O.B the OC

EllisUnit

Vote RED!!!
This dude is a horrible offensive coordinator, he is so uncreative and it could be me but it seems like he is trying to protect mallet, i saw very few deep routes in this game.

I know Mallet was not very accurate today, but the kid still looks pretty good to me, IMO all he needs is more game time. BUT shouldn't we take advantage of his biggest asset (HIS ARM STRENGTH). And that falls on O.B IMO.

And for the love of god stop throwing WR screens, as seen by defenses nobody is fooled.

Agree.

He is:

1) horribly predictable (do we ever throw on first down when we are leading?)
2) un-creative -- sorry, but I'm not seeing Chip Kelly out there...
3) relies too much on the run game. Arian is broken, how long until Blue is?

Where are the TE's? Where are the slants to the slot? Where
are the behind the LOS screens with multiple blockers in front?

Where is anything that looks novel? It's like 1970's college football without
the Wishbone.

Yeah come to think about it i have not seen OB run a normal screen, he has to realize this is not college and 1 guy cant do it all by himself. Especially all the screens to AJ, I love AJ but he is not going to break many of those off for much.

If you want to use AJ put him in the slot and run him on some slants, especially in the red zone. His big body and hands would let him get automatic yards on 10 yard slant routes.

Sounds an awful lot like many of the things I complained about early in the season .... I stand by what I said back then , this offensive system sucks.

They were .... battling , played their tails off.

Same soup , different pot.

We run it on 1st down every single time, if we go down by multiple scores then we might change it up, but come on.

I thought the job of the "OC" was to keep defenses guessing, if we at home know what is coming you can bet opposing coaches know.

I've noticed when I go to restaurants if they have a big menu the chances are they make nothing especially good. But if the menu is a little simpler, but still with plenty of choices, you get a good meal almost no matter what you order.

I've been thinking the last few weeks this offense is too complex for it's own good. Maybe dumb it down and add plays later, I don't know.

Imo there is nothing complex about this offense at all. It's bland and not unique at all. To me it's all about timing and quick throws. Similar to the Patriots. The difference is we don't have a ton of experience as a group playing together. Timing is off a lot and then you add in malletts accuracy issues today and you get the result we did.

I don't believe any offense looks good when the qb can't hit a target. The ol couldn't run block today and mallet's accuracy was way off. I dont think any scheme is going to look genius when that happens.

Agreed, in a way. I think the complexity comes from the different looks OB wants to show the defense, all resulting in some oddly familiar plays. Just me.

I see a lot of guys fidgeting around like they don't think they lined up correctly on runs up the middle. That stuff tends to get in a players head.

I was expecting a big ass running attack.
big blocking TE drafted.
Tank drafted at FB
Top Guard drafted.
lots of I formation runs with a stop us if you can.

Obviously this was before our first pre season game :(

We were outclassed by cincy's front 7. X cant pass block. Prosch is one dimensional. Fido is neither a dominant run blocker or capable of stretching the field. Last week against the browns how many people complained about the offensive scheme? Id agree our passing game doesn't appear nearly as dynamic as it did in kubiaks heyday...but i wonder how much of that is a product of qb performance? If manning, Rodgers, or brees is here how brilliant does this offense look?

They really don't have the weapons to be a spread offense. Just too slow at all the skill positions. Can't run short quick passes when guys are sitting on your WRs. The adjustment has to be more playaction and double moves to scheme them open.

Totally agree, but he likely won't get it if last year is any indication. Like last year, the team waits until several L's were already on the record before giving the new guy a shot. On top of that, the secondary still needs work, just like last year.

I predicted 6-10 for this season, so I can't be too disappointed.

Great post. Completely agree.

Which works when the defense fears a running game. That wasnt the case today and mallet wasnt accurate enough to make a JV team pay.

Yet they were great targets, underutilized, and always open when Fitzpatrick was playing - he just held the ball too long. Andre Johnson is really breaking out with Mallett at QB...

You know complaining about Mallett doesn't make Fitz any better than he was right?

Andre was open plenty today. Mallett missed him along with others countless times. Just stop already.

