All encompassing Rick Smith thread

I remember when he said there was "no way" that Matt Schaub, at the time a restricted free agent with the Falcons, would end up with the Texans.

"Restricted free agents don't get traded," he declared.

Wrong.

Sources lie. But who is lying when there are conflicting stories? Sometimes both.

I honestly don't think given his successes with overall PR, UDFAs and his late training camp/early season FA pick ups, he is going to be sent anywhere in the next season.

Unless he cuts Andre Johnson or Arian Foster or has another major FA bust, but we really don't have the cap room to go for another big FA and cutting A. Johnson or Foster would be insane.

SIAP, but here's McClain's new joke of a Pravda article. BS warning...

I thought this was interesting since we get so little information on how the powers are divided over there.

Smith had to learn what kind of players O’Brien wanted for his offensive and defensive systems. Then Smith had to make sure his personnel people understood what the new coaches wanted in the draft and free agency.

This tells me that OB isn't making these picks like we assume that Kubiak and Wade did. This is RS swinging and missing on players that would fit in OB's system.

The following quote really pisses me off.

Considering the meager contributions the Texans received from their top three draft choices – outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney, guard Xavier Su’a-Filo and nose tackle Louis Nix III – it’s almost like they will have extra picks in the first three rounds.

Using this logic, Am0bi Ok0ye was an extra 1st round draft pick here for 4 years.

Smith is aware of reports in the national media that he’s being removed as general manager and replaced by someone who worked with O’Brien at New England.

“I don’t pay any attention to any of that,” Smith said.

Smith has the support of owner Bob McNair and vice chairman Cal McNair, who was quick to shoot down those reports.
It's going to take O'Brien to dislodge Smith. Over time, as he earns his bona fides, I expect OB to facilitate Smith's being put out to pasture. Won't be easy because Smith = family to the McNairs. We'll see.

The following quote did get me thinking that maybe OB has his eye on somebody in NE but maybe they're waiting for the Patriots to get knocked out of the playoffs before they make a move on him.

But then I snapped back into reality. It might be a consideration in hiring coaches, but I doubt it is for GM's.

I think Smith's already on a clock. As the 2014 draft begins to yield less and less like previous years that pasture gets closer and closer. It's a shame I think we'll be stuck with one more offseason of him.

I could see them giving Smith some kind of title/position that removes him from player evaluations but still allows him to be BFF with Cal.

Looks like McClain needs a little help on his compensatory draft info. McCain was waived by Houston. Tate, Braman, Sharpton, and Mays probably didn't play enough in 2014 to merit a comp pick.

Now that Cal is COO, I expect Rick to be named VP of Football Operations

The writing is on the wall at this point. Rick Smith will be "promoted" and BOB will get his guy.

I believe that McNair is inclined to enabling his coaches with everything they think they need for success. The chasm between Casserly and Capers was a harsh lesson, and was the reason why McNair deferred to Kubiak's recommendation for a compatible GM. It seems that the same pattern is occurring now.

Well we all know what it means if pancakes stated it emphatically... :hurrah:

Right. It means he should stop calling himself a reporter & should try something more descriptive... like fanboi

I guess we say hello to Rick in the unemployment line now.

Not when you're a loyal yes man.

Best the fans can hope fpr is that his incompetent a** gets kicked upstairs. You know, where he will be closer to cal so he wont have to be so worn out be the time he gets to Cal's office. So he can kiss Cal's a** properly.

McClain has been emphatic about Smith staying on as GM. He refuted LaCanfora's report in borderline confrontational manner on 610 a couple of days ago. His twitter feed has been equally as adamant about it. Either he knows something, he's way out of the loop, or he's being used by someone on the inside of the organization to get out the message they need.

yeah, McClain has been emphatic about it, but not enough to bet eating a newspaper over it.

