Texans roster moves

Anybody who has hopes for a much better than .500 season can forget it. Their apparent unwillingness to do anything about Newton proves that average is their goal and the most they are hoping for this year.

Wasn't there some guy named KJ who was catching the same kind of heat about not being an NFL quality corner a couple of years ago and than he changed to an above average corner?

As for unwillingness to make a change, I have no doubt there would be a change if he were as bad as some of you think.

That and they have players moving everywhere . I think that come week 1 they will have a good OL .

I think a lot of people are going to be upset with the lack of activity we're going to see when final cuts come around.

Not me...I like the talent we have here.

Not sure how much they will go outside of the guys here, but I wouldn't be upset if they don't get all our depth from other teams.

What do you mean exactly TK?

I'm in the 'I think a lot of people are going to be surprised' when both rounds of cuts come up. I'm glad I'm not the one having to do the paring down. I don't want to come across as a UDFA :homer: but there's a bunch of talent there. They won't all end up playing for the Texans but I think a considerable number of them will still be in the league.

If not, then I guess I am a :homer:...but this is one year I'm going to be watching closely.

I'm thinking he means that we won't be dumpster diving - scouring the waiver wire - like we did in 2006 and '07 to try and get some actual football players. And there may be some here who think that level of activity may be in order. I think maybe we pick up a couple or three guys but I'd be surprised if there was a whole bunch of movement.

With TK, he's probably predicting we will cut fewer players than required and try and sneak in a 65 man opening day roster.
Well the taxi squad was bumped up by 25% from 8 to 10. Maybe he's applying that same ratio to the main roster

...that would be 66 players.

...griping about how we don't have salary cap room for 45 players, let alone 60+ in...

Better maybe, probably not cheaper.

Might bring in some rookies who get cut by other teams.
At that end of the bench, I doubt they would impact the cap negatively. Vets with something left could be an impact on the field this year while allowing some of our younger guys to develop.

Only the top 51 count against the cap, plus they have 7 mill in cap room available.

After final cuts, all 53 roster spots will count against the cap, along with those players on IR, players on reserve PUP (which will be nobody for the Texans), and anybody added to the practice squad. I'm guessing they're going to pay Quessenberry this season (it's at their discretion), and if they do, that will also count against the cap.

No big hits in that, but it all adds up.

I guess I am the only one hoping 2-3 vets get picked up that are better than our UDFAs

No your not the only one. I expect the Texans to be looking for O-line help, secondary help, and possibly a player of value that they just can't turn down. The waiver wire from the last cuts will be interesting.

I'm hoping that a qb gets cut that can beat out Fitz or Kennum for a roster spot. Most likely Keenum. Also secondary help and ol help. I don't know the status of Cushing but hopefully he can stay healthy all season and get close to being the player he was prior to the last 2 injuries. If not mlb help.

I see 2 or 3 players being picked up off the WW. That's not a lot of movement but there will be better talent on the WW than on the bottom of the Texans roster. After all the team was 2-14 last yr for a reason.

Luckily scanning the WW is something Smith and crew have become very proficient at over the yrs.

For the most part me too, with the exception of QB and RT. Everything else is serviceable to great.

I expect a lot of movement because the backend of the roster stinks.

i'd definitely bring him in for a look. you never know when zombie skeletons could attack so it's nice to have experience on the line.

I don't think that you want any part of Campbell. Last fall he underwent rotator cuff surgery. The Skins signed him back in March, but a couple of days later nullified the contract since he failed his physical. He is likely looking at needing to go back to surgery for his rotator again. He was never good enough to be made a starter despite being a 4th rounder 4 years ago............and now a T with a bad rotator????.............I don't think so.

[Just FYI. Duane Brown's arm length is 34 1/4 inches. Campbell's is a whopping 36 1/2"........not very good when a DL decides to test that long leverage/stress on the rotator cuff mechanism]

I see what you did there!

He's also getting a little old...

Didn't know the details. I'm sniffing around each and every OT getting released that has some experience.

Jeff Matthews QB cut by Atlanta. I know there were some real fanboys around for this guy in the draft.

Winston Justice OT cut by Denver. Guy with some experience at least.

I would bring in I-Dowling but as a safety. 6'1 210 4.4 and only if he is healthy.

Tommy Streeter 6'5" WR would get a look see.

No reason to think I-Dowling stays healthy. He hasn't since high school, where he never completed a full season because of multiple different injuries. Dowling had a long injury history at the University of Virginia of ankle, hamstring and knee problems, and things only got worse at the pro level. He missed most of his rookie preseason with a hamstring, then ruptured a tendon in his leg in his rookie season along with an injury to his hip labrum which required surgery. This occurred just 2 games into the season. The next season he tore his quadriceps, which ended his second season.

The Texans brought him in last Sept and passed on him........for good reason.

Looks like there's some good talent out there on the wire already. I hope the texans rotate some of these guys out and give some guys a look.

If you have an opportunity to sign a physically gifted OT, you do it! You can't worry about bad shoulders... shoulders can always be fixed.

Yes that why he 'd have to pass a physical but keep in mind, safety less stressful than corner over all. You the doc but if labrum, hamstring and ankle healed knee is the biggest concern right? Not all on same leg either. The tendon IIRC was a result of the hammy or vice versa?

The only time he has not missed time is since his quad tear.........and that's because he has not seen any regular game time since. If a team doesn't put him in for a regular season game, he is likely not to suffer another injury. With his history of so many lower limb injuries, if and when he sees game time experience, he is likely to add to his already extensive rehab experience. I believe we would be looking at another Sharpton and Reed fiasco.

BTW, the labrum, hamstring, ankle and knee (especially after a quad tear history) are all injuries that can readily be injured after supposedly being "healed."

I know you are not intentionally ignoring my point that he would have less risk at free safety but I would take that chance IF he can get on field. You could say same about Cushing, Newton, Nix, etc that their injuries are likely to re-occur, correct?

Mark Berman @MarkBermanFox26
Texans waive G S.Longo, WR J.Adams & A.Lemon, RB W.Powell, NT A.Brown & D.Hunter, OLB T. Lloyd, CB J. Mertile & OLB L. Sidbury. (more)

Texans placed David Quessenberry on IR & still have four more moves to make to get to 75 before Tuesday.
