The last time the Cleveland Browns were in first place this late in a season, the franchise was still in version 1.0 with their contentious move out of the city two seasons away and their rebirth five years out.

Remaining at the top for another week would require them to spoil Ryan Mallett's first NFL start as the Houston Texans visit Cleveland on Sunday with hopes of finding new offensive footing.

The Browns (6-3) last led their division entering Week 11 in 1994, and they went on to a wild-card berth in their next-to-last season before moving to Baltimore.

The Texans (4-5) come out of their Week 10 bye turning to Mallett, who spent the first three years of his career behind Tom Brady before being traded for a draft pick in August. He hasn't thrown a pass this season while Ryan Fitzpatrick started the first nine games, but coach Bill O'Brien has confirmed this won't be a one-week trial period. Mallett will remain the starter for the rest of the season.

What I want to see:

  • Let Mallett throw the rock early. Screens and short throws at first to find rhythm.
  • Ball security. Youngsters will be all over the backfield in this one, so the importance of this is unrivaled.
  • Takeaways and cashing in on them. Texans are one of the top teams in taking the ball away, but taking advantage of them is where games are won!
  • Own the LOS. CLE does well most weeks running the football, so stopping them (they are kind of like us) is massive. Also, running all over them to set a tone; keeping their offense off the field.

Back to work! 2nd half of the season begins now, and it starts in the Dawg Pound. We have the horses to pull this off, so how about this: Get this W, move to 5-5, and make it at least interesting when it comes to that wild card race? Sound good? Good. Let's go to C-Town, and break up this Browns streak! LET'S MUTHA****IN' GO, TEXANS!!

It's a bad day to be a Brown. Mullets for Mallets. Dial M for Mallett. Mallett is Murder. Mallettious Intent.

Someone rep this guy for me, please?

This feels like opening day. I tried to keep up my spirit, but I honestly never thought we had a chance with Fitz. Now, I believe there's a chance. :fans:

Fuggit, let me on the koolaid sipping bandwagon. All we have is hope, I'll hold onto it for another hours at least.

Got him...

Time to find out what Mallett does and doesn't have, especially without Foster playing today. "Managing the game" is not an option now, he'll have to go out there and win it through the air. Feeling nervously optimistic right now...and p##sed off! Another week of not getting the game in DFW, off to the bar...

At least I can rest assured that there wont be a cluster of dbag Browns fans to be obnoxious; there are no Browns fans in DFW. Literally. Well, my boss claims to be one now...but he's just a bandwagoning tool from Cincinnati.

Go Texans!!!! 5-5!

I hope Mallet can put all these great things said about him together on field and show us what he can do.

That's how they roll in DFW. ABT (Anyone But Texans).

I may just be coincidence, but we seem to get more Texans broadcasts here when they are winning. I think it may be the bandwagon effect. Unfortunately, now that the Cowboys are playoff bound, all of the bandwagon fans are unavailable...so I'll be spending a lot of money back into the "local economy" this season.

My final prediction.

Mallett & Blue are going to have trouble moving the ball.

But Big Grease is going to take Hoyer out of the game, & JFF is going to help us score two TDs.

All this talk about Hoyer vs Mallett everyone seems to just casually overlook: the Texans defense KNOWS Clevelands offense very well. I have watched some highlights of the Browns run game and it is almost a 100% copy.of Kubiaks ZBS.

Texans get 3 turnovers and only have 1. Tate starts talking crap about the Browns fans and in the 3rd qtr is knocked out cold by rabid biscuit eating Browns fans.

Little Shanny thinks he's back in Texas and is sidetracked by his manlove for all that is Chris Simms. His tattoo freezes over and the painful memories caused by his lost love leads little Shanny to call plays that gets the Brownies shutout.

Texans 16
Brownies 0

Go Texans

I'd say it's fairly reasonable to believe we will be watching the Texan's 2015 QB on the field of play today.

The more I've read about him, the more I believe the same thing. I don't see how a capable QB prospect could be any better prepared for a debut.

DManning starting over Swearinger?

Sending a message? Just for base? Just for a few play?

PDS @PatDStat
You want accountability? #Texans bench Ryan Fitzpatrick, Justin Tuggle and D.J. Swearinger coming out of the bye week.

Max Bullough inactive today.

