2014 Texans Talk Mock Draft SELECTION

8 ( 223 ) Minnesota Vikings ( NCTexan ) ON THE CLOCK: 3:15pm - 7:15pm
9 ( 224 ) Buffalo Bills ( Blake )
10 ( 225 ) Carolina Panthers ( bah007 ) PM'ed
11 ( 226 ) St. Louis Rams ( RT22 )
12 ( 227 ) Detroit Lions ( steelbtexan )
13 ( 228 ) Tennessee Titans ( The Pencil Neck )

Btw, since we have now reached the 7th round, I figured I would gauge interest on having an UDFA round. Would basically be an 8th round with the original draft order. It would work the same way as the normal rounds except I would cut the clock in half and if you miss the pick then we just skip you. I ask because every time we do a mock like this, and it never fails, the second the last pick is made about 5 GM's post a list of the 15 UDFA's they just signed post draft.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' draft has concluded.

In free agency they added C Evan Dietrich-Smith, OT Anthony Collins, G Oniel Cousins, DE Michael Johnson, CB Alterraun Verner, QB Josh McCown, DT Clinton McDonald, LB Dane Fletcher, CB Mike Jenkins, TE Brandon Myers, WR Louis Murphy, while resigning LB Jonathan Casillas, CB Danny Gorrer and OT Jamon Meredith. Their high activity in FA allowed me some freedom in the draft room.

The team had only 5 draft picks to work with, but I feel like I got some good players for them to develop.

Round 1: CJ Mosley, MLB, Alabama
Round 2: Brandin Cooks, WR, Oregon State
Round 3: Loucheiz Purifoy, CB, Florida
Round 5: Dontae Johnson, FS/CB, NC State
Round 7: Tajh Boyd, QB, Clemson

Mosley gives the team a starting MLB from day one and allows LB Mason Foster to move outside and become more of a two down player. Cooks gives the team a slot receiver from day one and adds a punt and kick return option. Purifoy should compete with Mike Jenkins for the nickel. Johnson is a nice prospect to develop at either CB or FS. He will compete with McCray to backup Goldson and may take over for him in 2015, as Goldson hasn't been the player he was in SF. Tajh Boyd is another nice prospect to develop as the #3 QB.

Depth chart:

QB: Josh McCown, Mike Glennon, Tajh Boyd, Mike Kafka
LT: Anthony Collins, Jace Daniels
LG: Carl Nicks, Jason Foster
C: Evan Dietrich-Smith, Jason Foster
RG: Oniel Cousins, Patrick Omameh
RT: Demar Dotson, Jamon Meredith
WR: Vincent Jackson, Mike Williams, Brandin Cooks, Louis Murphy, Tommy Streeter
TE: Brandon Myers, Tom Crabtree, Luke Stocker
RB: Doug Martin, Mike James, Bobby Rainey
FB: Lonnie Pryor

DE: Michael Johnson, Adrian Clayborn, Da'Quan Bowers, William Gholston, Steven Means
DT: Gerald McCoy, Akeem Spence, Clinton McDonald, Everett Dawkins
OLB: Lavonte David, Mason Foster, Jonathan Casillas, Marvin Booker
MLB: CJ Mosley, Dane Fletcher
FS: Dashon Goldson, Kelcie McCray, Dontae Johnson
SS: Mark Barron, Keith Tandy
CB: Alterraun Verner, Jonathan Banks, Mike Jenkins, Louchiez Purifoy, Dontae Johnson, Deveron Carr

I wish I was able to address OL, TE and more LB depth, but I am happy with the draft.

Tampa Bay selects...

Tajh Boyd - QB - Clemson - ACC

Love this pick too.

Great Value.

lol, the forgotten QB.

That's straight value getting him in the 7th though. You're a team with serious ?'s at the QB position (Josh McCown, despite what Lovie Smith wants to believe, is a loser) and so you have snagged a guy in the 7th round that can compete with Sticks for the starting QB job at game #8 of the regular season.

Don't forget Mike Glennon. I went into this not buying that the Bucs would look to add a QB early. Glennon was a 59.4% passer with 2,608 yards passing and a 19/9 TD to INT ratio through 13 games in his rookie year last year.

Great Idea.

I wonder if those who want to do it could be given a random draft order to symbolise the less orderly nature of the UDFA period?

