We Were All Wrong About Dwight Jones!

We were never given even a hint by the Texans organization of why Jones so suddenly left the organization.............leaving his departure a subject for his ridicule. Despite some of his past lofty comments, I for one feel that there was a better way for the Texans to have communicated with its fans concerning the circumstances........without having to give specific facts..........leaving Jones with a semblance of keeping face. My thoughts and prayers go out to Jones for a successful NFL career.

The Jets signed Dwight Jones to their practice squad Wednesday, a wide receiver who is returning to football after a family tragedy. Jones went undrafted in 2012 after coming out of North Carolina and signed with the Houston Texans.

But Jones didn’t report to training camp that season, telling the Texans he wasn’t sure if we wanted to play football again and was placed on the reserve/did not report list.

“The reason why I left Houston (was) because my son (Deizean) was sick, and he passed away. A lot of people don’t know the situation with my son and things like that. He was born real sick, a lot of medical conditions,” Jones said. “I tried to play football, but it just didn’t feel right. It was the worst feeling of my life. The feeling was God was just wanting me to spend the last moments with my son.”

His son, at just 22 months old, died July 6.

Jones who had 85 catches for 1,196 yards and 12 TDs during his senior season in 2011 - waffled back and forth about whether he should return to football.

“I was thinking about it,” he said. “I really wasn’t quite sure. I was always second-guessing.”

I was wrong.

I wish he would have brought the Texans family into it... some good could have come from that. We sure would have supported him & his family.

R.I.P. to his baby boy. I hope Dwight comes in and marks his mark on this league.

It makes so much more sense now, though. Jones was a talker. I didn't get why he wouldn't come in and fight.
 
Jones impressed the brass enough to win a spot on the practice squad, the first step in his second NFL journey. In 2012, he signed with the Houston Texans as an undrafted free agent, but he walked away to care for his dying son, Deizean, who was born with lung, heart and brain disorders.

People thought he quit because he didn't like football. That, he said, wasn't the case at all.

"I wasn't mentally prepared to play football," Jones said Wednesday after his first practice.

Deizean died last June, three months before his second birthday. Jones remained out of football, but football kept calling him back. At first he was reluctant, but there was considerable interest, so he figured it was his destiny to play professionall football. He went to the CFL to play for the Montreal Alouettes, but that didn't work out.

Jones enjoyed a productive college career at North Carolina, catching 85 passes for 1,196 yards and 12 touchdowns as a senior. At 6-foot-3, 230 pounds, he's built almost like a tight end. After signing with the Texans, he proclaimed himself "the next Andre Johnson." Then came an 18-month hiatus from the game.

He said his sister recently had a dream about New York, so Jones figures he's meant to be a Jet.

"My son died and I feel like a part of me is gone, but it makes me stronger," he said. "It makes me want to do it for him."

I (obviously) was too, and I was really excited when he got signed here. I didn't know about this though and was super disappointed when he seemed to "give up".

I wish him the best of luck and hope he makes it onto a team off the PS.
 
I mocked him as a high selection and remember a poster stating he had a source at a hospital that identified a personal family loss for Jones at the time we were blasting him for walking off. Hope he is now able to have type of career I project for him. Also, right or wrong this leaves bad taste in mouth for way Texans handle it.

Idk...had he mentioned this MAYE we put him in the non injury list and let him work his issues out w our support. I'm a huge non-talker about personal problems but I think in this case you should tell someone. I bet he would have been surprised by the support he would have received.

I hope you're not implying that the Texans knew nothing of what was going on.

Why? The Texans front office had hoped that Jones would return to football, but how long were they suppose to wait for an undrafted rookie?

Then, a month later, Jones abruptly told the Texans he doesn’t want to be a professional football player.

So it’s no surprise that Jones didn’t report to training camp today. But the Texans, who put Jones on the reserve/did not report list, are still holding out hope that Jones will show up eventually, according to Adam Caplan of SiriusXM Radio.

He is on the Jets practice squad. I would grab him and add him to the main roster. That way Htown can have him over the offseason and see if he can return to college levels. If he can, he would be a dynamic addition to the offense.

Eh, I don't think anyone should feel bad about what was said back then. He doesn't have to publicly say exactly what is going on, but his agent should have issued a statement saying "he's dealing with a family issue and will be unavailable to the team for a while." Nobody would fault him for that. Simply not showing up is unprofessional, no matter what the issue. He could have made it much easier on himself by doing so, and not jeopardized his career.

Sorry to hear about his son, but I can't say I'm rooting for him if he's going to play for the Jets.
 
Report: Former NFL Receiver Dwight Jones Charged With Animal Cruelty

Police charged former NFL receiver Dwight Jones with felony killing an animal by starvation Monday after they found one dead dog and another starved dog in his yard, per the Times-News.

An anonymous tip on Feb. 19 alerted police of “animal cruelty” at Jones’ place, and though other people lived at the North Carolina residence, they determined he owned the two pit-bull mixes. It was reportedly 14 degrees outside the night officers found the dogs.

Animal control took the live dog from the home.

The Texans signed Jones in 2012 after he went undrafted, though he abruptly left the team to take care of his son. He also played on the New York Jets’ practice squad and the Arena Football League’s Arizona Rattlers.

I hope that when he left the Texans to take care of his ill son, he didn't fail at that also.