By the end of the season, I have the feeling it is reasonable to believe that it will be definite that we will be watching Mallet as the 2015 QB.:texflag:

One point of emphasis O'Brien made prior to player evaluations is a team that played "fast" -- not a word we'd use often to describe this roster.

Today CB Darryl Morris returns to play. He does have speed -- hope he has a healthy day. (KJ out)

That's what I think as well. I don't think it's possible to get a QB any more ready for his first start than Ryan Mallet is. Failure is not an option and a failure today will mean (to me at least) that we have a possible "between the ears" problem. Not so much in understanding what needs to be done but more of a can't-play-at-full-speed-at-this-level or a can't-step-up-in-the-spotlight sort of problem. I don't expect to see any of that today but if it happens it won't be a "not-ready-to-play-yet problem. That's for damn sure.

Despite how that sounds I have really high hopes for today. I'm not so worried about winning or losing (of course I want a win. I want a win every week) but if we can't get the running game going or the Brown blow our offense out and we can't keep up then I'm not real worried about that where Mallet is concerned. I want to see how he plays. If he gets 6-8 drops I'm not going to be down on him unless they're 5 yard Mach 3 bullets and even then I'm going to be hoping he settles down.

Just want to see the big guy play well and have fun in his first NFL start. I think he can do it.

Kubiak used to struggle running against a 3/4..... let's see if BabyShanny figured it out.

Wow.. what a very long and excruciating bye week. Time to get it in gear and kick some Browns a$$! Good luck Ryan Mallett and Go Texans!

I miss the old AFC Central. Going to that rathole that was Cleveland Stadium in the snow.

Anyway, I'm really for some Texans football after a two week withdrawal (I should be careful what I ask for).

Good luck to all of us. :peek:

I think the whole hold-up with Mallett has been around his contract. I can understand him wanting to play before he signs a long term deal, to show everybody, not just the Texans, what he is capable of doing.

However, I don't think he can show up bigger/better than Josh McCown did last year & I can't imagine anyone paying him more... I also can't imagine if OB & Godsey were confident enough about the kid to bring him to Houston not to go ahead & sign him to a Josh McCown type deal.

So... if he's looking for more than that I'd rather the Texans let him go & draft another QB & let him & Savage earn the job in the preseason. All while getting Fitz ready for his coaching career.

If we run the table and finish 11-5 will that be good enough to get us into the playoffs? What if we lose only one more game at Indianapolis and finish 10-6? I'm worried 10-6 won't be enough for a wild-card spot in the AFC but I could be wrong. Obviously winning today is all that matters right now.

Winning will take care of the rest. If Ryan Mallett plays well and the team wins game after game to finish 2014 off on a good note - maybe even make the playoffs - with him being a big spark I can't imagine the Texans not signing him long-term this off-season.

I think 11-5 would be enough. I think we need the Colts to drop a couple games. Tonight against the Patriots would be a good start. They also still have to play @Browns and @Cowboys.

...but if we can't get the running game going or the Brown blow our offense out and we can't keep up...

Very first play should be a play action off the boot. Even if he has to throw it away it should slow the run-blitz enough to get something started on the ground.

Isn't he a free agent? I am afraid if he is reasonably good, someone will over pay.

I think we can do it. At this point in the season we can't really afford another loss. Kind of sucks that Arian Foster and Kareem Jackson are out today but I'm excited for Jadeveon Clowney and Brian Cushing both saying that they feel great again. We should see a strong pass rush moving forward. I also think Ryan Mallett can spark our under-achieving passing game on offense. We can beat a good Browns team on the road today. That would give us some momentum moving forward.

Ryan Mallett is thankful for a chance to start after four years being in the league. Do you really think he'll leave if he plays well and has success for the rest of the 2014 season? He knows Bill O'Brien's system. It's the same one they ran in New England. Unless Tom Brady retires I don't see him going anywhere else. And even then, they have Jimmy Garoppolo. Ryan Mallett is a Texan for life, IMO.

I'll say this for you, I like your optimism, no kidding.

My inbox is always open if you need a shoulder when the Texans break your heart just in time for Christmas. :specnatz:

Ben Tate mad once again. Not starting against the #Texans today.

He's got no one to blame but himself.

Isaiah Crowell is averaging 4.7 ypc, Terrance West is averaging 3.7 ypc, & Ben is bringing up the rear with a less than stellar 3.3 ypc... then it seems like he's doing nothing but complaining.
