Kelvin Benjamin

I wouldn't complain about a WR at some point as a clear cut BPA .... but would really like to fill some holes at other spots as there are so many spots in need of help and we could have more depending upon who they resign of their FA's and who ends up being cut for cap purposes.

QB , RT , ILB , RB , CB & S all need help right now.

QB & RT are a given right now ....

Keo & McCain getting meaningful playing time ?

Tate gone Cushing & who ?!! (I did like Tarpinian tho)

DE , DT, TE & OG could have spots open.

Ninja , Mitchell ?? Do they get resigned ?!

OD & Wade Smith are huge questions going forward.


We also have FA to fill holes .... but that's an expensive route and considering the cap situation and the need to lock up a couple guys ... I'm just not sure that WR is an option in this draft as its one of the deeper positions on the team.
 
Great find BL, I am shocked to see him come out tbh, maybe his age played a part. I think he would be great at # 33 but only if we have a trade giving us more picks. In my trade down mock, I choose a WR but in straight 1-1 & 2-1, I say no as we need too much.

In any trade down mock you risk too much, IMO (imagine the player you target will still be there, in this case the franchise QB) while in trading up into first or second your targeting a specific player who is there. Big difference.
 
Let just say that if I had to choose between Hopkins and Benjamin, I wouldn't know which guy I'd pick at 27.

It's hard not to take a play maker.
 
This is more about projection. Late first early second that is a value play. Long term he is Calvin Johnson type of WR, yes/no? So how do you pass? Andre is not going to be here much longer, this deep WR class pushes him down futher than normal & while Hopkins flashes his own upside, strikes me more of as a solid #2 like he was @ Clemson behind Watkins. So you grab your future #1 & give him the opportunity to develop under Andre Johnson. Doesn't hurt to build chemistry with fellow rookie QB Teddy Bridgewater either!

I love Benjamin's potential but, in that scenario, keep in mind that he is 2 years older than Hopkins and Nuk is already much more polished as a route runner and in the nuances of playing WR. Thus far, Benjamin has just been a big guy who can run fast. Then again, so was Calvin Johnson in college.

I didn't know that Benjamin is two years older than Hopkins; even so, I'm liking Benjamin's potential better. That doesn't mean we can tell which one will eventually have a better NFL career.
I just prefer a really big target who's nearly as fast as the smaller guy and can run routes the way most big guys can't.
JMO, Benjamin has the better potential of becoming a force than Hopkins does.
His size just can't be ignored .
 
benjamin is a total project. the only thing he has on hopkins is size, and for a man that big he's pretty soft. doesn't look like he likes to block, and when a CB gets physical with him he tends to fold. motivation is a big question with him, along with his inconsistent hands. he needs the right coaching to bring the best out of him.

other than that, match up nightmare physically...especially in the red zone.

He's actually a good blocker, all of the FSU WRs are. We had so much talent at that spot this year and last year that you basiclaly don't see the field unless you block well. He does struggle with press coverage though and his hands can be inconsistent at times. He improved a lot on all of these things in the past year but they still need improvement.

Absolutely agree. The question is, does he reach that potential? Hopkins is going to be a good player in the NFL. Will he be a star? That's up for debate. Benjamin, on the other hand, will likely either be the next Calvin Johnson or the next Mike Williams.
 
I'm just wondering what kind of WR's we'll be looking for. Look at NEs WR's. Seems like they prefer quick twitch smaller guys.

I think we need a burner in this draft. I think Benjamin has postential to do well in this draft, but I'm not quite sure he'll fit what O'Brien likes. I'd watch out for Robinson from Penn State. Doesn't fit the burner mold that I was talking about, but if we do pick up an extra 2nd round pick it wouldn't surprise me if we snagged him.
 
I kind of like Rashad Greene from FSU in this offense a little bit more. Try to grab a #1 WR next year. Greene brings value and special teams, will probably be available in the 3rd or 4th,is more explosive than Martin, and would make him expendable.

I'm always wary of these big guys who get by in college just because college CBs don't know what to do with them.

He dominated Purifoy, but outside of that he is basically just good for one big play per game.

He's a decent blocker, but with his size he should be murdering DBs. He's a lazy route runner, but he's never had a reason to work hard at it. He doesn't have natural hands, but good enough all things considered.

This is a guy who needs to be pushed. If he gets an elite QB, he's All Pro. If he doesn't he will disappear.

Couldn't agree more. Allen Robinson will be a stud. I don't care what his measurements or his 40 time are, this guy just gets open on every single play.

Rashad Greene isn't the best athlete on FSU's offense, but he is the best football player. And he fits the slot WR mold in the NFL perfectly.

I do too. If Greene were coming out I would be a proponent of his at #33, obviously depending on who's there. I don't see him slipping to 3rd or 4th round. Although he dropped a pass in Nc game, he has good hands. He is consistent, always a factor in games and he's been good for years now. I think he'll be a 1st round pick next year barring injury. He has elite speed and explosiveness. He can go long or turn a short pass into a long gain. He is only lacking elite size basically.

Ten years ago he is a third round pick. In today's NFL he is a first rounder. Put him in the slot and he will get you a first down every time the defense tries to blitz your QB.

I liken Benjamin to Alshon Jeffery, natural receiving skills, big catching radius, has power & some quickness to make people miss. They posses prototypical NFL size for position & Kelvin Benjamin is even bigger edition. I don't see how that doesn't translate to a first round grade & if there #33 has to be in bpa discussion.

I meant Greene.

I think Benjamin is off the board in the top 30, no question.
 
I get a very Stephen Hill vibe from this guy. Remember when everyone was mocking him to the Texans, and we went with Mercilus instead? Hell, even I think I mocked him to us once.

He's probably closer to Demaryius Thomas than Stephen Hill. Not quite the prospect Thomas was but somewhat close. I never liked Hill and I remember being dogged around here quite frequently for suggesting that Alshon Jeffery and Rueben Randle would be better pros. Both guys were drafted after Hill and have been better players, btw. :stirpot:
 
We simply have too many needs to throw a high draft pick at a WR. With our cap situation we need to address as much NEED as possible in the draft.

Although I love size and speed, it's there late (hopefully where we're drafting) in the first round every single year.

In "another Texans message board" 2 years ago I was banging the table for Alshon Jeffrey. Last year C Patterson.

Nuk isn't the future Dre replacement to me. He is a great complementary piece. We still need that replacement, but hopefully we can wait one more year.

He is impressive, that is for sure. Right now I see him as a late 1, early 2. People will think of megatron when they see this guy during the combine, although there is just something missing from Benjamin which keeps him from being a top 10 draft prospect.

I tend to think that our WR core is pretty talented. Maybe a late round guy to come in and compete.

AJ/Hopkins/Martin/Posey/Bonner and some other young guys.

The Carolina Panthers must continue to surround Cam Newton with weapons. After a year in which Carolina boasted one of the best defenses in the NFL, it is time to shore up the offense. With Steve Smith in the twilight of his career and the emergence Brandon LaFell, the Panthers would do well to bolster the wide receiver corps.

Benjamin fits the bill perfectly here. His huge 6'5" frame would be a welcomed target for Newton. His big-play ability would also ease the burden of losing Smith once he decides to retire.

With other receivers such as Sammy Watkins and Mike Evans looking to go off the board early in the draft, Benjamin becomes the best fit for the Panthers at 29th overall.
