More Bill O'Brien on backup quarterback situation: Case Keenum is still "2" but Tom Savage is close

Bill O'Brien says Tom Savage definitely closed the gap with Case Keenum. He called the two "pretty close."
Dale Robertson @sportywineguy
BOB: Let's be clear now. Tom has long way to go. Not heading to the Pro Bowl, yet, just [because he beat the Broncos in the 4th quarter of a preseason game.]

BOB: Impressed with how Savage got the Texans into the right plays on the winning drive. Lots of variables, so many different things.

BOB on backup QB: "It's pretty close. Tom Savage definitely closed the gap."

BOB admits game plans are "vanilla" in preseason. Says all QBs have improved.

BOB: Drive by Savage two-minute drive at the end of the game was excellent.

O'Brien not surprised by Savage's progress w/#Texans. Saw good chance of that ability in pre-draft process.

I was listening to the interview. I think savage moves ahead of keenum and I think keenum gets cut. I like keenum, but it's about football bro.

I like Case, but was at the game last night and came away with the exact same feeling. I think Case's best hope is to play well in the last PS game and for no intriguing QBs being available after next week.

BTW, Savage sucked the wind out of the stadium last night. The fans were doing the wave and getting all jacked up, talking sh_t, etc. and then Tommy Savage and our 2s/3s made it happen. I'm jacked about Labhart also, I call him our Welker (my wife's a Bronco fan). If anything we may have seen a glimpse into our future.

Savage played great. I want to see him start game 4 and play the entire first half. Let Case get the 2nd half. Lets see Tom build a rhythm and get into the flow of a game.

having only 2 qbs is not wise, no matter how much you dislike Case.....
Hypothetically, if we cut Keenum and Fitz goes down and Savage isn't ready either Keenum or some equivalent will be available via FA. I don't see teams beating down Keenum's door. Hell I'm sure there's some PS QB that could bring what Keenum brings.

If Jacksonville want to sit Bortles minimize pressure to make sure he is confidently prepared then retain Keenum to keep from throwing Savage to the Savages. We all like what we're seeing but would hate to see him digress because Texans are out of options.

Savage makes throwing look easy . He stands tall and zips it without changing motions . That's what seperates him from the other two . If he can grasp the mental part and apply it on the field , he can be good .

Don't we have Fitz for that? Don't get me wrong, if it were up to me I'd have Keenum starting and Savage backing him up, simply because we don't know their ceiling yet and it would get us some excitment. But Fitz is our veteran guy behind whom Savage can sit and learn. Savage would only be thrown to the Savages, if he gets injured (same as in Jacksonville). I have no problem with that.

2 or 3 QBs, I don't really care. If we need that spot someplace else I am alright with cutting Case. It's not like we'd have a serious chance at the playoffs if we lose 2 QBs anyways - this is not 2011.

I think here in Houston we Texans fans are terrified that we're going to throw some young guy to the wolves and he'll turn into David Carr. I think that's a misplaced concern because David Carr had no Duane Brown on his left. That was supposed to be Tony Boselli and he never played a down. David Carr never had even a fraction of the talent that the Texans have on their line today protecting him. Brandon Brooks would have been the best guard on the team back then and Derrick Newton, our "weak link" would have been right at home on that squad. Matt Schaub lacked real mobility (even before his injury) and so he wasn't too easy to protect for either. A young QB who actually possesses an internal clock that works at NFL speeds would be fine behind our line.

If you can sit Savage for a little while then of course do it but the only way you ever find out whether they can handle it is to throw them in there and see. Sooner or later he'll have to go out there and do it. He won't become David Carr from a few sacks.

David's problem was that he never learned to protect himself... Schaub came in without a Boselli or a Brown & teams backed off because he knew how to fight back. As soon as Savage or whoever our next QB is learns to protect himself, to fight back, then we won't need a Ryan Fitzpatrick.

At this point, I'm trusting OB to do what he thinks best to develop Savage (and Fitz and Keenum, for that matter.)

If he doesn't want Savage starting, yet, fine. If he wants to start him to get experienced, great.

I'm good either way.

I agree, but if Case gets picked up, which def could happen, trusting someone to come in and grasp BoBs playbook right away if Fitz goes down is damn risky.....Case isn't great, but BoB is familiar enough with him that he could be a valuable 3.

