Senior Bowl

Another all-star game, another week of lackluster quarterback play. Throughout the week the quarterbacks in Mobile were missing easy throws, throwing interceptions, dropping snaps and bobbling handoffs.
I realize this is not the greatest QB group ever assembled at an all star game. But even if there were blue chip guys here, they would likely struggle more than their tape would suggest. QB is the most difficult position to play and that will show in a short week like this. Especially when most (if not all) of these guys are having to play the position in a completely different way. I think the scouts and coaches are looking at these QBs tools, how they respond to coaching, and as importantly, their poise. How they handle themselves this week will go a long way in regards to where they are selected in the draft.

I could be wrong, but I saw fewer and fewer coaches (positional, coordinators and head) at the Senior Bowl this year. Usually first exposure to prospects

O'Brien and Texans were there. Just interviewed on SiriusXM.

The South offensive line was the star of the first scoring drive. Very athletic.

Ameer Abdullah looks great as a 3rd down RB.

Reminds me of Jahvid Best before the injuries. So elusive and explosive in the open field. He could make two guys miss in a phone booth. It's incredible. He also has some of the best balance I've seen in a long time.

I've said it all year long and I'll keep saying it...I don't understand the Sammie Coates hype. He's not a 1st round talent. He's a track star, not a football player. Looks exactly like Heyward-Bey to me. Some of the worst hands I've seen from a prospect this year and he can only run 2 routes.

I don't know he's ever gonna win in the NFL. But I love Gus Bradley's attitude.

Don't think Johnson will be there in the 4th after the week he's had. I've heard Le'Veon Bell comparisons and I can totally see that.

I'm not a fan of Abdullah whatsoever but he's making me rethink it. He has been very impressive today.

I scouted his game against Miami and he made that defense look silly on multiple occasions. There were 3-4 plays he made that didn't look real.

He and Duke Johnson are both guys who fit the new breed of offense in the NFL and will be bigger contributors now than they would have been 10 years ago.

None of the QBs look that great but Bennett looks terrible, as expected. Accuracy is all over the place and he looks to run at the first sign of pressure.

Diggs just totally set him up on that one.

Looks like Sproles to me.

Bennett has a NFL arm.

Even with the int he's looked like the QB in the game.

I want to see more of Grayson.

Bennett has thrown two picks and had two others hit DBs square in the hands.

Bennett and Petty have been the more mobile guys, but both have been inaccurate and turned the ball over. Bennett has been way off on some of his throws and Petty was very gun shy over the middle after his INT. He also had Hardy wide open in the end zone early in the game and threw the ball about 4 yards out of bounds.

Petty is locking in on guys and not going through progressions. He's had about four plays where he was running around waiting for his target to get open when he already had a guy open and just wouldn't look off the first guy.

He also did have that bad miss on the sure TD pass that he overthrew. And on the INT his TE was wide open in the seam and Petty throws it over the wrong shoulder right to a DB.

You see the physical ability but the mental part is just so far behind where it should be.

Petty is not going through his progressions. He's staring down his first read and if it's not open then he runs around until someone gets open. Saw this a lot when he was at Baylor. He rarely had to go through his progressions because his 1st or 2nd option was almost always wide open. If the defense was allowed to blitz today they would be eating him alive right now.

Haha beat me to it bah007

Grayson has looked the best to me so far but he barely got to play. Hoping he gets to come back in.

Can David Johnson return punts?

If so he moves up my board.

I see him going in the 3rd due to the devaluing of RB's and the fact that he is a small school guy.

Why wonder when a guy like Tyler Lockett can be the slot,kr,and pr. He's a dynamic antonio brown type of guy.

I like Lockett a lot too, if he's available in the 4-5th rd range. I also like WR's McBride/Crowder in the same range.

The reason I like Johnson is I like versatile skill position players. For instance If Johnson can KR/PR I would rate him over Cobb. Being a former WR I suspect Johnson could handle those duties.

Lockett will be pushing the 3rd. His production and then his combine is going to put him there. He has special qualities that the texans could use as a slot and returner. Jmo

Agreed

Did you watch the Senior Bowl?

What did you think of Johnson and who impressed you?

This question is for everybody.

2015 Senior Bowl: North vs. South
While it is the practice that has the bigger impact, game time represents an opportunity for players to showcase to a large watching audience what they can do. In that regard, this Senior Bowl saw some players stand out for good reasons, and others bad.

The game itself was largely decided up front. Where the North team really won the line of scrimmage, with their defense especially impressive. Let’s take a look at some of the key performances.

North - Performances of Note

Carl Davis, DT: +4.2

Breakdown: Coming off a good week of practice, Davis continued his strong end to the year to help build his draft momentum. He’s not the best when you get two bodies on him, with him often unable to anchor and pushed back, but he has a knack for getting upfield, destroying cutback and playside lines on outside zone runs while really having his way with Shaquille Mason when left one-on-one.