So how truly convicted is he to his news? :hmmm:

I'm sure his source is Rick Smith, himself. I would guess Lance's source is Bill O'Brien (via John Harris). Might be a bit of a power struggle on Kirby? Can't wait for the Hard Knocks episodes!

lol! My gut reaction to Hard Knocks was "hell no" due to potential distractions.

That said, if it happened, I'd have to get HBO for a couple of months just see see a tiny bit of light shed on a process that has long been hidden from public view.

I figure it would drive them nuts on Kirby to have film crews trying to gain access to their inner operations. For that reason alone, a part of me is all about "bring it on!". :D

Just stubled across this from nfl.com about the Eagles' situation which seems to echo closely what has gone on in Houston.

Can't copy and paste any parts of it as I'm on the phone, but it's very interesting to see how it's been interpreted over in Philly as being a better job title and salary with less responsibility. Very similar to how the move has been viewed on this board.

Also interesting at the bottom the article states that the past shows a lack of success from such moves, but offers no evidence to back that up.

I guess if you have one single vision operating the tiller, much like in Plato's ship where you wouldn't navigate by the Stars through democratic vote. Then again I suppose if that one vision is flawed then the checks and balances could send things horribly awry.

Of course if you want to speak of historical success in the NFL, you'll find that 31 of 32 teams fail every season anyway so maybe that is flawed?

Just biting my tongue. Cak is on a rampage with those he disagrees with.

I'm here to learn about the game. I don't get chance to talk face to face with people about football and so this is really my only resource. Sometimes I'll post things I think I see knowing they may be proved totally wrong because otherwise I'll never learn anything.

I also completely understand the polarized viewpoints this forum tends to bring with it.

Now I'm the type who will wholeheartedly support the team and all of its decisions because come Sunday night in September I won't give a flying ffff who decided to draft that particular NT, or what thought process went into drafting some no-name pizza boy with our first round pick a few years ago, only that we win the battle on the day.

It's still interesting to look at parallels with other teams and question whether we're headed in the right direction during the offseason.

I get the impression most on here would prefer to believe anyone except Rick Smith has final say in the war room, I think the Texans sit right about mean average in drafting first round talent over the tenure of Smith. Where we have stumbled has been in keeping hold of the mid-range talent like Quin and Barwin.

I'll believe in Bill O'Brien whole heartedly for now. I can't see much wrong with the thought process behind last years draft, and hope that the injury bug sorts itself out with those guys. Meanwhile the record last season gave me hope for the future despite the main resources for change essentially having been mothballed for a year due to the injuries.

A fair and balanced post. What I would like to know is who ordered contracts to be structured in a way that Barwin/Quin etc... couldn't be retained? Isn't that a large part of a GM's job? It seems like there has been a change in the way contracts are being structured since BOB has joined the org. See: Watt's contract vs AJ's contract structure.

If Smith is the median in the draft then there as some mentally challenged GM's out there.

I think you are just seeing Smith & Olsen evolve with the market. Early contracts were big signing bonuses, small amount of GTD salary. Then they transitioned into the mid range SB & and use of Option Bonus in 2nd year (Cushing & Joseph). Then moved to the more GTD salary, small SB, and strategic use of roster bonus on Watt's deal. Watt's roster bonus wasn't fully GTD at signing, which is why it wasn't pro-rated (but can be prior to Mar 24).

You can see the trend moving this way with both the Texans and other NFL teams. It is a copy cat league.

Wish we were the team that other teams followed when it came to contract negs.

Yeah. That was all there was to it. I've got some beachfront property in Arizona for you.

You remind me of someone... can't put my finger on it yet... but you remind me of someone. Someone we haven't seen in a good while.

Just wanted to let everyone know that Rick Smith still sucks, and the Texans won't win anything of significance with him running the team. He should have been gone when Kubiak left.

Haven't you heard? O'Brien has last say in the draft.

I have the feeling that if O'Brien wanted Smith out and "his guy" in, it would already have happened.