Solid effort with just 5 picks.

Yeah, I hear you. I called Glennon "sticks" because that's what he looks like to me. He's 6'7" and 225, I should have been more clear and not gave him a random nickname on the fly.

I believe that Lovie is truly committed to Journeyman Josh starting for the Bucs. I think they go 1-5 in the first 6 games, Glennon takes over game 7, has a bad outing (probably playing a hard team), and then rumors begin to swirl about Tahj being able to possibly supplant him.

I don't think he will and I don't think he's better (today), but I think he can push to become the backup and who knows (starter?) after they cut McCown after this year and Tahj and Sticks compete all offseason.

I pretty much see it going the same way. It's pretty clear that Lovie wants McCown to start, but I don't see that lasting. I expect Glennon to be pretty productive. It would serve the Bucs well to get a guy like Boyd in the later rounds to develop as a backup to replace McCown after his two year contract is up.

With the 20th pick in Round Six of the 2014 NFL draft the Arizona Cardinals select....

Joe Don Duncan - TE - Dixie State - Great Northwest Athletic Conference

I dunno how his game will translate to the pros but that's a bad ass football name if I've ever heard one.

Just realised that I am done with this draft.

Here are the final drafts for my two teams:

Washington

(34) Lamarcus Joyner - S - Florida State
(66) Billy Turner - OT - North Dakota State
(102) Telvin Smith - OLB - Florida State
(142) Terrence Mitchell - CB - Oregon
(178) Bruce Ellington - WR - South Carolina
(217) Devon Kennard - OLB - USC

I guess the Redskins signed Desean Jackson to fulfill the Bruce Ellington role in my draft.

9 ( 224 ) Buffalo Bills ( Blake ) ON THE CLOCK: 8:00pm - 10:00am
10 ( 225 ) Carolina Panthers ( bah007 ) PM'ed
11 ( 226 ) St. Louis Rams ( RT22 )
12 ( 227 ) Detroit Lions ( steelbtexan )
13 ( 228 ) Tennessee Titans ( The Pencil Neck )

steelbtexan PM'ed me a list for this next pick, but all the players on it have already been selected. Since that is the case I revert back to my previous proxy pick.

With the 213th pick the New York Jets select...

Avery Williamson - ILB - Kentucky - SEC

Thanks

I'm just getting in.

I like Williamson a lot.

Buffalo Bills select

Brock Vereen - S - Minnesota

Shane Vereens little brother. Not exactly sure where he will fit in the secondary just yet, but he could play both safety or even cornerback IMO. Shooting up draft boards a bit with a solid combine and good size.

Alright guys, final day, Let's stay strong. NO flaming out. I want to get Mr. Irrelevant in by lunch time, let's roll.

The Carolina Panthers select:

Dez Southward - S, Wisconsin

CF13--SEPT.+14--P44A++WISC-ARIZ+ST..jpeg

Southward is an incredible athlete who leaves Wisconsin after having been a four year starter there. He has been red-flagged due to a fracture to his C-5 vertebrae but at this point in the draft is certainly worth the risk.

He has only been playing football since his senior year of high school and is still raw. He is a devastating tackler who will contribute on special teams with his violent style of play.

He has the athleticism of a CB/FS but the skill set of a SS so I see him as a guy who can be versatile and move around to make plays.

With the 227th pick in the TT Mock Draft the Detroit Lions select Kevin Graf, OT, Southern California, Pac 10.

Graf has good feet and is an above avg pass blocker. He needs to get stronger. The Lions are a little thin on the OL after Jason Fox left in FA. Graf is a good developmental prospect and certain worth the pick at this point in the draft.

14 ( 229 ) Dallas Cowboys ( Thetexanator ) ON THE CLOCK: 10:30am - 2:30pm
15 ( 230 ) Pittsburgh Steelers ( Rock N Randy )
16 ( 231 ) Dallas Cowboys ( Thetexanator )
17 ( 232 ) Indianapolis Colts ( Texian )
18 ( 233 ) New York Jets ( steelbtexan )
19 ( 234 ) Miami Dolphins ( Htownfan32 )

Proxy pick for The Pencil Neck via PM.

The Tennessee Titans select...