I really like Keenum but he can't read a defense fast enough, make decisions fast enough, and I just don't think he really grasps this O'Brien offense. I'm not saying Savage is the answer, he obviously has a long ways to go before he's considered an NFL starter, but he's at least headed in the right direction and has potential. I wish Keenum all the best but will not be surprised if we grab a QB from the waiver wire when the final roster cuts are made.
He'll make the 53 man roster.

Savage needs time but he has real potential. He moved around a lot in college and never really got to settle down and get coached up in a system to have any kind of real body of work to look at. O'Brien saw a good arm and some potential and drafted him. The Texans just need a good camp cut to bridge the gap to Savage being on the field in a real game. Fitz is just plain bad and all the intelligence in the world doesn't make him a good qb. We have seen his best days as a qb and they weren't very good. Savage isn't ready for prime time yet and Fitz is never going to be ready for it.
Agreed, but it can get worse that Fitz.

If Keenum gets cut it will happen after Thursday's game. I could see Savage getting most of the playing time in Thursday's game and then Keenum getting the rest. I would feel more comfortable if Keenum wasn't cut even though he had a bad game last night.

Why the rush to cut Keenum?
What is having three QBs on the roster going to do; keep us from having a 7th DB or a 6th WR who, like the 3rd QB, will likely be inactive on game days anyway?
If keeping Keenum puts less immediate pressure on Savage gives him more time to mature, then I'd just as soon keep Keenum around. We've got all year to contrast and compare the two. And when (if?) "the light clicks" for Savage and he leapfrogs Keenum he can hit the road. Who knows (and I know this is a real stretch), he might be worth a 7th round pick for some team that has had really bad injury luck at the QB spot.

I'm really trying to not get myself too hyped up on Savage, but he just has the look. The way he looks on the field, especially the way he was slinging that ball last night. His size, stature, and overall presence just says protipical NFL QB. However, I wanna see what he does next game, before I proclaim him the real deal. If Fitz goes down, I would be much more comfortable with him than Case after last night.

don't worry how things are lookin now its gonna be the Fitz savage show this season

Keenum better have the game of his life this Thursday to stand a chance

Savage had a really good series against a bunch of Bronco's scrubs. Clearly we should cut Case? We're rolling in to this season with Fitzmagic, Keenum and Savage. It will happen, I feel pretty confident about that. Thursday's game will be about depth and special teams, that's it.

He is expensive because he is taking up a roster spot that can be used for depth at WR, CB, S, OLB
As I said earlier, its highly probable that the WR, CB, S, or OLB you speak of will be at the bottom of the depth chart and will not be activated on game day. Now we have ten spots in the practice squad instead of eight as in past seasons so any youngster we want to keep and develop can be stashed there.

Unless there was a rule change, the practice squad players are still subject to another team picking them up for their 53 man roster so you don't want a talented player there. That is why Savage makes the 53 rather than PS.

They feel threatened.

This is a statement I don't get. Basically nobody dislikes Keenum. He is a great, local kid that did awesome things in college and is playing here for a cheap contract. I am sure 95% of people on here would be ecstatic if he went out there and showed the world, that this is his job.

People that are talking about maybe cutting him are just people, that don't believe he can be a quality starting QB. And this offseason, he did very little to show something different. Yeah he improved a bit in scanning the field and maybe is a little better with recognizing blitzes (though he only played against vanilla defenses in preseason), but his throws have been of target a lot. Last game at least 2 throws should've been intercepted.

I would love for Keenum to start - but he hasn't shown much to get the job. And if we need his spot for another quality guy, I wouldn't feel bad about letting Keenum go and roll with Savage as the backup QB...

I'm not the one who brought up that there appears to be a group of people who can't wait for Keenum to be cut, that they would be glad, feel a bit of relief when it does happen.

Since I didn't bring it up & someone else did, that leads me to believe there is a bit of truth to it.

There are people here who don't want Keenum to get another shot because they are afraid he will succeed & they'll have to eat crow.

May not be you, but they're here.

I agree.
That is why I suggest putting one of these young WRs (Labhart for example) or DBs (Hal?) on the P/S instead of cutting Keenum. Our luck with injuries hasn't been so great.
It would be our misfortune that just about the time Fitz starts to actually get into a groove, he does one of his goofy QB slides and dislocates a shoulder. Now we're scrambling trying to find a backup for Savage and get them up to speed.