Signature Play: Gets upfield on the block of Dillon Day with 3.50 to go in Q1, getting a big tackle for a loss in the process.

T.J. Clemmings, OT: -6.0

Breakdown: By all accounts this week hasn’t gone well for Clemmings. Touted by some as having the skillset to succeed on the left side of the line, he only showed that for all his physical prowess he remains raw with a long way to go on his developmental journey. Flipping between left and right tackle didn’t help, but too often he had too much trouble with speed off the edge. While he got beat for five hurries, there was also a hit on a play nullified by penalty and four other occasions he was beat only for the QB to get rid of the ball quickly.

Signature Stat: Including the Shrine game, only Cameron Clemmons allowed more pressure from the offensive tackle spot.

Tyler Varga, HB: +3.4

Breakdown: A nice cameo from Varga who showed the kind of versatility running routes out of the backfield, makes plays rushing the ball and lead blocking to catch the attention over some more illustrious backs. Didn’t need an awful lot of help from his blocking to fully maximize the yardage he got.

Signature Play: His second touchdown run was a real nice one. With 1.53 to go in the game, he aims off left guard but cuts to avoid a tackle, bursts through the right B gap before cutting inside defenders to get to the end zone.

South - Performances of Note

Markus Golden, DE: +2.6

Breakdown: All season long has demonstrated an ability to generate pressure without selling out in the run game, and the Senior Bowl was no different. Made T.J. Clemmings look anything but a first-round pick, with too much speed to the edge. Helped his stock in this game.

Signature Stat: Finished sixth of all 4-3 defensive ends in the Power 5 with 46 combined sacks, hits and hurries during the regular season.

Shaquille Mason, OH: -5.9

Breakdown: Taken from the comfort of Georgia Tech’s triple-option-based attack, Mason produced the kind of display that ensures any team picking him up will likely not be expecting an immediate contribution. He was quiet initially but it all went wrong in the fourth quarter with a horrible drive that saw him lose his battle on nearly every passing play, culminating with him giving up five hurries.

Signature Stat: Only pass blocked on 246 occasions during the 2014 NCAA season.

Geneo Grissom, LB: +0.7

Breakdown: Grissom looked out of place as a conventional linebacker, struggling to find his place in zone and not having the kind of closing speed to make plays when given an angle on a receiver out of the backfield. But he looked a lot more comfortable with his hand down and had a good sequence of plays against T.J. Clemmings who couldn’t stop him turning the corner.

Signature Plays: Watch the last three offensive plays of the third quarter as he gets the better of Clemmings on all of them.

PFF Game Ball

There were some nice efforts from the running backs and no performance stood out to any degree that it overshadowed the rest, but Carl Davis gets the nod for his efforts.

I didn't see a lot of 1st round talent. If there is an impact player out of this game, it's Abdullah. What he can do as a RB in the passing game is special.

Three smaller school guys that stood out to me were Dezmin Lewis - WR, Lynden Trail - OLB, and Nick Boyle - TE. These guys look the part and flashed a lot of ability, even if they didn't always know what they were doing. If you're looking for guys with upside on Day 3, they fit the bill.

The RBs were very good, as a whole. Really speaks to the depth of this class throughout. All looked solid in the passing game, as well.

The downfield passing wasn't great. Not a lot of separation from the receivers, and not much accuracy from the QBs. I would have liked to see Phillip Dorsett play.

All told, a lot of solid mid round guys. Not much flash. Like most drafts, it's the underclassmen that will make the draft.

Easily the most impressive QB today although I cringed when he missed that seam to the TE.

Agreed. I did not watch that much college football this year. However, from what I have seen, only Winston and possibly Hundley appear to be better NFL prospects than Grayson.

I did not watch the game yesterday but recorded it and will watch it later. But I think I heard a SB official say they had more rejections by invitees this year so the trend continues for the top prospects to skip the game if they are highly rated, which I'm sure they are doing on their agents advice, and that makes perfect sense.
Andybody notice or hear if Billy or anybody else from the Texans was @ the Senior Bowl or in Moble this past week?

Both O'Brien and Rick Smith did interviews on Sirius/XM radio from Mobile. O'Brien said he was mainly sitting in on the player interviews, and will be more active with questions at the combine. Rick Smith talked about what a great GM he is.

This is a good synopsis.

Two small school guys that impressed me are Trail and David Johnson. Both are 3-4th rd guys. IMHO

Big school guys that impressed were Collins (1st) a 10 yr starter. Davis, that guy would look awesome on the DL with Watt.

The guy that didn't look good that I hope Smith drafts was Crowder. He had trouble fielding punts, but is a perfect slot guy.

32 to Watch in the 2015 Senior Bowl

Ali Marpet, OT, Hobart
Who? To be honest I know next to nothing about this kid. He earned a Senior Bowl invite out of Division III Hobart College, which is pretty incredible...

Man I like this guy's vibe...

Reminds me of Munchak/Matthews demeanor. Man crush.
