2015 Compensatory Picks?

I don't know how reliable this site is, but this guy is predicting possibly 4 comp. picks for the Texans, 1 fifth rounder and 3 sixth rounders. If that came true it sure would help with depth issues at several positions and maybe we find a diamond in the rough. Anyone else have an opinion on 2015 comp. picks or care to guess what we might get?

If/When we lose K Jackson that will easily land a 4th IMO. As for the rest of it, I have no idea, I thought we were in bad shape w/ regards to cap and gonna lose a lot, but articles are being written about us being major players in free agency and people are correcting me telling me we will more than adequate cap space so my opinion is obviously on hold until I see what we do in resigning all of our key free agents.

IF we were to lose KJ to FA we wouldn't get a comp. pick for him until the 2016 draft if at all.

There were some disclaimers that were included.

In addition, the cutoff between the 5th and 6th round could impact the value of players around the $4-4.5M APY range. Those players that would be relevant to the compensatory picks would be the following:

  • Antonio Smith (HOU to OAK, $4.5M APY)
  • Earl Mitchell (HOU to MIA, $4M APY)

  • If Andrew Gardner does not qualify and Kendrick Lewis does qualify, Houston will not get a 6th for Joe Mays.
  • If Ben Tate does not qualify, Houston will not get a 6th for him.

So it appears the Texans will get from 2-4 picks, at the end of the 5th or 6th rounds.

I thought first criteria was if we signed a starter it cancelled out a starter we lost? For example, Pickett cancels out Mitchell and Lewis cancels out Antonio Smith. I also would think that Simon, Morris and D Johnson (oh I hate to say this) eliminate any lower picks. I sure hope I am wrong. I'd love to have four comps and can start trading our own 5th and 6th now. lol

Lewis would qualify as an offset as he was a free agent signed during the stipulated period. In a nutshell, only players signed as free agents during the off season can qualify to offset a loss. Picket was signed during the season, as was Simon, and Morris and Johnson were waiver claims, so none of those four should be potential offsets to any potential compensatory picks the Texans might be awarded.

If we signed another teams free agent during the proper time, this would be true. But I think we signed players outside of the FA window on an as needed basis. I also don't think being a starter is a factor. It's the salary.

Two is good but 4 would be great. Just hope they don't blow it like the 3rd rounder they got for losing Mario. Sam Montgomery! :thumbdown What a waste!

Someone posted a lot of info about comps last off season and I cannot remember who. I may have a pm stored but I was pretty certain productivity also played a part. For example, Ed Reed had sizable salary but no productivity so would not count. Other info was helpful if only one FA against us (Lewis). As we lost starters in A. Smith, Tate and Earl Mitchell, I am still seeing a higher comp than a 5th.

edit: found this but not read it again.

I found some info on compensatory picks last year with AAV ranges for the picks and this was the matrix for 2012. These ranges can change, but we could have anywhere from a 3, 5,5,6 to a 3,6,7,7.

3 - $6.5/$7 million and greater
4 - $5 to $6.5/$7 million
5 - $4 to $5 million
6 - $2.5/2.75 to $4 million
7 - $1 to $2.5/2.75 million

Compensatory Pick Requirements:

Players must be signed before June 1st in order to affect comp picks
Signing bonuses can be up to 65k without effecting the comp picks.
Players over 10 years accrued no longer count against comp picks.
Players must sign for more than their veteran minimum to nullify other comp picks.

You know, any pick can be blown. That's why having extra picks is so beneficial. Increases the odds of getting one right.

This would be why Reed didn't count in the compensatory formula. He was on the field enough. And really, it's the contracts that drives the compensatory formula much more than anything else. I think the original author got it right with 4 picks, but we'll see.

Yeah, I know. Being a "long-suffering" Texans fan I only have to look back at all our past draft picks. It's like they're playing "Russian Roulette!" :gun: Or throwing darts up on a draft board!

Speaking of "we'll see" when are the compensatory picks given out? Is it in March or April?

During the March owners meeting, which I believe is March 23.

2016 Compensatory Draft Picks Primer: What Can Teams Do To Prepare?
I’ve spilled plenty of pixels talking about how 2014’s free agency could affect the 2015 compensatory picks. But it’s also my intention to look toward the future, and how free agent decisions made in 2015 will affect 2016’s slate of picks. To kick this off, we should address some higher level questions: To what extent, if any, should teams alter their approach in free agency to increase their chances of compensatory draft picks? And which teams in particular should perhaps pay more attention than others to this aspect this year?

Hey, when do we get to know about these?

Found these projections.

http://overthecap.com/projecting-the-compensatory-draft-picks-for-2015/

1 5th
3 6ths

So when is the Compensatory Picks announcement made?

I think at the league meetings... March?

League Annual Meetings, Phoenix, Mar 22-25

Texans could've received 2016 comp picks for Daniels and Manning. Texans cut Daniels and re-signed Graham. Texans cut Manning only to re-sign him later eliminating any chance for a comp pick for Manning.

OTC: Compensatory Draft Picks Cancellation Chart
To add clarity to how the compensatory draft pick formula works, this page will contain a list of all qualifying Unrestricted Free Agents lost and gained by each team, and illustrate which players are paired together for cancellation. Players that are projected to earn their former team a compensatory pick are highlighted in their former team’s colors.

Please note that this chart does not include potential “net-value” compensatory picks for teams that lose and gain an equal amount of UFAs, nor does it account for compensatory picks that may not be awarded due to falling below the 32-pick limit or exceeding the maximum of four per team...

Thanks will be goof for two drafts from now but I will probably forget. Plus we will probably cancel out Brooks with a FA we get.

Last Call On The 2015 Compensatory Pick Projections
Sometime during the NFL’s Annual Meeting next week (probably on Monday), the official announcement of the 2015 compensatory draft picks will be released. It will be that moment when we can finally see how well both my program and my human analysis did in projecting things correctly. The immediate goal will then be to reflect on the official results, and to see how future projections for 2016 and beyond can be improved...

I am using the extra 5th and three 6s! Hope he is correct.
Worst case scenario is (1) 5th and (1) 6th depending upon who becomes a qualified free agent. I think it will be the (3) 6ths, as is projected.

I am using the extra 5th and three 6s! Hope he is correct.

I hope he's right too. Just not gonna hold my breath! I'm guessing preliminary (informal schmoozing) meetings started today (Sunday, 22nd) and the real meetings will start tomorrow. Hoping we find something out then.

Spotrac is showing us with another 7th and I forgot but don't remember for ?
They have the Texans receiving a 2015 7th for Fitz, but it's actually a 2016 7th that could elevate to a 2016 6th.

Well, it's not too bad. Heck, the Texans had some of their better picks last year in the 6th rd with Pagan, Blue, and Prosch. So, maybe they'll do well again in the 6th.

Should be a lot of talent there in the 6th again this year
