Another mock...with a trade up

I'm trading a 3rd and 5th to get back up into the second round:

1) Teddy Bridgewater, QB

I like Teddy here. I've played with other possibilities, and to me TB is the best QB in this draft hands down.

2) Kyle Van Noy, OLB

Smart instinctive LB. Would fit in well with this group and would immediately push for a starting job. I think he's already a better player than Mercilus, so unless he's improved a lot over the off season (which is entirely possible), I'd expect him to get his spot taken.

2) Lamarcus Joyner, DB

I wanted to trade up into the second to grab a top level prospect. I played with the idea of drafting Tre Mason among some others. But to me this pick made the most sense. Like Van Noy, he has a high motor, is instinctive and makes plays. Versatile player that can probably play all positions in the secondary with some measure of effectiveness. Best fit is probably in the slot of at safety.

4) Daniel McCullers, NT

Huuuuuuuge NT. Should immediately push for playing time. Will make it extremely hard to run up the middle and should keep our ILB's clean. Should command double teams inside and be able to tie up multiple blockers on a consistent basis.

5) Charles Leno, OT

Very athletic OT with long arms. Good feet as well. Good late round prospect. Is a better pass protector than run blocker at this point. Needs to bulk up and get stronger, but would be a good late round depth player who could eventually become a starter.

5) Andrew Jackson, ILB

Active and aggressive ILB. May actually go higher than 5th round, but is currently ranked lower by some ranking boards. Well built player with good athleticism. Plays with energy, aggression and passion.

6) Taylor Hart, DE

Big strong DE. Played in the PAC 10. Would need to pack on a little weight, but at 6'6" 281 he'd provide good depth at the 5 tech position.

6) Colt Lyerla, TE

Worth. The. Risk.

7) Eathyn Manumaleuna, DL

Older player at 25, but he's a strong high energy player. Would provide good depth on the DL. Moves down the line really well to chase down ball carriers. Another solid depth guy for Romeo's versatile defense.

No wr or RB. I figure that we can grab a a FA RB, get some UDFA's. Arian should give us at least a few games. Dennis Johnson was solid at the end of last year. Deji Kareem is ok. I think we can be fine there without spending a pick at RB.

At WR with Keyshawn Martin, Devier Posey and potentially Alec Lemon I think we'll be ok behind Dre and Deandre. Plus I think TE's will play a major role again in our offense. Also, Colt Lyerla in my mock does give you another receiving option.

I know a lot of people won't like the trade up into the second for Joyner, but I like the guy's game.

First 4 guys are prospects I love.

Lyerla won't be their in the 6th I reckon. Someone will take a shot at him earlier than that.

I like your first 3 guys, but NT's work off of leverage and a 6'07" NT is going to have alot of trouble keeping his pad level down. McCullers height is going to work against him.

I like Hart in the 6th as long as he can add weight without losing athleticism.

I've watched McCullers play and he's a load in the middle. He's going to have to work on keeping his pads down, but he's two inches taller than watt And about 60-70 lbs heavier.

A few years ago Jacksonville had John Henderson and Marcus stroud at DT. 6'7" and 6'6".

Can't just look at the height. McCullers is definitely going to have to work on some things but his height isn't going to keep him from being effective.

McCullers height isn't the only reason but it's a big factor. He's not flexible or athletic enough to get leverage on shorter players. He is always playing at a disadvantage because he gives up leverage on nearly every play. I've seen him get pushed back by guys 80 lbs lighter than him.

I really don't think he has a future as anything other than a depth player. He's a huge man but that doesn't mean anything if he can't use his size effectively.

Could not disagree more.

His athleticism is a highlight for him being a man that size.

And we're talking about a 4th round pick here. There are going to be some negatives. But I completely disagree with your take.

Here is a video against Bama: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuFq87B0RNs

Does he win every match up? No. but he is a force in the middle of that defense. Bama rarely runs right up the gut...It's stretches and draws and he still shows athleticism to handle blocks and run down the line.

I remember a lot of people didn't like Dontari Poe when he was coming out. Because of his competition and production. But if you look at how he handled his match ups he dominated...He was unblockable...litterally. McCullers doesn't dominate like Poe did but 1) he's facing SEC Olinemen 2) we're talking about a 4th round pick here.

I think McCullers is excellent value in the 4th and with some NFL seasoning he should turn into a force.

I didn't say he wasn't a great athlete for his size. He can move. I said he isn't athletic enough or flexible enough to cover up his natural disadvantage in leverage. With his height he needs more flexibility in the ankles, knees, and hips if he is going to get under guys. And he just doesn't appear to have it.

In that highlight against Bama I count six plays where they run right past him in his gap. He looks average and doesn't truly stand out until you get to the last three plays of the highlight (when Bama was starting to put back ups in). We're talking about this guy as a two gap NT and he's being blocked by one man on most of those plays. He moves and chases the play well but on very few plays does he actually make an impact. #34 and #56 are the only Tennessee players in that clip that stand out.

I didn't like Poe as much as most when he came out but did acknowledge that with proper coaching he could get better. I never challenged his potential, only where his starting point would be and if he could make up that ground. I would have liked him to be more dominant playing at that level. He had far better tools than McCullers. I also didn't think that Poe was a pure two gap NT. I thought he would be better as a 1, 3, or 5. And for most of his rookie year it looked like I was right. He did next to nothing for most of his rookie year before he started to catch up to the learning curve. When you take a guy #11 you shouldn't have to wait a whole year for him to make an impact. With that said, he has come around and played very well, answering all the questions I had about him as a prospect.

McCullers reminds me of Terrence Cody. Massive human being who is very tough for most college O-Linemen to move, but doesn't really have any functional football skills that translate to the NFL. Being big isn't a skill. Terrence Cody was big, but never really developed any sort of football skills in Baltimore and washed right the f' out.

That is who I see with McCullers as well.

I didn't know what you thought of Poe until I actually read through the thread...

But I did see somewhere that you said he'd be a bust.

I'm just saying, you can't look at these guys as finished products. Poe was a first round pick. We're talking about a 4th rounder here. Cody was a 2nd round pick.

The later you get, theoretically, the prospects aren't as good. We're talking about a 4th or 5th rounder here. I think if you believe McCullers isn't worth a 4th or 5th you are wrong. All these mid to late round guys can have their games ripped apart.

But it's cool, we can agree to disagree. I think McCullers would be an excellent fit in this 34 as I thought Poe would have been in Wade's 34.

If forced to make a prediction at that time, I would have said that Poe would never live up to the expectations of where he would go in the draft, so yes a bust. I did not think he was worthy of the #11 pick in the draft. In his first year it looked pretty clear that I was right. As time has gone on, I am forced to admit that he looks to be on his way to proving me wrong.

I never denied that Poe had 1st round skills, only that he didn't play like a 1st rounder. It was always known that he was not a finished product entering the draft.

Cody was different. He was beloved around these parts and I never understood why. At least with Poe you could see why people were enamored. Cody had a NT body but absolutely no football skills. This is where I stand with McCullers, although I do believe that McCullers has more ability than Cody.

I rated Poe as a 2nd rounder. Cody as a 6th rounder.

I rate McCullers as a 5th rounder and have no problem with us drafting him. I just think he will need some real work to develop the necessary skills to play in the NFL, because right now he is just a giant man wearing pads.