Not very .... cause the OL cant seem to block.

X has been a bust.

Newton is still starting somehow ....

They didn't give up a bunch of sacks or negative plays , but they didn't make any plays either.

I'm glad they made the change .... Much like last year going from the known & underperforming Schaub to the unknown Keenum , we knew what Fitz was capable of going into the season .... Mallett , not so much.

Its only been two games and we still don't know if he'll work out but at least we're on the path to finding out so we have something to base future decisions at the position on ....

Had it been my decision , I'd likely have done it much earlier in the season knowing this season is a throw away .

been saying it since preseason, this offense is ugly. i'd be very concerned if we dont make an effort to bring in an offensive coordinator next season.

Pretty hard to call an offense in the modern NFL when your QB's are a noodle arm who can't get the ball out without great protection and a howitzer who can't land a 5 yard pass in the same zip code as his intended target.

O'Brien hasn't been a great playcaller this year, but he's obviously hamstrung by what he has to work with at QB. Not to mention the all-pro RB missing every other game and the holes on the O-Line. O'Brien actually has a track record as a playcaller. I think I'll give him more than 11 games before I label him a fraud.

You have got to be kidding me. Just chill bro.

A few things to consider:

1. Arian Foster is out - best player on the offensive side of the ball.
2. Our quarterback is starting his second game EVER.
3. Our head coach is coaching his 11th pro game EVER.
4. We were 2-14 last season and should easily quadruple the total of wins this season.
5. Our #1 overall draft pick Sucks donkey c--k. (I know he's defense and this thread is bitching about offense but I im pissed that clowney is awful).

Honestly, step off the ledge bro. I think there may have been some false expectations last week regarding mallet and his possible potential/talent so we need to keep in mind that this fifth year veteran has not won a starting job somewhere for a reason. I'm not saying Mallett isn't any good but I think he played above himself last week. Cincy defense and Marvin Lewis are MUCH better than Cleveland and Mike Pettine when it comes to scheming against a QB weakness. He wasnt throwing deep because it wasn't there. Marvin knew not to give up the deep ball because the kid has an arm so he made him try and beat him underneath.

Again, first year for this team and QBs to be together. I think this is WAY premature.

Just gotta see a bigger sample size. All I wanted before the end of the year was to see mallet and savage some. If they're not it ok. I just wanna know before we go into next offseason. I wanna know what we need and we wont know unless these guys play. Kudos to bob because we all know what fitz is. No complaints about qb usage. Just the remainder of the team. Bob can't play Montana if he's not on the roster.

Not near the edge by stating OB has been a bad OC, cause it is true. Still this is not a major over reaction haha

I think the lack of down field throws and the million wr screens hurt us today. Not to mention the fact we run on first down almost every series. I mean wtf is that.

You're right. I was lumping your initial post with the "pink soap" and "how awful he is" posts when in fact you were just talking about his bad play calling.

I agree with you.

I do think it's ridiculous for some guys to talk as if he is just as bad as Kubiak when the guy is a rookie head coach with a rookie starting quarterback for two weeks and a different quarterback that was as good as Cleo lemon the other ten games.

Did they expect much different?

New system. Rookie head coach. Crappy QBs. Non-existent #1 pick...and yet we have still more than doubled our win total from last year.

Keep things in perspective...we all said we would be very happy if we went 8-8 which I still will consider a big improvement.

Let me begin by saying I don't like franchises that change coaches every year, also I despise the Harbaughs, both of them. But if the Niners part ways with Harbaugh I'd grab him in a heart beat and get rid of OB.

They call that a torn pectoral on your throwing side play calling.

Yep.

There's a possibility that BoB won't have even a statistically average NFL QB during his stay in Houston, and the team is lacking in talent. His play calling and scheme is a small piece of the larger puzzle, which has more important pieces. Whether he's dealt a bad hand or can't coach if he doesn't win the end result will be the same.

FYI... this is exactly why O'Brien doesn't have an OC. "We're" blaming him for the poor calls, & Godsey doesn't have to bear the brunt. He's allowed to work on his issues without the scrutiny.
