If you watch Carden this week note how he commands the offense. At times he looks like Peyton Manning out there. I'm not saying he is Manning, only that he reminds me of Manning with all the arm waving, hand signal, barking instructions (Omaha). IMO Carden is the most active QB I have seen this year in commanding, directing and managing the offense. Carden is certainly more aggressive and is given more leeway in calling the offense/game than most other college QBs today.

Carden played his worst game of the season. I said a week ago that East Carolina was not a very good football team. Today they had 7 fumbles-5 lost, 6 drops and 12 penalties for 120 yds. The rain and chilly weather exposed a bad football team. To many team mistakes for Carden to overcome.

It was unwatchable, but what I did watch that's a fair review.

On my board...he started the year with 4th round grade and has moved up to 3rd round during the season.

Most other observations I've heard have him lower and he seems to have been pegged with the high ceiling / low upside designation. He doesn't have a cannon arm, doesn't have "prototypical" size, and plays in a pass happy spread so he's not someone who will grab your attention unless you actually study him.

I think he will continue his slow rise because of his consistency while guys like Petty/Hogan continue falling and there are more questions than answers with guys like Winston/Hundley. Mariota and Cook are the only 2 guys I see holding their ground right now although Grayson is starting to get a little bit of hype as well (rightfully so).

He's the only QB so far to accept an invitation to the Senior Bowl.

What's the difference between a 3rd & 4th round grade at QB? How does one "rise" because more people are watching him?

When all is said and done I can see Cardin as a 2nd or late RD 1 pick. He is under the media radar and has been dismissed or ignored. If you follow the media they will have him as a 4th or later rd pick. Scouts will have a much higher grade on Carden than the media.

While this was true of Bortles it was not of Savage whom we saw climb rapidly before draft then drop to 4th and the last comp pick at that. While I do like what I see, I am thinking now that he will climb only (as mentioned above) due to the fall of others and lack of quality had prime position.

As of today, I think it will be Fitz and Savage on roster or at least another vet and Savage with Mallett moving on..unless he has a terrific 7 games allowing McNair to pay top dollar for less risk.

TK it is helpful to remember that the few "name" guys evaluate all college players not just top 100 or so. No way can they evaluate every game let alone every play so they focus on certain guys regularly and then play catch up when they can. I expect Gerod Holliman to become a "bullet" on charts with 13 INTs at safety for Louisville but I do not read or hear much about him. One of the big sources will hit on a guy and then he is a topic for a while. If nothing bad can be found (Mariota is an example) as it get closer to draft, some folks will start throwing crap around so they will keep their own name in the spotlight.

IMO, top three rounds for most teams is considered starter material within a couple years, 4th round is more down the road and "backup" role that might become a starter. That is why I give more rope for players like Newton than I did Kareem Jackson.

On my most recent mock, have him to Texans in 4th but am willing to take him with a third. His recent effort as mentioned above holds him down. I think a great combine will greatly benefit him. If Houston is convinced he will be better than Savage, go get him. Let's not have another Garoppolo.

Sorry for delay as I got caught up in the Earl Campbell interview.

Sample was rated by Rivals as a 4 star recruit out of high school as he had a very good junior & senior year with about 100+ tackles each and was 9th safety in nation, IIRC. He is a bit older as he played at U of Washington 2 years before leaving team due to injuries (shoulder in 2011), going JUCO route then on to Louisville. He's having a decent year with 3 INTs, 64 T and 5 passes b/up. This is main reason, imo that Holliman is have such fantastic season. He is not ranked very high and I'm guessing he will return to school especially if Holliman comes out as he will want to raise his status as "the" guy.

I never saw Savage as a climber. His two episodes of jumping ship, his low completion %s and marginal TD to INT ratio said day 3 all along in my mind.

Fantastic point here and then perfect example right after. I've been watching Louisville closely to scout their defensive prospects (Mauldin, Gaines, etc.). Holliman has popped off the screen each time but I haven't spent much time on him because I don't expect him to be in the draft.

Sometimes the best players you find are the ones you aren't looking for. You're watching somebody else and the same guy just keeps jumping out at you.
 
I like Carden but in my opinion the best small school QB prospect in this class is Grayson from Colorado St.

He might be my #3 QB at the end of this thing. Check him out if you get a chance.

Well said, that is how I discovered Andrew Jackson LB for Western Kentucky and now Colts.

Any opinion on Gaines? I was interested in him early season but seemed to wane.

He's still very raw. Last year was his first year ever playing defense and he looked great. The talent and athleticism are there. I had him rated as a second round talent before the season but I'm starting to reevaluate.

I thought he would make a big jump in his second year but he hasn't. He hasn't grown at all mentally. He needs to go back for his senior year. I think he's missing the previous staff.

same here, thanks. I think a lot of the players will return to school reducing the talent available.
 
ILB Luc looks like a beast, anyone know anything about him? I am going to research. First series Carden throws on run, off balance and in air to Hardy; incomplete but I did go wow at his arm.

edit and :ILB Jeff Luc 6'1" 256 adds to his forced fumbles by yanking ball away from E. Carolina RB. Hmm 89 tackles, 2.5 sacks and now 4 fumbles.
 
Luc was actually a blue chip prospect coming out of high school. He was rated as one of the best players in the state of Florida and the best MLB in the entire country.

He played two years at Florida St before transferring to Cincinnati. Most places I've seen have him ranked in the 6th/7th round but I've got a 4th round grade on him, and every time I watch him I think maybe it should be better than that.
 
IMO LUC looks like he plays slow. Usually when kids transfer from a top college program is because they don't have what it takes. As for ILB I have my eye on A.J. Johnson from Tennessee.

Carden played well. Unfortunately for Carden, outside of #2 Hardy, there is not a WR on the team than can get separation. Carden would be even better if he just had some above average talent and good coaching around him. If not for Carden, East Carolina would be a sub .500 ball team.

Luc is not the most athletic guy. He's huge though and great at cleaning things up in the middle. There's definitely a cap on his potential because he isn't a three down player.

Agree about Johnson. He's my #2 ILB behind McKinney.

I like the value of picking up Reshard Cliett in the later rounds. Too many holes to go ILB in the first few rounds.

EDIT: I misread your statement. Disregard. I like McKinney a ton.
 
Shane Carden and ECU play Tulsa tonight on ESPNU at 7:30PM. Carden had a very good game last week, over 70% and 300 yds.

After watching the first 6 minutes of this game I predict Carden will play well but Tulsa will win because they are better coached....missed on this one ECU won.
3 Passing TDs in the first half.

Carden had a BIG night 300+ yds 68% and 4 passing/1 rushing TD.

That touchdown was off a beautiful play call by Lincoln Riley. I sure as hell hope that if Spavital walks for Tulsa, A&M gives Riley a call.

Carden has been getting no help from his O-line.
 
Wow that really just happened. Hail Mary at 0:00 and UCF wins it.

ECU's clock management was freaking terrible. UCF had too many timeouts and too much time to start kneeling it at 1st down.
