NFL will look at making QBs safer

NFL will look at making QBs safer

Thanks to a broken collarbone on a run-of-the-mill sack, the Green Bay Packers are without Aaron Rodgers. Their rivals in the NFC North, the Chicago Bears, are without Jay Cutler thanks to a bum leg, which also wasn't the result of some sort of illegal hit.

Game after game, NFL quarterbacks get sacked, get hurt -- and miss starts. Of the 15 games on this week's schedule, nine -- 60 percent -- feature at least one team that has been forced to change its quarterback because of injury this season.

The NFL's competition committee will take a look this offseason at whether to expand rules that protect the quarterback.

...Sam Bradford...is one of nine quarterbacks on injured reserve in 2013, the second most through 10 weeks in any of the past 15 seasons, according to STATS.

Amid those regular reminders of the dangers facing players at the sport's marquee position, the league's competition committee will take a look this offseason at whether to expand rules that protect the QB, NFL vice president of officiating Dean Blandino said Thursday.

"Should he always get protection from low hits or head hits, regardless of the posture he's presenting?" Blandino said in a telephone interview. "Part of the conversation will be: Should that protection be expanded to all times when the quarterback has the ball in the pocket?"

Games without good QBs are hardly worth watching. Fine to consider additional options to protect them.

Hmmm. Last week Peyton Manning gets hit and b*tched and moaned about it like a QB, or should I say HE, should be untouchable..........

...........days later the NFL, having heard poor Sweet Polly's cries of distress, is off to the rescue.

*************

An NFL game is hardly worth watching unless there is a good QB? Disagree.

Screw that.. they're protected enough. Injuries are a part of football and since this is the most "injured QB" season in 15 years with all the added protection that they've already been given since then that tells me it's just a anomaly.

And how do you propose that they add additional options to protect them? You already can't hit them high or hit them low.. so now you can't hit them at all? Or can hit them high or low regardless of what posture they're in? If you do that all a QB has to do is jump up and get his legs up in the air or bring his head down.. Then it's welcome to the NBA (Which used to be my favorite sport way back when).. The National Flopball League.

You can add all the rules you want, it's not going to stop people from getting hurt. The only thing that's going to stop that is if you put flags on everybody and as soon as that happens, I'll stop watching. Hell if they keep jacking with the rules at the rate they are I might stop watching.

Stuff evolves over time. Perhaps the reason very mobile QBs are in vogue now is a reaction to QB injuries. Perhaps the days of the immobile pocket QB are over. Let the game evolve naturally, because it can on it's own.

Its not evolving naturally , it evolves every time a big name gets hurt.

Brady , Cushing , Peyton .... all had rules changed in recent years cause they got hurt.

Injuries are a part of the game ... even in basketball , whats suppose to be a non contact sport .... injuries happen.

They have changed the game so much and to the advantage of the offense , it really puts teams without those big name QB's in a bind. Teams use to be able to compensate for a poor passing game with good defense and running the ball well.

Now .... you don't have that option.

This hit just changed the outcome of a game...

Was a hit & recovered fumble, but called an illegal "high" hit on the (short)QB.

What other options? Can't hit them low. Can't hit them high. Can't even have your hand barely brush their helmet without a flag and we just saw a crap call against the 49ers. There are no other options.

And plus what games are hardly worth watching? I just watched some McGlowing or whatever beat my Texans. I watched McCown as the backup lead my Bears to victory. Everyone was watching Keenum. In other words, backups hardly made games not worth watching. If teams have issues then it sounds like they need to actually develop their backup quarterback then.

It was the correct call under the existing rules. Fans just keep screwing up the rule as head to head. Blows to the head or neck area by helmet, shoulder or arm are prohibited.

The two potential rule changes they are thinking about are extensions of the low hit rule. One extension would apply it outside the pocket (right now it is only in the pocket) and another would apply it during rushing exchanges (right now it does not apply until the QB assumes a passing posture). I don't see either of those as changing the sport.

