49ers release Nnamdi Asomugha, activate Eric Wright, Mario Manningham

San Francisco is planning to activate Eric Wright this week and to make room on the active roster, the 49ers will release Nnamdi Asomugha, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

When San Francisco signed Asomugha, it was viewed as a low risk move with the potential for a high reward. Asomugha, however, failed to regain the form he displayed earlier in his career and was near the bottom of San Francisco's depth chart. He started the year as the 49ers' nickel cornerback before suffering a knee injury. Tramaine Brock stepped into the role and excelled, taking over the job even when Asomugha returned. Asomugha played in just three games this season and was inactive -- despite being healthy -- the last three weeks.

Tramaine Brock is the dude who pick sixed dumbass then picked him again. 9ers sure know how to find defensive talent, we have to spend first rounders to get any on defense.

One of the best when he could use the sideline.

Don't be surprised to hear of his successes post football. Smart, classy guy... charitable/mentors kids, actor, writer, and on and on.

how did he fall so far? i know the eagles wildly misused him, but i figured he'd start climbing again with the 49'ers. i'm tempted to say give him a look because his skillset is very fitting for the texans - a big physical man to man corner. i'd still have kareem and jjo starting, but in nickel sets give nnamdi the sideline and move kareem to the slot. well, i WANT to say that, but he must be just about done if he cant even hold onto a roster spot anymore.

The man is sharp. I wouldn't be surprised if he goes on to bigger better things. I wonder if he'd want to give playing safety a try?

I don't believe for a moment that he's a worse option than Brice McCain.

I'm not going to say we should try and pick him up but I am going to say that I wouldn't have a problem with it.

Cut McCain n give him a shot
I dunno, why fool around with some over the hill vet released by another team when the Texans should be giving all of their younger corners a chance to compete and acquire playing experience ?

how did he fall so far?

He's 32. Aaron Glenn went from a Pro Bowler in 2002 to being a 5th stringer on the Cowgirls after being cut by the Texans in 2005. Once the wheels come off a man cover corner, there's not much left they can do.

Asomugha was never a burner to begin with. He simply couldn't afford to lose a step and still be effective.

I remember how bad this board wanted him in/after 2010. We really dodged a bullet there.

Why not pick him up and stick him back at safety?

He is big enough and could cover ground, even at 32...

Just a thought outside the box...
