Maxx Williams

Every year a TE creeps his way up the board. This year Maxx Williams will be that guy. He has great size, good speed and amazing hands. He is a solid blocker, but his ability to play the slot and create mis-matches is intriguing. He screams Gronk/Graham/Witten ability and I would love to finally have that at TE. With BoB running the ship, we need a legit TE who can move around and create nightmares for defenses. Will he be worth the 16th pick and would we take him? I hope so, because the production we got (or didn't get) from out TE's this year was pathetic!

Love Williams, but wouldn't pick him at 16. If he's there in the 2nd he would be my pick. (Doubtful)

I would rather pick Parker at 16 and sign Virgil Green in FA.

How much of this year's lack of production from the TE's was their fault and how much was it the QB's fault? It seemed to me when the TE's had their worst production was when Fitz was the QB. It started to get better when Mallet got in there, then quickly changed when he got hurt and they went back to Fitz. It started picking up again when Case was in there for the last 2 games.

I think BOB wants to get the TE's more involved and maybe drafting Maxx Williams might help, but they really need to get their QB situation settled this year. My guess is, since they already have 3 good TE's under contract, they will probably try to shore up other areas of need first. JMO.

Why Virgil Green?

He's a very good blocker who has enough speed to get down the seam. Green looked pretty good filling in while Julius Thomas was injured. Was Kaepernick's go to guy at Reno.

I think he has just started to tap his potential in the NFL.

4 years and 23 catches playing in one of the most prolific passing offenses doesn't scream potential. May be a good blocker, but is that worth anything more than the vet minimum on the market? I think the Texans need to set their sights higher.

Agreed about the vet min or maybe a little above.

He sat behind Tamme and Dreesen for 2 yrs. Then was used in Dreesen's blocking role for the last 2yrs while backing up Julius Thomas. A role that he excelled at.

An untapped talent.

Rated the 4th best run blocking TE last year. When he came out he was thought of as a receiving threat that needed to improve his blocking to get playing time. Problem was he was burried behind good veterans. When he got on the field his primary duty was to block.

I believe on the right team with the right opportunities he could really blossom. Because Of his stats he should be very affordable. At a reasonable price we have nothing to lose. He instantly becomes the best blocking and most athletic TE on the team. Checkout his combine numbers you will be impressed.

I did it for you. Checkout his vertical.

Virgil Green (TE5)
HT: 6'3" WT: 249LBS.
POSITION: TE
SCHOOL: Nevada
ARM LENGTH: 33 1/2"
HANDS: 9 1/4"
Overview
Green's an undersized, athletic, pass-catching tight end / H-back with big-play potential who doesn't bring much to the table as a blocker. Has good burst off the line and doesn't idle down in and out of his breaks but is susceptible to press coverage and doesn't exhibit great awareness against zone coverage. Possesses outstanding ball skills. Did not make a load of explosive plays in college but has a high ceiling here due to his speed and hands. Shows good effort as a blocker and could improve technique but lacks natural size and strength to excel in this area. Green could sneak into Day 2.
COMBINE RESULTS
40 YARD DASH: 4.64 SEC
BENCH PRESS: 23 REPS
VERTICAL JUMP: 42.5 INCH
BROAD JUMP: 130.0 INCH
3 CONE DRILL: 6.90 SEC
20 YARD SHUTTLE: 4.40 SEC
60 YARD SHUTTLE: 11.63 SEC
ANALYSIS

Green has great speed for a tight end. Explodes off the line and out of his breaks to gain separation. Has excellent hands. Plucks and snatches away from his frame and secures the football without losing speed. Can get up the seam and make the over-the-shoulder grab. Flashes potential as a second-level blocker. Outstanding intangibles.

Williams looks like a Steeler to me. I couldn't even tell you why but when I watched him play all I could think of is that he will be playing in Pittsburgh.

I wouldn't use a 1st on him because there are other positions we need to hit with that pick, but he is very deserving of some team using a 1st on him.

Why would this guy sign for vet min if he's "all that"?
Isn't that why we lost Dreesen because we weren't going to pay him what Denver did?

I say go with the rookie and let him beat out Fiedorowicz, Graham, Griffin, or Anthony Denham.

I'm bargain shopping, and depending on the price Green could be a bargain. The stats that Lucky stated above should make Green a bargain. You still would rather spend draft capital than get a bargain TE that is a proven blocker with more athletic ability than any TE in this draft and is still a young player?

BTW, Williams is a new version of Heath Miller.

Whether Green is a bargain or not depends on his asking price. That has yet to be seen. And if we MB peeps have seen potential in him I guarantee you that other teams, who are TE-poor, have their eyes on him too. Every team is looking for the next Gronk or Witten or Gates. I just don't think he'll be the bargain you're predicting he'll be.

I don't disagree with MOST of this, but I not agree with having "3 good TE's" on the team either. I think we made a huge error letting OD go, said it then and standing by it. We should have re-worked his deal and kept him. We need a dynamic pass catcher who can block and iMO Maxx could be that guy. Add in the fact he helps out the slot position immediately and our offense is off to the races. I think some of our bigger needs (on defense) need to be filled with some veteran free agents. I most definitely think a TE who can dominate the slot is a first round need.

OD is available again. I was surprised to hear he only signed a one-year deal up in Baltimore.

any bets on where he surfaces next?
:)

Maybe "good" was a little too strong. How about "3 OK TE's?"

I not totally against getting Maxx in the 1st round and I wouldn't be upset if they did. I just think they need to address other areas 1st. If they can address some of those needs in FA, great. That gives them more options in the draft.

Drafting a TE that early in this Draft would sure seem to indicate that Billy doesn't expect much at all out of Fido ?

I would hurl if we drafted a TE in the first.

TE was never on my bucket list either, but essentially he is a receiver. By far best in his class, think you can slot him right after Parker in pecking order so his top is 13 bottom 31. I think he will be more consistent & productive than Vernon Davis or Kellen Winslow both chosen 6th overall. Could go opposite as well to players he is more comparable both went much higher (hindsight) Jimmy Graham 3rd Gronk 2nd.
