Kubiak's Next Destination

They are almost as frustrating as the people who refuse to admit that Schaub is a washed-up has-been who is now a terrible QB.

When Ravens ran same play twice, Patriots figured it out
In a video breakdown on the Patriots’ website, Bill Belichick says the Ravens ran the play on their first drive of the game and had success with it, as the Patriots’ secondary couldn’t get to the ball in time.
...
But when the Ravens tried to run the same play in the third quarter, McCourty recognized it and got there in time to get the interception.

“One of the things you love about Devin McCourty is not making the same mistake twice or recognizing the play the second time around,” Belichick said. “Here the Ravens are just flipping the play over . . . it’s the exact same play, flipped over to the other side, and this time Devin goes around the tight end, [Owen] Daniels, gets into position to come in and cut off the over route and make the play. A great job of reconition, anticipation, seeing the play and making it.”

Belichick said that play by McCourty illustrated why it’s so dangerous in the NFL to run the same play twice in the same game, even if it worked the first time around.

“A lot of times I hear from the fans or sportscasters or whatever, ‘Why don’t you keep doing what was working? Why did you change it? Why didn’t you keep doing it?’ Well, that’s one of the resasons. It’s hard in this league to keep doing it against players like that. They see it the second time around an they nail it,” Belichick said...

I see some of you still bashing Kubiak, and I remember all the comments about his system was old and predictable. Funny thing is his system in Baltimore does not seem to be old and predictable at all. In fact the Ravens found themselves in the playoffs, and we found ourselves on the outside looking in.

It seems to me there is some crow to be eaten because Kubiak did not flop in Baltimore, but it's clear those of you to whom I refer are not man enough to admit you were wrong.

Seems like Kubiak announced too soon as the Denver job is now open with Fox and the Broncos parting ways. Perhaps with his recent health issues Kubiak is happy to remain an OC which carries less stress. Will be interesting to see if his stance changes now that the Denver HC job is open.

It has always, ALWAYS been said that Gary Kubiak is one hell of an OC, in fact he won 2 Super Bowls as an Offensive Coordinator, notice the key word there, Offensive Coordinator

Kubiak is expected to not flop as an OC, his system works, has a tendency to be too predictable but works non the less because that is the position he is great at...

as a Head Coach.... absolutely different story...

Kubiak feels obligated to stay where he is. He's not going to install his offense and jump ship after one year. He's too conscientious, and the loyalty he always displayed towards players and coaches is the polar opposite of that type of Lane Kiffin sleaziness. Besides, he may currently enjoy the health benefits of not having stress induced mini-strokes.

And the idea of Manning playing in a ZBS WCO is LOL.

I hope he honors his statement from Sunday night where he said he was staying in Baltimore

as a Head Coach.... absolutely different story...

in his first head coaching job he assembled a roster containing 8 probowlers, 2 d-roys, and d-mvp ... out of thin air. the probowl number doesnt include mario, demeco, leach and anyone else we'd already let go. then won the division twice. because of how well we were built the new first time coach with a bad offensive was able to win 9 games with fitzpatrick and 3 other quarterbacks.

compared to the coaches currently getting recycled (how is rex ryan getting another job?), only a disgruntled houston fan wouldn't want kubiak in charge.

Denver is his dream job. I'd be surprised if John didn't hire Gary. Like minds.

Elway just gave an interview where he talked about how he made a coaching change because he wasn’t happy with the status quo, and that he felt the team lacked fight and intensity. He talked about how the next coach has to have very high standards, and he wants someone who is competitive and aching to win a Super Bowl.

And yet, he wants to hire Gary Kubiak?

That makes zero sense.

Sounds like Elway really wants an a-hole type of offense coach that can build a tough team.

Kubiak, despite being a decent coordinator, is not that person.

The NFL really needs to stop with these retread, mediocre coaching hires.

By the same token, a head coach with 7 years of experience could only muster a 2 win season from that same roster.

61-64

I do not dislike Kubiak, but his time with the Texans was clearly done.

I can't tell without looking it up... is that Kubiak's record with the Texans, or Rex's with the Jets?

Kubiak regular season record as Texans HC. He was 2-2 in postseason, which is still better than Marvin Lewis.

I know he takes a lot of heat, but I tend think that Kubiak could still be a solid head coach under the right circumstances. He had a learning curve in Houston, not to mention inheriting a crappy roster when he got here.

Personally, I was never a big fan of Kubiak as HC. He seems like a great guy and he obviously has an incredible mind for offensive football. But I just never liked his mentality. Just a personal preference on my part.

Having said all that, he built a pretty damn good team here and doesn't get enough credit for that. And the only reason he is not still here is because he doubled down on Schaub when he should have been moving on instead.

So Elway's willing to trade Fox, Gase, and Del Rio (3 guys who will likely be NFL head coaches in 2015), for Gary Kubiak? I'd have a hard time selling that to the fans, the team, and especially, Peyton Manning.

Revisionist history much? The narrative on texans talk was that Kubiak's offense was outdated and the NFL had figured it out. People claimed he couldn't adapt and that he was washed up.

Well, I imagine there would be a couple of other coaches to go with Kubiak, so it's not exactly going to be a three for one trade, and there's some guys out there who would probably be pretty acceptable to the fans (Kyle Shanahan leaps to mind).

Also, Elway has said Peyton will be "consulted" throughout the process, so if Manning indicates the attitude towards Kubiak you suggest, I would imagine it will be strongly considered.

Finally, as concerned as Elway appears to be about getting Manning back (including the aforementioned consulting role), I would imagine he had some idea of how he would react to the coaching house cleaning before it was ever done, and clearly didn't view it as anything that would keep the pink slips from being dealt.

