It’s time to get back to the basics. Physicality is the name of the game. Tougher hard nosed teams like the Seahawks are beatiing down softer teams that rely on finesse. When he was hired bOb talked a good game about wanting a tougher, meaner, physical squad. In the 2014 draft, he used picks to become that more physical type of team. This mock continues that approach.
1. Jalen Collins, CB/S, LSU, 6’2, 195lbs, 4.48
An excellent DB prospect from DB U. He is a physical defender and would be a handful for many receivers. Could play as corner, nickel corner, or as a Free Safety. An instant starter at 3 positions.
2. Danny Shelton, NT/DT, Washington , 6’2. 339lbs, 5.29
A nasty 3-4 requires a mean NT up front who can neutralize the run and help to collapse the pocket. Shelton can certainly do that. He who bring a much needed physicality that has been lacking from the NT spot. Steps in right away and forms a formidible rotation with LNIII.
3. Paul Dawson, ILB, TCU, 5'10, 240lbs, 4.69.
Like Reggie Ragland(my initial selection until I was correctly alerted that he is heading back to school), Dawson is a great ILB prospect. He has a high motor and flies around the field. A little undersized, but could be a Zach Thomas type LB. A good hard nosed player who could start immediately.
4. Tony Lippett, WR, Michigan State, 6’3, 185lbs, 4.57
A good size receiver with good hands and crisp route running. Not the fastest, but should be able to be a quality #2 receiver. Will fight for the ball and has some quality blocking ability.
5. Tyler Lockett, WR/KR/PR, Kansas State, 5’11, 4.41
A superb athlete. Would be a great weapon as a slot receiver, kick returner, and punt returner. It is clear that Martin is not cutting it in the slot receiver or returner positions. Drafting Lockett gives bOB options and that is the key to his offense. Is not afraid of going over the middle and would be a great weapon out of the backfield.
6. Louis Trinca-Pasat, DE, Iowa, 6’2, 290lbs, 4.98
The need for a formidable DL continues and LTP would certainly help. While his linemate Carl Davis got all the headlines, LTP was more disruptive. He did a good job holding his line and was able to get more pressure on the QB than the more well known Davis. LTP is an under the radar type guy who has a good motor and would fit into the overall team dynamic of being a more physical team.
7. A.J. Johnson, ILB, Tennessee, 6’2, 245lbs, 4.71
Yes, I am aware he has a few character red flags. BUT, he is a very high level Linebacker. He is athletic enough to play all 3 downs, he can sack the QB, is a force in the middle of the field, and can chase down runs. He is aggressive, mean, and the type of player the LB group needs. Like Vontaze Burfict he likely plummets here for off the field reasons. Let’s be smart like the Bengals and take him before someone else does.
