Jared Crick vs. Draft Pick?

Wolf6151

Provided we lose Antonio Smith in FA, do you think the Texans will give Jared Crick a year to prove his worth at DE or do they use a high draft pick 2nd or 3rd on a replacement and keep Crick as a backup? I'm working on a mock and wondering if the Texans will give Crick a chance since we have so many other holes on the team and limited draft picks with which to fill them. Thanks.

If they stay with the 3/4 defense they may give him a shot at de, but if they switch to a 4/3 he would move inside to dt. Either way I think they draft or sign someone to compete with him for playing time.

if we lose ninja then this defence is screwed!

so yes we better spend a 2nd or 3rd rounder on a DE or DT, depending if we play a 4-3 or 3-4

Crick is a depth player on a championship level team.

So, yeah they need to draft atleast 2 DL, a true pass rusher to help Watt is a must.

WolverineFan/BL mock selected Aaron Donald, Pittsburgh with 2nd rd. pick to replace Antonio Smith & I'm a big fan of Ninja. Also like Crick (4th) & Jamison (undrafted out of Michigan & was just coming back from injury). If Texans where to restructure Smith contract I would probably look @ OLB or a stud FS. Swearinger looks like a strong safety to me, replacing Glover Quin, but with Manning out there is a huge drop off with Keo & Pleasent. Long answer, yes, maybe, no all depends if they keep Ninja if so depth is needed much more in secondary, IMO.

I hate losing AS. He has started in 78/80 games for us. Having said that I think part of being a successful franchise is being able to fill lost production with young talent.

I've not been even a little impressed with Crick. Disappointed actually. I think he's depth at best and not a guy you want to have to start.

Lets just not even think about losing Antonio Smith in FA. It would be problematic.

He did have 5 sacks (less than one every three games)& he had 30 combined tackles or less than two per game. Maybe we can replace that?

This is excellent thread question and I also am working on new mock reflecting going to different O & D without O.D. (sorry just could not stop my fingers from typing that).

Antonio plays at a high level and would be tough to replace. I think he'll take a home team discount to stay in Houston... he's kind of an odd duck/square peg guy who likes it here in the clubhouse & in town. Hope it works we keep him.

Yeah and Jay Foreman had more tackles than Sharper one year. Nobody would mistake who was harder to replace.

Stats don't tell the whole story sometimes. IMO, Antonio Smith is the heart and soul of our D-line. He does lots of stuff that doesn't show up in the stats sheet, and I think he's one of the main reasons JJ is as good as he is. I'd hate to lose him but he's close to the end of his career and wouldn't blame him for chasing the money elsewhere if it's offered. I think there's a good chance that Antonio stays though, since the new CBA teams aren't lining up to pay older vets big money. I like Crick as a rotational DE, provides very good depth, but I don't see him as an every down DE that can pressure the QB consistently. The Texans may choose to give him a year as a starter to get a true evaluation of him and because we have so many other holes to fill, just not enough draft picks to fill them all. My mock will reflect Smith leaving and an early pick spent on a replacement.

The needs of this team will become more apparent when a coaching staff is chosen and we know something about the style of play we wish to pursue. I like that BOB will adjust to the players we have rather than insisting on his system, but new players would be fits in his system as well as stop gaps in the transition.

There are three basic things a defensive lineman does 1) stop the run with tackle either solo or combined 2) clog the run avenues which may not result in a tackle but causes RB to go elsewhere and 3) impact the QB (sacks, hurries or interrupt flight of ball).

Smith is limited in #1 as less than 3 combined tackles per game. He does #2 but does he do it better than a draft pick or cheap younger FA? That is debatable. 3. He does impact QB with sack but once per 3 games and maybe a bit on hurries, but with Watt should not Ninja be well more ninja?

Of course it is not just about stats but they do keep them and we should use them as a tool as will Texans if and when they evaluate Smith and if they offer him a contract.

Ninja is all hype. He and mitchell were getting dogged this year. I would play Crick, but I would also bring in a pick and a vet for depth.