NFL is getting lamer by the year...National FLAGFOOTBALL League it is becoming. What's the next rule, defenders will have to count to 5 Mississippi before rushing?

Didn't look like contact to the head or neck to me , his arm went across the chest ... you see the head stay for a fraction of a second then decide its time to follow the rest of his body. Poor call IMO.

Didn't watch that game , was it reviewed or called in that instant ?? That would be a tough call to make in real time. I could see them erring on the side of protecting the QB if it was a real time / not reviewed.

Wish they'd protect defensive players too. I could stand to not see our season ruined for a third straight year via a low hit to Brian Cushing's knee.

I don't see it as even close. The fact that initial contact is across Brees' chest with the lower part of his arm is irrelevant because the arm is after all connected and the upper arm is at his neck and his shoulder pad drives into his head.

Slowmo version.

It was called on the field. It has been reviewed by the league already and confirmed.

The arm is .... right across the shoulder pads.

Does the head contact the shoulder pad .... yeah but as a consequence of the whiplash effect. I'd call it incidental .... but that's with the benefit of slomo. Letter of the rule .... sure , I'd agree with that if it was the call on the field , could also see it going the other way.

I'd expect the league to confirm it .... it would have been a difficult call in real time.

They've made it difficult for defenses .... cant hit the QB high , cant hit him low , cant touch the receiver after 5 yards , cant hit him as he's making the grab unless you are playing the ball , cant blast him after he's made the catch until he becomes a runner (which is discretionary at best).
Its getting to the point where even a great defense cant compensate for the difference in talent at the QB / WR positions.

We have heard this dire prediction for years. In the late '90's, the rage was all about "prototype QBs" like Vick, Culpepper, McNabb, etc.

Then two pocket passers ruled the league for the next decade. And now we see Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers getting read to take their place after Manning and Brady retire.

The simple logic is that it is easier to throw a ball 40 yards than it is to run it through a gauntlet. When young mobile QBs get older, they obviously get less mobile due to age and injuries. At that point, they had better be able to read a defense and pass a ball or the league has no use for them.

Mobile QBs become vogue every decade or so. Now we see the trend because so many defenders have horrible fundamentals. But then a guy like RGIII loses his ability to run and must pass the ball and we see some clear limitations in his game.

God I hope not. This league has already taken a turn for the worse; this would be more continuation in that direction.

Every time a team I'm rooting for takes a sack, I immediately start looking for a flag before I can celebrate; every time a team I'm rooting for makes a big stop on 3rd down, I immediately start looking for a flag before I can celebrate.

It sucks. So badly. This is not the football I grew up with.

On the contrary..it's extending the life of these immobile pocket qbs. They may as well say the defense can't hit them anymore...its ridiculous.

If anyone caught the A Football Life last week on the forward pass, you quickly come to realize that the NFL has been evolving for the past 100 years.

Current changes are merely a continuation of the process.

The NFL has never been more popular. So they are not going to go back in time, but rather they will continue to implement changes that cater to the growing popularity (regardless if we like it or not). And what is popular is the passing game and the star QBs, so the league is just doing what it has always done.

The NFL is not the NBA .... where stars are all that matter.

No...not yet.

They are going to do what they want to do regardless of what you and I think about it. Plenty of fans to take our place if we stop watching the product.

Money talks. Our bitching about it doesn't pay any bills.

Oh my God, that's IT! That's how we solve our QB issues--we find someone who has ESPN hanging on his schlong all the live-long day and make him our starter. The refs will go out of their way to make sure he succeeds!

Well, duh!

I say we literally put in his contract that he must have ESPN tattooed on his schlong. Don't worry, it'll get on the internet somehow.

Bring back Brett Favre! You might only be able to fit "ESP" though. People will think he's psychic.

Or get Vince Young. He could get a tattoo that reads "The family of ESPN networks owned by Disney, including ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3 and other online platforms, ESPNNews, ESPN Deportes, and any and all future networks."