Looks like Gase and Del Rio would likely have been gone if they had stayed with Fox so really it would just be Kubiak for Fox.

I still don't see the fit with Manning. Elway, sure.

Yup.

The only way I see Kubiak working is if Elway is looking long term and plans to groom Manning's eventual replacement with Kubiak as mentor. Manning cannot have that many seasons left in him.

I think Kubiak is smart enough of an OC that he could figure out how to use Manning, especially since Manning is almost his own OC.

I don't know, Kubiak's design with Manning's adaptability might work out pretty good. Be interesting anywho...

Oh I think it would be a great combo if Manning would let Kubiak adapt his offense to Manning’s strengths. I just think Manning wants his offense.

I would think that this would be the biggest barrier to Kubiak going to Denver. Why the heck would he want to deal with that kind of hierarchy of power?

Manning's offense looked like hot garbage against a good defense during last year's Super Bowl.

And that might be why Manning would be willing to work with Kubiak... can can beat those defenses with his offense

Manning is statistically the best QB of all time as far as regular season numbers go. He has been to three SB's and won one. He dominated Kubiak's teams for what 8 years? Kubiak won maybe twice against Manning in that period of time. Why on earth would Manning change a thing for Kubiak who never even had a great history as a HC or with any of his offenses in Houston. Sure, some were good here and there, but the Texans never put fear in other teams from an offensive perspective. The Ravens sure as hell didn't either this year They barely made the playoffs and got in by who won and who didn't win in the last game of the season. Of course Manning wouldn't want to do that. He'd be crazy to, unless his body just broke down so badly that he was forced to be a game manager that had to hand the ball off most of the time.

Everyone is on this trend to call Manning done and act like he has nothing left, but they're just media sheep. They weren't saying that two weeks ago. Manning got an injury that he had to play through. It effected him. It happens. It is very likely that Manning could play another season and not have that type of injury effect him like it did at the end of this season.

Those who make decisions in the NFL clearly disagree with your assessment of Kubiak's offense.

I think Manning is capable of finishing out his contract strong if he has the desire to do so. So don't lump me in with anyone saying he's done.

Where are all of Kubiak's kinfolks who post here? Don't ya'll have some insight as to what the man is thinking? Damn, make some phone calls, call Granny or Aunt Sue and see what's shaking over at the Kubiak residence on Woods Edge Ln.

What's Kubiak's HC record?

Kubiak = HOF, HC.

Agreed

Are you talking about sitting on a lead for the entire 2nd half mentality?

This couldn't be more hilarious.

Coming from someone who makes some of the most hilarious posts on this site, your expert opinion on hilarious opinions is duly noted.

They are almost as frustrating as the people who refuse to admit that Schaub is a washed-up has-been who is now a terrible QB.

Do you have some evidence to back up your assertion, or just more expert QB evaluator opinion? Schaub didn't even get a chance to play, so I would say it remains to be seen whether he is, or is not washed up. Be that as it may, glad to see you are still stalking me and hanging on every word.

:bravo:

Like it or not, Kubiak proved all of those people wrong in his very first season in Baltimore. I imagine if he stays, it can only get better in the years to come.

Sounds like there's still a chace the BFFs reunite lol

Ravens coach John Harbaugh and OC Gary Kubiak plan to talk this AM about Broncos' interest in Kubiak. Denver request to interview him is in.

One of the expected turns of the latest coaching search has happened, now we have have to see the many impacts it could have.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Broncos have requested permission to interview Baltimore offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak for their vacant head coaching job.

I would assume since Elway said Manning would be involved in the coach selection that Manning has already given his blessing to this attempt.

I guess the speculation here that Manning and Elway has no interest in Kubiak can be put to rest?

Good luck to Kubiak if he decides to be head coach again. Never had any hate for the man and wish he would have led us to the promise land here.

I don't think anyone has questioned Elway's interest. Elway loves Kubiak. The question has been over Manning working with Kubiak.

Houston was on Manning's short list a couple years ago when we had Kubiak as our coach. I don't think Manning would have any problems now if he didn't then.

I was incredibly dubious about that rumor at the time. If Manning has signed off on this I guess it was true although still shocking to me.

Love to hear Manning’s thoughts on it as it appears to be a match made in hell.

Yeah, I don't understand where people get that Kubiak didn't want Manning. If he didn't he wouldn't want to coach Denver with Manning at the helm. I think it was more of a cap decision than a Kubiak decision.

So if we get some type of "request denied" response that would be Gary saying not at this time, thanks. I can't imagine him turning it down, but I haven't had an on-the-job stroke either.

Well there is denied by the Ravens and denied by Kubiak. He made clear before he was denying the interviews he was offered.

Going by this quote, it seems like Kubiak may be entertaining the offer.

i thought he had to be allowed the chance since it would be a promotion, and only lateral moves needed permission from the current team? or did i whiff on that one.

I wouldn't. Kubiak may have to convince the Ravens to let go. I doubt after a great deal of improvement they want to see him go.

While Kubiak may want the blessing of Harbaugh and the Ravens, if he chooses to pursue the Broncos HC job, they can't deny him that option (ie: the request for permission is merely a formality/courtesy that must be complied with, but is in reality meaningless).

That's what I thought but the request confused the issue. Then it is on Kubiak. I wonder if he made any non-binding promises to the Ravens when he got hired.

One of those two will likely follow Kubiak as his OC.

i think the best combo would be to reunite with little shanahan. kyle is probably most capable of adding a creative element that kubiak can often lack, while staying within kubiak's comfort zone. our offense seemed it's most dynamic when kyle was here, though there's no telling how much input he really had.