Jeff Janis - WR - Saginaw Valley St. - Great Lakes IAC

A tall (6'3", 219#) receiver who's surprisingly fast (4.42). He's not afraid to take a hit and if he takes a hit, he holds on to the ball. He's a hard-working, studious guy.

He's a small school prospect who hasn't worked against top-level talent. He's got to work on his routes and his hands (which are only average.) He's a guy that's faster than quick and he's got to work on that.

I think Whiz will have fun working with him.

At this point in the draft? I think this is a perfect place for him.

Good stuff. I always like to hear about these kind of guys.

I wonder why he didn't get any better collegiate offers. Generally 6'3 and 4.4 speed will qualify you a college I've heard of.

He got 0 scholarship offers from Division I schools.

And then, when he went to Saginaw Valley (which was close to his home), he was redshirted as a freshman. I'm going to assume that he had a growth spurt and became a gym-rat and worked on his speed.

He's the all time leading receiver in GLIAC history. Which... isn't saying that much but it's something.

Proxy pick for the Cowboys after going over the deadline.

The Dallas Cowboys select...

Aaron Lynch - DE - South Florida - AAC

15 ( 230 ) Pittsburgh Steelers ( Rock N Randy ) ON THE CLOCK: 2:30pm - 6:30pm
16 ( 231 ) Dallas Cowboys ( Thetexanator )
17 ( 232 ) Indianapolis Colts ( Texian )
18 ( 233 ) New York Jets ( steelbtexan )
19 ( 234 ) Miami Dolphins ( Htownfan32 )

Pittsburgh Steelers select ...

Tevin McDonald, S, Eastern Washington

"The safety position runs in the McDonald family, and Tevin should be the next member of the family to play in the NFL. His father, Tim, played 13 years in the NFL, while the St. Louis Rams drafted Tevin’s older brother, T.J., during the third round of the 2013 draft.

While his father and brother played at the University of Southern California, Tevin chose to attend crosstown rival UCLA. He played at UCLA for two years, recording 130 tackles and four interceptions, before being dismissed from the team in March due to a violation of team rules. He had also been suspended for the 2012 Holiday Bowl after he failed his third drug test, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Tevin McDonald transferred to Eastern Washington University

He has solid instincts and, despite being smaller than both his father and brother at listed measurables of 5’11″ and 190 pounds, he plays with the same physical demeanor that his bloodlines are known for.

Tevin McDonald is a prototypical free safety who can be a solid centerfielder, capable of delivering a big hit or provide good run support."

This completes the Pittsburgh Steelers draft

(1) project rusher with potential
(2) big, three level receivers
(1) big, strong project QB

I got a good mix and a decertify of talent and I could see all my guys making the aging roster that is the Steelers

Pleased with the results and outcome of the Steelers 2014 draft class

20 ( 235 ) Oakland Raiders ( Rock N Randy )

and the reason Jeff Janis was only #2 on the Colts draft board is because of the one person who was able to shut Jeff Janis down.

With the 232nd pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the Indianapolis Colts select: Brandon Dixon, CB, NW Mizzou St., 5114, 203.

I think it was Dixon's 4.41 40 that was able to shut down Janis' 4.42 40. :)

Jay Bromley was #3 on the Colts board.

59/ Gabe Jackson, OG
90/ James Gayle, OLB
166/ Bryan Stork, OC
203/ Shembo Prince, ILB
232/ Brandon Dixon, CB

Good draft.

As a complete and unrelated side note... what do you mean by a "decertify" of talent?

With the 233rd pick in the TT Mock Draft the NY Jets select Carlos Fields Jr, Winston-Salem.

Fields is a fast instinctive OLB who can cover or rusher the passer. He is a little undersized. If you like Telvin Smith then you Should like Fields Jr.

The Miami Aquatic Mammals select....

James Wilder Jr. - RB - Florida State - ACC

Miami finally gets a RB, one of their needs going into this draft. With an upgraded offensive line, I think Wilder can become the bruising runner to complement Lamar Miller.

Good pick.

I really agonized over whether to take him or not and finally went other directions.

I figured the Dolphins wanted to complement Lamar Miller and Daniel Thomas. That whole experiment really didn't work out. Lamar Miller has the potential to be a good RB but he is not a bruiser by any means, and I think Miami will want to have a bruiser for short yardage situations. With an improved O-line, I think we will see a different, better performance from Tannehill, Wallace, and Miller altogether.
