AP Source:NFL gets Thursday TV bids

SEATTLE (AP) -- All four of the NFL's network partners have bid on the Thursday night television package, a person with knowledge of the bidding process told The Associated Press on Sunday.

The league has used its NFL Network to televise the games, but recently put up the 13-game series for bids and received them from NBC, Fox, CBS and ESPN. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the bidders are not being made public.

Turner Sports has also bid, and there's a strong possibility ESPN would put the games on ABC should it be chosen by the league.

It's generally not good for the teams and players. It's a quick turnaround, and it's difficult for coaches to gameplan that quickly after a Sunday game. Tuesday is the day of the week players are off, so if you only have Monday and Wednesday part of Thursday to gameplan and practice for your next opponent, you won't be as well prepared. It's even more difficult for the visiting team, because they have to travel. On top of that, the league does nothing to guarantee a bye week before or after, so it wears down the players more than necessary.

I think if the NFL really wants Thursdays to become a staple of the NFL schedule, they need to guarantee a bye week for both teams prior to the game. That way, teams have all the time needed to prepare and travel for the game, and they get a few extra days on the backend to prepare for the next game. If they did that, then there wouldn't be any issues, but having teams turnaround that quickly is bad and will not produce quality football.

I honestly love almost everything about the Thursday night games with the exception of opening weekend, and that's part fantasy related too. First of all, the NFL season should start on a Sunday. It just should (A Monday night game or two is fine though). I've always wanted to try to get a fantasy league to do the draft in Vegas, and a Thursday night opener makes that very difficult (although I know there would be ways to work it). Ideally, we get there Friday night (or Saturday morning), watch (bet on) some College games, watch (not bet on) some MLB games, draft Saturday night, watch football all day Sunday, play golf on Monday, watch the Monday night games, and head home Tuesday AM. It's a fantasy, but then again, it is fantasy football. They don't play a Thursday game in weeks 16 & 17, and they don't play a Monday night game week 17. For pete's sake - they used to skip Sunday night games for the World Series. Skip the Thursday night game for week one also.

As to the other Thursday nights, it's one game (other than Thanksgiving of course), and it shouldn't be a problem unless your league requires the lineup to be completely set before the first game. If that's the case, I'd say either change the rules, or find a different league to play in.

Oh all of this I understand even have discussed before. Selfish me likes another night of football during the week.
