Blake Bortles

George O'Leary doesn't see Blake Bortles as 'franchise' QB

O'Leary's definition of a franchise quarterback might be a little more lofty than others, but nevertheless, he doesn't see one in the 2014 draft, and that includes his own player.

"I think a franchise quarterback comes out once every 10 years, and he came out last year in (Andrew) Luck," O'Leary said on Houston area radio show MaD Radio. "The ones I see succeed are understudies."

O'Leary is a believer in his potential, if not sold on his ability to have an explosive rookie season.

"Blake has all the things you're looking for in a quarterback as far as size and mental capacity to handle a lot of things," O'Leary said. "But that first year is tough because those guys are moving a lot faster than the college guys. ... Blake is going to be fine-tuned to what he needs to get done in the pro ranks. He's a quick study and a quick learner."

FWIW, same people who said I was crazy for mocking Eric Fisher No. 1 last year at this time are saying the same w/ my Bortles to HOU pick...

The term "franchise QB" has become too subjective to have any true meaning. Is Bortles a franchise QB? Don't know but he's a top-10 pick IMO

What does that even mean? Its pointless dribble. So what that they have the #1 pick again. That doesnt mean anything when everything has changed. Current roster, available free agents, rookie contracts, coaching staff. There is no David Carr and no Julius Peppers. Stop pretending like this is groundhog day and we are reliving the past. It doesnt work like that.

So what? A decade of failure is what and the thought that BoB is about to repeat the same mistake over again is what.

I'm in the Clowney corner. No QB is even close to 1-1 in this draft.IMHO

If Rick picks TB/JM/BB then he better give him the tools to succeed. Unlike what they did with Carr. Even if that means drafting

1. Bortles, since this is a Bortles thread.
2. Austin Serfain Jenkins
3. JuWaun James
4. Josh Huff
5. Jon Halapio
6. Isaiah Crowell

In fact after watching last yrs dismal offensive performance, i'm not sure that I wouldn't pick all offense and use FA/Late rd picks to ad a Fatty/S/CB/OLB.

Atleast your young QB would have a chance to succeed unlike Carr. The Offense should become dominant in 2015 and then you can fill in the rest of the defense.

Draft Beau Allen with the com 5th, try to get a nickel CB and Orakpo in FA and the defense should be good enough to go 10-6 even with a rookie QB, because the schedule is so weak.

February = slow. The O'Leery quote is getting blown out of proportion. If he said Bortles was a once in 10 year talent people would kill him

If we draft Bortles I'll be fine with it. Obrian knows what kind of QB fits his style better than any of us. Hell I've been torn between these three QB's and Clowney since before we even officially knew we had the number one pick. I see the positive in all of them. I'm not hitching my wagon to any of them. I want to go into next season excited to be a Texan fan again. I want to enjoy next year even if there we do take more than a few lumps with a new young QB.

It's been to long since I have really enjoyed this team. So let the chips fall where they may. I'm all in again no matter who we pick.

Having said that, my money is on Manziel. I believe he's going to impress the hell out of everyone in his interviews.

I'll be pretty pissed if if we drafted Bortles honestly....... There are certain guys with his size that I had a good feel of knowing they would be good at the next level. Big Ben is one of them. I've never gotten that feel for this guy and I've watched him play quite a bit over the past couple of years. Some guys just have the "it" factor to me, and he's never given me that vibe. This will be a colossal mistake if we take him with the 1st overall pick. Much worse than the Carr debacle. It kind of reminds me of college recruiting when a guy shoots up the ratings based on "potential".

It cant be worse than the Carr debacle.

Whoops, I forgot about JaMarcus Russell.

Bortles just screams out Tim Couch to me for some reason. A guy who honestly could probably be ok, but the pressure of being a high pick is just too much to handle.

Agreed

Except Bortles wouldn't be starting with an expansion franchise.

Something just doesn't feel right about the top 3 QB's in this draft.

Out of the 3 QBs though Bortles is the one guy who really doesn't jump out to me at all. People keep talking about his size and frame. Wow! Very impressive! I can see Teddy being successful in the league...... I can see Manziel making an impact in the league. I can't see it with Bortles..... He's that girl you see in the bar that looks great, dances her butt off, reminds you of a Vicky Secret model, and then when you get her home find out she has fake boobs, eye lashes, and pimples all over her face. And the great body you thought she had is no good because she's as stiff as a board.

Well hopefully Rick Smith and O'Brien won't be drafting 6 beers and 5 shots deep...

Hah, good stuff. Maybe her body isn't that great because she was wearing shape ups (lying wench).

I digress... Bortles is gonna be a good pro. I don't think he has nearly the upside of the other 2, but this guy is a gamer. He would constantly mess up early in games (which I absolutely hate), but he would never let it linger and push it aside long enough to march down the field and get the W (which I absolutely love).

I think too much is being made of his size though and I'll definitely agree with you there. People talk about this protypical size all the time, but 2 of the last 4 Super Bowl champs were NOT proto size in Aaron (short) and RusWil (shorter).

BIG Ben has 2 Super Bowl rings....just saying

(4) last possession, game winning drives is indicative of handling pressure extremely well. And he did it very cool, calm and collected. The #1 attribute and ability in draft evaluation. The size, arm and ability to run are added bonus. This #1 attribute is something you would not have found in David Carr's resume.

Come Sunday's in Reliant when Bortles delivers the WIN with game winning drives (hope it's not Jacksonville)....all will be forgiven.

