It took me a second to see what you did there.
Some of you might remember that I met Bum and Bud on the same day. I actually have a picture somewhere standing between both of them. It was pretty crazy because Bud firing Bum was a historical moment in sports history for me.
Later that afternoon John McClain handed me an autograph that Bud Adams addressed to me (there is a story behind all of that since my disdain for Bud is how I ended up there to start with).
Anyway, I will always be grateful to JM for making all of that happen (meeting Bum, not Bud's autograph).
Man, wish I had heard it.
Carl Mauck. Now there's a name that brings back great memories. I wore out that 45 of his "Oiler Cannonball" song that my folks had to buy another one. I still have it somewhere at my mom's house. Give it a listen.
I really hope that NFL Films does an episode of "A Football Life" for Earl, Bum, and/or Luv Ya Blue. While they did not win a championship, they certainly won our hearts.
Hearing the thoughts of Oilers fans from that era the past couple of weeks really brings on the nostalgia. It was an era when things were just different, both from a kid's perspective but also how cultural connections used to spring up from regional events, before the internet and urban sprawl and chain stores homogenized everything.
Houston had a vibe in the '70's, memories that coalesce together from childhood. NASA. The Astrodome. Bum and his cowboy hat (he was always our own Will Rogers with his wit and wisdom). Earl. Luv Ya Blue. Urban Cowboy. The Astros rainbow jerseys. Astroworld. Paul Boesch and wrestling shows on Sunday morning.
Hervoyel is my Oilers buddy. We can (and have) sat for hours reminiscing about the old days. His Oilers museum is going to be epic. He said something once that really made me think. No matter what the Texans do, we will never have that connection to them from our childhood, one where we received the loyalty from our dads and passed it to our kids. My sons might have it for the Texans, but for us old(er) Houston football fans, we have our old memories and our new memories. Always separate with two completely different franchises.

I agree 100% with this. There is something to be said about rooting for a certain uniform and growing up wearing those colors from childhood. For me personally I don't have the same connection with the Texans. I think Herv has or would say the same.
The power of nostalgia. This year's Madden has a franchise owners mode that you can relocate your team. One of the options is to move to Houston and become the Oilers. I made a new owner - Earl Campbell - and brought the Titans back to Houston just for kicks. And this is where nostalgia comes in, because playing as the Oilers and seeing those classic uniforms really brings back the memories.
I guess I just turned my mind off after the team left Houston, but I have to admit, the logo and colors are just classic. Even if they still left, Bud should have kept the name, IMO. He killed the Oilers. Even though the Titans have official "franchise records", they will never be the Oilers. And it's a damn shame.
Oh yeah, add Evel Knievel and the '76 bicentennial to my list of coalesced memories from the '70's. I always like that Evel sort of had "Oilers colors" as a kid, both very American with red, white, and blue.
