what he ran (at the combine). He competes like crazy. I just think he has a lot of 'can’t miss’ qualities.
  • Winston
Not many people do what Jameis Winston did: first year as a starter winning a national championship, only one loss in his two years as a starter. He’s got great charisma. He’s polarizing for some people but he’s a rare talent. I can’t wait to spend some time with him. I coached the Bucs with a Florida State quarterback named Brad Johnson. Things worked out all right.

One other thing on Texans, teams needing young QBs: Some will look at '16 class (Christian Hackenberg, Connor Cook, etc) choose to be patient.

Two words. Cardale Jones.

I watched some tape on Hundley. I like a lot of things but his tendency to duck and run is worrying. Puts his head down and relies on his feet to move the chains instead of using his feet to buy time to throw.

I don't think there is a QB in this draft that isn't going to take some work before they take the field. Winston may be the closest to NFL ready, but even he is going to need to learn the lingo, & about protections, & reading NFL defenses.

Mechanics wise, Winston is closer, but still a far cry from where he needs to be.

But someone has to be drafted in the first right?

If I were looking for a QB in this draft... say I was Tampa Bay, or the Jets, or St. Louis, I would not pass on top ten talent at other positions to satisfy my QB needs. & if that means someone else drafts Mariota/Winston, so be it. Doubley so if I've got Glennon, Geno or Mettenberger on my roster.

I'd try to trade back into the bottom of the first before I use a top 10 pick on one of these QBs. Or, I'll gladly take Petty, Hundley, Grayson, or Sean Mannion in the second.

Yeah pressing it gets you David Carr, Joey Harrington, Mark Sanchez, Johnny Manziel etc...

Build your team until you can get a solid Roesthliberger or Rivers and make an immediate impact.

But you ain't gonna have much impact until then. Unless you get lucky with a Schaub, Mallett type

Tender a qualifying offer to Keenum. Wait for Petty in the fourth, though a trade up to an early fourth might be required. Keep Fitz without extending him.

Go into Camp with Fitz, Keenum, Savage and Petty. Fitz and Savage have the inside track, but Keenum and Petty push them to stay there.

Rivers actually sat for the first 2 seasons, playing and learning behind Brees. Like Rodgers, don't really know what kind of QB he would have been if thrown into the fire immediately.
