Jeff Matthews, QB

eriadoc

Texan-American
Out of Cornell. Anyone know anything at all about him? I know nothing, but ran across this scouting report.

Overview

With former Delaware Blue Hen Joe Flacco guiding the Ravens to Super Bowl glory, the timing may never be better for an FCS QB to establish himself as one of the top passers of his respective class. The likeliest candidate to accomplish this is Mathews, whose strong, accurate arm pops off tape, already making him a hot name in scouting circles.

He was named the Ivy League's Offensive MVP in 2011 and finished second last year despite battling nagging injuries. A strong finish to his career could result in a trip to Mobile, Ala. as he's already among the FCS prospects on the Senior Bowl's Watch List.

He has the size and arm strength that will give him a fighting chance in the NFL, but his inconsistent footwork, which greatly affects his ball placement, continues to be a problem. (10/15/13)

Analysis

Strengths: He reads defenses quickly, and physically-speaking, is a man amongst boys at this level, firing passes to all levels with the velocity, trajectory and accuracy to dominate.

Weaknesses: Mathews takes most of his snaps out of shotgun and his development under center is one of the biggest obstacles he'll face on his way to the NFL. He possesses just average athleticism for the position and, of course, has never seen the likes of an SEC pass rush.

Looks like he likely won't get drafted. Maybe BO'B's next Brady project?

He may go in the 7th but I don't think he has a NFL future.

His potential (not very high) vs. the time it would take to get him there (a long time) is not going to be worth it.

Have read a few scouting reports and they all seem to say similar things - basically, he has the physical tools, which you can't teach. But like I said, never seen the guy play and know nothing about him, so I just figured some of y'all might have watched him a little. Thanks for the responses. :)

I've only seen him once, but like Texian, I didn't see a NFL player.

Nice format and presentation! You might want to add some basic numbers (on screen) like weight, height and 40 times for a hang your hat type of thing.

Here's an analysis by National Football Post of Mathews based on 2012 tape. How would you compare his "maturation" points through the 2013 season?

Thanks Cloak! I watched him live 2 times this year (Yale & Penn) and the team around him wasn't as good…but what was evident this season was his ability to extend the play more (which explains the amount of sacks) and also showing some mobility (by necessity)

Being at the games, I kept close eye on him drive after drive..was always upbeat & encouraging despite having minimal offensive success that day (Yale). At the Penn game, his last one, played the loosest I've seen him play which was a good thing.

And he was the better out of the 3 QBs at the E/W Shrine Game this year throughout the week of practices. I want to say he had about 5 or 6 'WOW' throws from the scouts/bloggers/analysts

Love your work as always Em keep pumping these suckers out!

Mathews looks like a very worthwhile project, has some of Brady's mannerisms but never seems to throw the deep ball.

Thanks BL! Last season he threw the deep ball a lot more b/c of the talent at WR..he had Luke Tasker (Steve Tasker's son) who now plays for the Hamilton Tiger Cats. This season, it was pitiful how the receivers couldn't get separation