Well hopefully Rick Smith and O'Brien won't be drafting 6 beers and 5 shots deep...

Funny!....some past drafts it appears that is exactly what happened! :)

Obrien is going to F this pick up. Ne coaches and GMs who F up the first pick get fired after three years.

Did you read the part where I said I had a feel Big Ben would be good? Guess not.

I watched 2 of his comeback wins. The one against Louisville was just an ok performance to me. Their running back took over at the end of the game. He was the main factor there. The Temple game I've already addressed. He was not very good for much of that game and it took a one handed catch by their receiver to bail him out. Temple was terrible last year too by the way so it should have never even been a contest.

Many folks see your belittling critique of Bortles GAME WINNING DRIVE in LOUISVILLE against the #1 DEFENSE in College Football as nothing more than your bias and excuses for your LOVE of Teddy. Because seriously, only someone severely smitten would make such comments.

LOVE for Teddy? Do you always talk out of your ass or does your mouth work too? It could possibly have nothing to do with the fact that I was more impressed by their running game in that 2nd half right? Or that Bortles just doesn't strike me as the type of guy who will be great at the next level? Get his piece out of your mouth dude.

If you've been paying attention you'd know I don't have a love for Teddy Bridgewater. You're the one who's infatuated with a QB in this draft not me.

Lately I am focusing more on how each of the 3 QBs would be in season two and I am leaning more towards Bortles who has edge over JM with size.

Spoken like a man with a lesser education. An educated person can carry on an adult conversation without the use middle school vernacular, insults and foul language.

Why does it seem like you have decided that in the last 2 months you would show up and pick fights with anyone who doesnt agree with you? Can you get through one week without intentionally trying to piss off everyone?

Because you're really aware of what kind of education I have right? I will say one thing for you Texian...... You definitely provide me with many laughs on a daily basis. Keep up the good work buddy!

Bortles has the most upside of the 3. (Size/Arm strength/Mobility combo) IMHO But he also has the lowest floor.

Cause the first month he was obsessed with Manziel . :whip:

I think many of us who put lots of time into researching players often become too attached to our "guys" and when someone "attacks" them or our position(s), we respond perhaps as we should not. What concerns me is when other posters rather than using info to rebut or disagree respond to that great old recess ground tactic of name calling or use terms like "crazy, idiotic or stupid". It degrades to trash talking "your momma's so ugly.."

We each should realize that there are points on almost all topics regardless of forum, we will just not agree on. That is extremely cool with me as I like to ponder other views than mine.

Denounce the position, not the one offering the position.

I feel like, although some deserved, this forum is overly rude to him and now he gets real defensive and overly aggressive too quick.

Looking at this situation with most, he says something a little off putting or foolish because he's defensive and it's overly reacted too or he's just outright attacked, then it's a fight.

Not that he's not wrong, because he definitely is sometimes, but if people were always mocking you and attacking you on a subject you felt strongly about you or I might act in a similar overly defensive matter as well.

I cannot argue this and agree.

Good stuff, well said.

I don't pick fights Blake. I do respond to those who want to pick fights with me however.

I love it when people make things up. I am CLEARLY smitten with Teddy Bridgewater, but not one quote can be provided to support this pie out of the sky statement.

I don't know what kind of education you have. I do know how you express your self. It is often said that those who have to resort to insults, name calling and cuss words often do so only because they don't know how to express themselves in any other way.

So there you go, at least you can say I have some objectivity and clearly not Smitten with Teddy Club. Don't forget my defense of McCarron too.

I think there's more information to be had before we make up our minds . I think your first guy was Murphy . :dancer:

I've worked with some Ivy League graduates who do everything you just listed. I need to send them an e-mail advising them to get a refund on their money paid to their institutions.

And I'm sorry the word "ass" is so offensive to you. In the future I will use the word butt to not offend the oh so sensitive Texian.

That makes two of us.

You're the genius who said it...... so why can't you provide evidence of this LOVE I have for him? That's right....... Because it was just easier for you to just make something up rather than understand I don't like your guy.

I actually started the season back in August favoring David Fales. Murphy? Oh Trent Murphy. YES. I had watched a game were Murphy did his best JJ Watt impersonation and was all gaga the next next day or so before coming to my senses.

Murphy with Rac isn't so strange in the 2nd .

I wish I could remember what each poster has said for the last 3 months. I can't even remember what was said the last three posts.

I agree on some level that Bortles has the highest upside based on size. But I think all three have high upsides (franchise qb). At some point, if Bridgewater can be the next Rodgers, Bortles the next Big Ben, and Manziel Steve young in Drew Bree's body, your kind of splitting hAirs. Two of the top 5 qbs in the league are small. Brees and Rodgers aren't big guys, yet they arguably as good as any of them.

Rodgers is like 6'3. He is more than capable size wise. Either way him and Brees are two of the best of all time already. I could see Bortles becoming as good as Big Ben. I don't see Manziel or Bridgewater being anywhere near close to as good as Rodgers or Brees though. Of course Brees and Rodgers are both way ahead of Big Ben to though. I'd take a Big Ben retread though.

I don't disagree when you get into the realm of 3+ inches of difference. Below that it is swamped by other factors. Thinking 6'4" is a significant advantage over 6'3" is silly IMO.

I think the best scramblers are shorter because they move quicker than the taller DL . Yes there are exceptions but a pocket presence at 6'2 is much better than a statue at 6'5 .
