University of Houston season thread

Showtime100

Got JJ?
Anybody watching the BYU game? 23-15 Provo's at the half. Wow. What a surprising ending to the 2nd quarter. Houston has stayed in it, warts and all. More later...:)

I thought we needed a thread, this seemed as good a time as any. :user:

Gutsy effort by the Coogs. They played tough when I thought they were down and out.

Certainly doing better than what Texas did against them. :mcnugget:

As expected as far as I was predicting.

Houston went in to their house and played them tough. I still want to see a replay ESPN refused to show after a challenge. All in all, like gwallaia said, gutsy performance.

I have a feeling Taysom Hill is going to wear out a lot of defenses this year.

Unreal that they trot O'Korn out there every week. He hasn't looked even close to decent in any game this season.

Levine and Bush have ruined O'Korn's development. Both will be gone by the end of the season, hopefully sooner.

Can't be soon enough for me. Each game I sit and wonder if they could look any less prepared. Stupid penalties, stupid everything.

This is how i feel as well. O'korn looked pretty good for a freshman last year..this year he doesn't look like he's progressed at all. I couldn't even watch that game yesterday & I've never seen such a pathetic air-raid offense; they couldn't move the ball for anything.

Levine is terrible..

The Coogs are on ESPNNEWS if anyone is interested but didn't know. Right now they are scoreless at South Florida midway through the 1st.

Wow. I don't know who these guys are anymore...lol.

Houston gets it done old school pounding it out on the ground. Ok, it's South Florida, but how cool is it to see the Cougars establish a solid running game and take it from there.

Greg Ward's 80-something yards passing doesn't instill fear but 15-19 sure jumps off the page at you.

Game balls all around really. Great team effort and team win.

Time to keep it going against Tulane.

The UH defense for the past two seasons have been superb. We aint winning like we used to but we seem to be getting better as the season goes on.

We are not very good on offense if we were that game would have been 50-3. I think LeBush don't have a clue about our offensive system which Levine promised not to change but its become more conservative that it has been since Helton was fired in 99. Its a shame how bad this conference is because this team has no business still being in the conference race but they are. Thank goodness for David Gibbs.

The defense has been great since Levine became the head coach.

I've always thought Houston had talented RBs that they underutilized. Nice to see them get turned loose.

Ward isn't fantastic, but he protects the ball better and the play calling has been better since he took over.

The defense sucked in 2012 and the Defensive Coordinator was fired after that season and David Gibbs was hired.

With SMU and Tulsa left on the schedule, there's no reason you guys won't go at least 7-5, with the chance to go 8-4 if you pull off the upset vs. Cincinnati.

Levine coached teams are fully capable of losing to anyone they take the field against. I seriously doubt they will beat UCinn up there in December.

I've heard players have been informed at Houston that head coach Tony Levine has been fired. Official announcement expected soon.

This has been the most disappointing 7-5 season ever.
Levine is a lousy coach.

David Nuño @DavidNunoABC13
Leach makes 2.75 million which is rather steep but would be a splash hire if #UH decides to go in different direction.

Source confirms Mike Leach has interest in #UH job if buyout and contract issues could be worked out. Watch #abc13 tonight for more.

Levine is officially gone now.

David Gibbs interim coach for Bowl game against Pitt.

Who will the new coach be?

Wade Phillips is interested as well but he's over-qualified for such a position. How good of a recruiter would he be? I like the notion if he were younger but he seems more suited to become a defensive coordinator in the NFL. Didn't U of H just give Tony Levine a big contract extension last year? He was to coach until 2018 if I'm not mistaken. So the team goes 7-5 and makes another bowl game, as expected, and he's fired. I didn't have higher expectations than that. If anything this firing lowers my excitement for the Armed Forces Bowl against Pittsburgh. I still expect U of H to win on January 2.

It is starting to appear that Tom Herman, the OC at Ohio State has emerged as the front runner for the UH head coaching position.

That would be an excellent hire. He's actually one of my fallbacks for Michigan if they can't land Jim Harbaugh.

Would be a great hire.

I know the Wolverines would never hire Vrabel/ But if I was the Wisconsin AD Vrabel would be my 1st call.

That is discouraging to say the least. U of H is viewed as a second-rate program. We can't land any big names anymore. And the good coaches like Kevin Sumlin and Art Briles just use us as a stepping stone for bigger and better things.

I have no problem with Muschamp not coming here. I just don't like the guy and never have. It might be that he coached under Mack Brown, a guy I think is as filthy as a coach can be. Maybe his judgement isn't that great either otherwise he might have considered the above in bold.

Whatever the case, I'm happy he isn't in Houston.

He's a much better DC than he is a HC... UH needs new blood, even if they use it for a stepping stone

Not official yet, but it looks like Tom Herman will be the next head coach of the Houston Cougars.

The AD Rhoades needs to be fired as well. He made claims that only the best would be hired at UH and yet, he turns around and hires a former ST coach to be HC.

Wasn't Harbaugh a former ST coach?

I'm hearing the same.

I've also heard that Herman is going to hire Major Applewhite as QB coach/offensive coordinator, but that Herman will mostly be calling the plays.

Also it is looking like efforts are being made to keep David Gibbs as DC.

Holy Crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Coogs win 35-34!!!!!

22 points in the last 3:41 along with two successful onsides kicks and a 2-point conversion to win it.

GO COOOOGS!!!!!!!!!!

Unbelievable. The 1979 Cotton Bowl comes to mind, only Houston made the comeback to win 35-34 this time around.

Maybe it was that I was at that game 36 years ago, but after today's game I called my friend who went along with us to that cold game in '79 (on every level) and we reminisced about that game and this one too.

The talking heads on ESPN Radio seemed a tad disgusted by the comeback....lol.

Wow. That just makes my day. :hurrah:

Felt like I was in a commercial for Wing Stop. Walked in exactly around that time, looked pretty hopeless, asked bartender if we had a chance, oh yeah, so ordered, then place this came alive & improbable become reality. Fun Stuff :toast2:

Only caught the fourth quarter and I'm very glad that I did. Amazing finish.

Off topic from the bowl game, but I've heard that Levine is interviewing at Texas for their open Tight End/Special Teams position.

That's awesome, glad we have him. I see this as a turning point for the UH program IMO. One where this program gets back to dominance and is highly recognized nationally.
